| 1 - Dopo queste cose i figli di Moab e i figli di Ammon e con essi degli Ammoniti si raccolsero per muover guerra a Josafat. | 1 After this the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Me-unites, came against Jehoshaphat for battle. |
| 2 Vennero dei messaggeri ad informare Josafat, dicendo: «Una gran moltitudine di gente s'avanza contro di te dal di là del mare e dalla Siria, e si è accampata in Asasontamar, cioè in Engaddi». | 2 Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, "A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar" (that is, En-gedi). |
| 3 Josafat ne restò atterrito e si rivolse tutto a pregare il Signore e ordinò in tutto Giuda un digiuno. | 3 Then Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. |
| 4 Adunatosi Giuda a pregare il Signore, e venuti tutti dalle città a supplicarlo, | 4 And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. |
| 5 Josafat si pose in mezzo all'assemblea di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, nella casa del Signore, dinanzi al nuovo atrio, | 5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, |
| 6 e disse: «Signore, Dio dei padri nostri, tu sei Dio nel cielo e sei il padrone di tutti i regni delle genti; in mano tua è la fortezza e la potenza, nè alcuno può resistere contro di te. | 6 and said, "O LORD, God of our fathers, art thou not God in heaven? Dost thou not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? In thy hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee. |
| 7 Non sei tu, o Signore Dio nostro, che sterminasti dinanzi al popolo tuo Israele tutti gli abitatori di questa terra, e non l'hai tu data per sempre alla discendenza di Abramo tuo amico? | 7 Didst thou not, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and give it for ever to the descendants of Abraham thy friend? |
| 8 Essi l'hanno abitata e hanno costruito in essa un santuario al tuo nome, dicendo: | 8 And they have dwelt in it, and have built thee in it a sanctuary for thy name, saying, |
| 9 - Se ci incoglieranno sventure, spada vendicatrice, pestilenza o carestia, noi staremo nel cospetto tuo dinanzi a questa casa nella quale è invocato il tuo nome, e alzeremo la voce a te in mezzo alle nostre tribolazioni, e tu ci esaudirai e ci salverai. - | 9 'If evil comes upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before thee, for thy name is in this house, and cry to thee in our affliction, and thou wilt hear and save.' |
| 10 Ora adunque ecco i figli di Ammon, di Moab, e del monte di Seir, in mezzo ai quali non hai concesso ad Israele di passare quando uscivano dall'Egitto, ed essi furon lasciati in disparte e non vennero sterminati; | 10 And now behold, the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, and whom they avoided and did not destroy-- |
| 11 ora invece essi fanno il contrario e si sforzano di cacciare noi dal possesso, che tu ci hai dato. | 11 behold, they reward us by coming to drive us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. |
| 12 O Dio nostro, non farai tu giustizia di costoro? Quanto a noi non abbiamo forza sufficiente per resistere a tal moltitudine che irrompe sopra di noi. Ma siccome non sappiamo quel che dobbiamo fare, non ci resta altro che di poter dirigere i nostri occhi a te». | 12 O our God, wilt thou not execute judgment upon them? For we are powerless against this great multitude that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon thee." |
| 13 Tutto Giuda compresi i bambini e le donne e i loro fanciulli se ne stavano dinanzi al Signore. | 13 Meanwhile all the men of Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. |
| 14 Eravi colà Jaaziel, figlio di Zaccaria, figlio di Banaia, figlio di Jeiel, figlio di Matania, un levita dei figli di Asaf, sovra del quale venne lo spirito del Signore in mezzo alla folla, | 14 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Je-iel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. |
| 15 e disse: «State attenti, voi tutti di Giuda, voi abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu re Josafat: Questo vi dice il Signore: - Non abbiate paura, non temete tanta moltitudine, poichè questa non è battaglia vostra, ma di Dio. | 15 And he said, "Hearken, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the LORD to you, 'Fear not, and be not dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but Gods. |
| 16 Domani moverete contro di essi, poichè stanno per salire sul colle che ha nome Sis e li troverete all'estremità del torrente, che è contro il deserto di Jeruel. | 16 Tomorrow go down against them; behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz; you will find them at the end of the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. |
| 17 Non sarete voi a combattere, ma soltanto statevene ad attendere con fiducia e vedrete il soccorso del Signore sopra di voi, o Giuda e Gerusalemme. Non abbiate paura e non temete, domani voi moverete contro di loro e il Signore sarà con voi -». | 17 You will not need to fight in this battle; take your position, stand still, and see the victory of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.' Fear not, and be not dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, and the LORD will be with you." |
| 18 Allora Josafat, Giuda e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme caddero a terra dinanzi al Signore e lo adorarono. | 18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the LORD, worshiping the LORD. |
| 19 Frattanto i leviti della stirpe di Caat e della stirpe di Core, lodavano il Signore Dio d'Israele a voce altissima. | 19 And the Levites, of the Kohathites and the Korahites, stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice. |
| 20 Quando al mattino si levarono, presero la via del deserto di Tecua e mentre si allontanavano, Josafat stette in mezzo a loro e disse: «Ascoltatemi, uomini di Giuda, e voi tutti abitanti di Gerusalemme. Abbiate fiducia nel Signore Dio vostro e sarete sicuri; confidate nei profeti suoi e tutto riuscirà bene». | 20 And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed." |
| 21 Diede inoltre al popolo alcuni consigli e costituì dei cantori del Signore, perchè lo lodassero in mezzo alla schiera e precedessero l'esercito e ad una voce gridassero: «Lodate il Signore, poichè eterna è la sua misericordia.» | 21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the LORD and praise him in holy array, as they went before the army, and say, "Give thanks to the LORD, for his steadfast love endures for ever." |
| 22 Com'ebbero cominciato a cantare le lodi, il Signore rivolse contro di loro medesimi le imboscate dei figli di Ammon, di Moab e della montagna di Seir, che erano venuti per combattere contro Giuda; essi furono sconfitti, | 22 And when they began to sing and praise, the LORD set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. |
| 23 perchè i figli di Ammon e di Moab insorsero contro gli abitanti del monte Seir, per ucciderli e sterminarli; e dopo aver fatto ciò, eran venuti in rotta tra di loro e si ferirono gli uni gli altri, | 23 For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, destroying them utterly, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another. |
| 24 cosicchè quando Giuda pervenne alla vetta, che guarda verso il deserto, vide da lungi la spaziosa regione piena di cadaveri, senza che alcuno avesse potuto sfuggire alla morte. | 24 When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies lying on the ground; none had escaped. |
| 25 Venne perciò Josafat e tutto il popolo che era con lui a spogliare i morti, e trovarono fra i cadaveri molti oggetti, vesti e vasi preziosissimi, e fecero tanto bottino che non potevano portarlo tutto, e per tre giorni non riuscirono a portare via il bottino tanto era copioso. | 25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoil from them, they found cattle in great numbers, goods, clothing, and precious things, which they took for themselves until they could carry no more. They were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much. |
| 26 Nel quarto giorno poi si riunirono nella Valle della Benedizione; ivi benedirono il Signore, e perciò chiamarono quel luogo fino ai nostri giorni "Valle della Benedizione". | 26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, for there they blessed the LORD; therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Beracah to this day. |
| 27 Tornarono così tutti gli uomini di Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, con gran gioia, per averli il Signore consolati col trionfo sui loro nemici. | 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, returning to Jerusalem with joy, for the LORD had made them rejoice over their enemies. |
| 28 Entrarono essi in Gerusalemme nella casa del Signore con salteri e cetre e trombe; | 28 They came to Jerusalem, with harps and lyres and trumpets, to the house of the LORD. |
| 29 e il timor del Signore invase tutti i regni della terra, quando udirono che il Signore aveva combattuto contro i nemici di Israele. | 29 And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. |
| 30 Così il regno di Josafat fu in pace e il Signore gli diede quiete da tutte le parti. | 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest round about. |
| 31 Josafat adunque regnò sopra Giuda. Aveva trentacinque anni quando cominciò a regnare e ne regnò venticinque in Gerusalemme. Il nome della madre di lui fu Azuba, figlia di Selai. | 31 Thus Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. |
| 32 Egli camminò nella via del padre suo Asa, nè mai si allontanò da essa, facendo quanto era accetto al Signore. | 32 He walked in the way of Asa his father and did not turn aside from it; he did what was right in the sight of the LORD. |
| 33 Non tolse però i luoghi eccelsi e ancora il popolo non aveva rivolto il suo cuore al Signore de' padri suoi. | 33 The high places, however, were not taken away; the people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their fathers. |
| 34 Il resto delle azioni di Josafat, tanto le prime che le ultime, sono state scritte nelle memorie di Jeu, figlio di Anani, che le espose nei libri dei re d'Israele. | 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, are written in the chronicles of Jehu the son of Hanani, which are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel. |

E le navi si infransero e non poterono andare in Tarsis. | 37 Then Eliezer the son of Do-davahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have joined with Ahaziah, the LORD will destroy what you have made." And the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish. |
