E tu oggi hai cercato in me di che rimproverarmi per una donna? | 8 Then Abner was very angry over the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, "Am I a dog's head of Judah? This day I keep showing loyalty to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not given you into the hand of David; and yet you charge me today with a fault concerning a woman. |

| 11 E Isboset non potè replicargli una sola parola, perchè aveva paura di lui. | 11 And Ish-bosheth could not answer Abner another word, because he feared him. |
| 12 Abner inviò adunque messaggeri a Davide perchè da parte sua gli dicessero: «Di chi è la terra?», e aggiungessero: «Fa' alleanza con me e la mia mano sarà teco e ridurrò sotto di te tutto Israele». | 12 And Abner sent messengers to David at Hebron, saying, "To whom does the land belong? Make your covenant with me, and behold, my hand shall be with you to bring over all Israel to you." |
| 13 Davide rispose: «Benissimo; io farò teco alleanza, ma ti chiedo una sola cosa e dico che tu non vedrai la mia faccia prima che io mi sia ricondotta Micol figlia di Saul: solo allora verrai e mi vedrai». | 13 And he said, "Good; I will make a covenant with you; but one thing I require of you; that is, you shall not see my face, unless you first bring Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to see my face." |
| 14 Mandò poi Davide messaggeri ad Isboset figlio di Saul per dirgli: «Rendimi mia moglie Micol, che io ho sposato a prezzo di cento prepuzii di Filistei». | 14 Then David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul's son, saying, "Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed at the price of a hundred foreskins of the Philistines." |
| 15 Isboset allora mandò a prenderla al marito di lei, Faltiel figlio di Lais. | 15 And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband Palti-el the son of Laish. |
| 16 E il marito la seguì piangendo fino a Baurim; colà Abner gli disse: «Vattene indietro», ed egli se ne tornò. | 16 But her husband went with her, weeping after her all the way to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, "Go, return"; and he returned. |
| 17 Abner era intanto entrato in trattative cogli anziani d'Israele, dicendo: «Già da lungo tempo voi cercavate Davide perchè regnasse sopra di voi; | 17 And Abner conferred with the elders of Israel, saying, "For some time past you have been seeking David as king over you. |
| 18 decidetevi adunque, perchè il Signore ha parlato a Davide in questo modo: - Io libererò il popolo d'Israele dalla mano dei Filistei e da quella di tutti i suoi nemici per mezzo del mio servo Davide -». | 18 Now then bring it about; for the LORD has promised David, saying, 'By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines, and from the hand of all their enemies.'" |
| 19 Parlò ancora Abner con quei di Beniamino. Poi andò a riferire a Davide in Ebron tutto ciò che avevano deciso Israele e tutta la casa di Beniamino. | 19 Abner also spoke to Benjamin; and then Abner went to tell David at Hebron all that Israel and the whole house of Benjamin thought good to do. |
| 20 Egli era venuto a Davide in Ebron accompagnato da venti uomini e Davide fece un banchetto ad Abner e a quelli che lo accompagnavano. | 20 When Abner came with twenty men to David at Hebron, David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him. |
| 21 Poi Abner disse a Davide: «Io mi leverò e andrò a riunire tutto Israele sotto il mio signore e re, e farò teco un patto e tu regnerai sopra tutti, come è nei tuoi desiderii». Davide congedò Abner che se ne andò in pace. | 21 And Abner said to David, "I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may reign over all that your heart desires." So David sent Abner away; and he went in peace. |
| 22 Or ecco Joab e la gente di Davide, carichi di grande bottino, ritornarsene dall'aver debellato dei predoni. Abner non era più in Ebron con Davide, essendosi quegli congedato e partito in pace, | 22 Just then the servants of David arrived with Joab from a raid, bringing much spoil with them. But Abner was not with David at Hebron, for he had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. |
| 23 mentre Joab e tutto il suo esercito erano arrivati dopo. Fu pertanto portata la notizia a Joab da alcuni, che gli dissero: «Abner figliuolo di Ner è venuto dal re, il quale lo ha congedato ed egli se n'è andato in pace». | 23 When Joab and all the army that was with him came, it was told Joab, "Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he has let him go, and he has gone in peace." |
| 24 Joab allora si portò da re e gli disse: «Che cosa hai fatto? Ecco, Abner è venuto a te; perchè tu l'hai lasciato partire in modo che egli se ne è andato e allontanato? | 24 Then Joab went to the king and said, "What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you; why is it that you have sent him away, so that he is gone? |
| 25 Non sai tu che Abner figliuolo di Ner è venuto per ingannarti e spiare tutti i tuoi movimenti e per sapere tutto ciò che fai?». | 25 You know that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you are doing." |
| 26 Uscito quindi Joab dal cospetto di Davide, mandò dietro ad Abner alcuni messaggeri e, all'insaputa di Davide, lo fece ritornare dalla cisterna di Sira. | 26 When Joab came out from David's presence, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern of Sirah; but David did not know about it. |
| 27 Ritornato Abner in Ebron, Joab lo trasse in disparte in mezzo alla porta, fingendo di parlargli, e qui gli diede un colpo all'inguine e l'uccise per far vendetta del sangue di Asael suo fratello. | 27 And when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him privately, and there he smote him in the belly, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. |
| 28 Come Davide intese l'accaduto disse: «Innanzi al Signore io e il mio regno siamo in perpetuo innocenti del sangue di Abner figliuolo di Ner; | 28 Afterward, when David heard of it, he said, "I and my kingdom are for ever guiltless before the LORD for the blood of Abner the son of Ner. |
| 29 scenda [esso] sul capo di Joab e sopra tutta la casa del padre di lui, nè manchi mai nella casa di Joab chi soffra di gonorrea e di lebbra e tenga il fuso, e muoia di spada, e manchi di pane». | 29 May it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father's house; and may the house of Joab never be without one who has a discharge, or who is leprous, or who holds a spindle, or who is slain by the sword, or who lacks bread!" |
| 30 Joab e Abisai suo fratello uccisero adunque Abner perchè egli aveva ammazzato Asael loro fratello a Gabaon in combattimento. | 30 So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon. |
| 31 Davide poi disse a Joab e a tutto il popolo che stava con lui: «Stracciatevi le vesti, cingetevi di sacco e piangete pei funerali di Abner». Lo stesso re Davide accompagnò il feretro | 31 Then David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, "Rend your clothes, and gird on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner." And King David followed the bier. |
| 32 e mentre si seppelliva Abner in Ebron Davide levò la sua voce e pianse sul sepolcro di Abner: pianse anche tutto il popolo, | 32 They buried Abner at Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept. |
| 33 e il re lamentandosi e piangendo Abner, disse: «No, non come sogliono morire i vili, è morto Abner. | 33 And the king lamented for Abner, saying, "Should Abner die as a fool dies? |
| 34 Le tue mani non sono state legatenè i tuoi piedi stretti nei ceppi; ma tu sei caduto come si suol caderedinanzi ai figli d'iniquità.» E tutto il popolo gemendo pianse sopra di lui. | 34 Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered; as one falls before the wicked you have fallen." And all the people wept again over him. |
| 35 Come tutta la moltitudine venne per mangiare insieme con Davide, essendo ancora giorno chiaro, Davide giurò, dicendo: «Iddio mi faccia questo e mi aggiunga quello se prima del tramonto del sole, io gusterò pane o qualsiasi altra cosa». | 35 Then all the people came to persuade David to eat bread while it was yet day; but David swore, saying, "God do so to me and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!" |
| 36 Il popolo udì e si compiacque di tutto ciò che aveva fatto il re al cospetto di tutto il popolo; | 36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; as everything that the king did pleased all the people. |
| 37 e tutta la moltitudine e l'intero Israele conobbe in quel giorno che Abner figlio di Ner non era stato ucciso per istigazione del re. | 37 So all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king's will to slay Abner the son of Ner. |
| 38 Il re poi disse ai suoi servi: «Non sapete voi che un principe e uno dei migliori è caduto oggi in Israele? | 38 And the king said to his servants, "Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel? |
| 39 Io quantunque unto re sono ancora debole; ma questi uomini figliuoli di Sarvia, son duri contro di me. Che il Signore renda a chi fa il male conforme alla sua malizia». | 39 And I am this day weak, though anointed king; these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. The LORD requite the evildoer according to his wickedness!" |
