1 - A lungo durò la lotta tra la casa di Saul e quella di Davide, ma Davide progrediva e si faceva sempre più forte, mentre la casa di Saul andava di giorno in giorno, indebolendo.	1 So the war dragged on between the House of Saul and the House of David, but David grew steadilystronger and the House of Saul steadily weaker.
2 Nacquero a Davide in Ebron dei figliuoli. Il primogenito Amnon figlio di Achinoam di Jezrael;	2 The sons born to David at Hebron were: his first-born Amnon, by Ahinoam of Jezreel;
3 il secondo Cheleab figlio di Abigail già moglie di Nabal di Carmelo; il terzo Absalom figliuolo di Maaca figlia di Tolmai re di Gessur;	3 his second Chileab, by Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third Absalom son of Maacah, daughter ofTalmai king of Geshur;
4 il quarto Adonia figlio di Aggit; il quinto Safatia figlio di Abital;	4 the fourth Adonijah son of Haggith; the fifth Shephatiah son of Abital;
5 il sesto Jetraam figlio di Egla moglie di Davide: tutti costoro nacquero a Davide in Ebron.	5 the sixth Ithream, by David's wife, Eglah. These were born to David at Hebron.
6 Durante la guerra tra la casa di Saul e quella di Davide, Abner figlio di Ner aveva la reggenza della casa di Saul.	6 This is what took place during the war between the House of Saul and the House of David. Abner tookcomplete control in the House of Saul.
7 Saul aveva avuto una concubina chiamata Resfa figlia di Aia. E Isboset disse ad Abner:	7 Now, there was a concubine of Saul's called Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and Abner took her. Ishbaal saidto Abner, 'Why have you slept with my father's concubine?'
8 «Perchè sei tu entrato dalla concubina del padre mio?». Abner s'irritò grandemente alle parole di Isboset e rispose: «Sono io oggi una testa di cane, io che oggi sono avversario di Giuda, io che ho usato misericordia alla casa di Saul, tuo padre, e ai fratelli e ai prossimi tuoi e non ti ho dato in mano di Davide? E tu oggi hai cercato in me di che rimproverarmi per una donna?	8 At these words of Ishbaal, Abner flew into a rage. 'Am I a dog's head?' he shouted. 'Here am I, ful offaithful love towards the House of Saul your father, his brothers and his friends, not leaving you to the hands ofDavid, and now you find fault with me over a woman!
9 Che Dio faccia questo ad Abner e gli aggiunga quello, se io non agirò con Davide conformemente a quanto Dio gli giurò,	9 May God bring unnameable il s on Abner, and worse ones, too, if I do not bring about what Yahweh hassworn to David:
10 di trasferire cioè il regno dalla casa di Saul e di elevare il trono di Davide sopra Israele e sopra Giuda, da Dan fino a Bersabee».	10 to take the sovereignty from the House of Saul, and establish David's throne over Israel as well asJudah, from Dan to Beersheba!'
11 E Isboset non potè replicargli una sola parola, perchè aveva paura di lui.	11 Ishbaal dared not say a single word to Abner in reply, as he was afraid of him.
12 Abner inviò adunque messaggeri a Davide perchè da parte sua gli dicessero: «Di chi è la terra?», e aggiungessero: «Fa' alleanza con me e la mia mano sarà teco e ridurrò sotto di te tutto Israele».	12 Abner sent messengers on his own behalf to say to David, '. . . and furthermore, come to anagreement with me and I wil give you my support to win al Israel over to you.'
13 Davide rispose: «Benissimo; io farò teco alleanza, ma ti chiedo una sola cosa e dico che tu non vedrai la mia faccia prima che io mi sia ricondotta Micol figlia di Saul: solo allora verrai e mi vedrai».	13 'Very wel ,' David said, 'I wil come to an agreement with you. I impose one condition however; you wilnot be admitted to my presence unless you bring me Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to see me.'
14 Mandò poi Davide messaggeri ad Isboset figlio di Saul per dirgli: «Rendimi mia moglie Micol, che io ho sposato a prezzo di cento prepuzii di Filistei».	14 David then sent messengers to say to Ishbaal son of Saul, 'Give me back my wife Michal, whom Iacquired for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.'
15 Isboset allora mandò a prenderla al marito di lei, Faltiel figlio di Lais.	15 So Ishbaal sent for her to be taken from her husband Paltiel son of Laish.
16 E il marito la seguì piangendo fino a Baurim; colà Abner gli disse: «Vattene indietro», ed egli se ne tornò.	16 Her husband set off with her and fol owed her, weeping as he went, as far as Bahurim; but Abner saidto him, 'Go back!' and he went.
17 Abner era intanto entrato in trattative cogli anziani d'Israele, dicendo: «Già da lungo tempo voi cercavate Davide perchè regnasse sopra di voi;	17 Now Abner conferred with the elders of Israel. 'For a long time now,' he said, 'you have wanted Davidas your king.
18 decidetevi adunque, perchè il Signore ha parlato a Davide in questo modo: - Io libererò il popolo d'Israele dalla mano dei Filistei e da quella di tutti i suoi nemici per mezzo del mio servo Davide -».	18 Now you must take action, since Yahweh has said of David, "By the hand of my servant David I shaldeliver my people Israel from the clutches of the Philistines and al their enemies." '
19 Parlò ancora Abner con quei di Beniamino. Poi andò a riferire a Davide in Ebron tutto ciò che avevano deciso Israele e tutta la casa di Beniamino.	19 Abner also spoke to the men of Benjamin and then went to Hebron to tel David everything that hadbeen agreed by Israel and the House of Benjamin.
20 Egli era venuto a Davide in Ebron accompagnato da venti uomini e Davide fece un banchetto ad Abner e a quelli che lo accompagnavano.	20 Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David at Hebron, and David held a feast for Abner andthe men who were with him.
21 Poi Abner disse a Davide: «Io mi leverò e andrò a riunire tutto Israele sotto il mio signore e re, e farò teco un patto e tu regnerai sopra tutti, come è nei tuoi desiderii». Davide congedò Abner che se ne andò in pace.	21 Abner then said to David, 'I must get up and go. I am going to rally al Israel to my lord the king, so thatthey will make an alliance with you, and you wil reign over al that you desire.' So David al owed Abner to go,and he went unmolested.
22 Or ecco Joab e la gente di Davide, carichi di grande bottino, ritornarsene dall'aver debellato dei predoni. Abner non era più in Ebron con Davide, essendosi quegli congedato e partito in pace,	22 David's retainers were just then coming back with Joab from a raid, bringing a great quantity of bootywith them. Abner was no longer with David at Hebron, since David had allowed him to go, and he had goneunmolested.
23 mentre Joab e tutto il suo esercito erano arrivati dopo. Fu pertanto portata la notizia a Joab da alcuni, che gli dissero: «Abner figliuolo di Ner è venuto dal re, il quale lo ha congedato ed egli se n'è andato in pace».	23 When Joab and the whole company with him had arrived, Joab was told, 'Abner son of Ner has beento the king, and the king has al owed Abner to go away unmolested.'
24 Joab allora si portò da re e gli disse: «Che cosa hai fatto? Ecco, Abner è venuto a te; perchè tu l'hai lasciato partire in modo che egli se ne è andato e allontanato?	24 Joab then went to the king and said, 'What have you done? Abner comes to you and you let him goaway and now he has gone-why?
25 Non sai tu che Abner figliuolo di Ner è venuto per ingannarti e spiare tutti i tuoi movimenti e per sapere tutto ciò che fai?».	25 You know Abner son of Ner! He came to trick you, to discover your every move, to find out what youare doing.'
26 Uscito quindi Joab dal cospetto di Davide, mandò dietro ad Abner alcuni messaggeri e, all'insaputa di Davide, lo fece ritornare dalla cisterna di Sira.	26 Joab left David's presence and sent messengers after Abner and these, unknown to David, broughthim back from the storage-wel at Sirah.
27 Ritornato Abner in Ebron, Joab lo trasse in disparte in mezzo alla porta, fingendo di parlargli, e qui gli diede un colpo all'inguine e l'uccise per far vendetta del sangue di Asael suo fratello.	27 When Abner reached Hebron, Joab took him aside in the town-gate, as if to have a quiet word withhim, and there struck him a mortal blow in the bel y to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel.
28 Come Davide intese l'accaduto disse: «Innanzi al Signore io e il mio regno siamo in perpetuo innocenti del sangue di Abner figliuolo di Ner;	28 Afterwards, when David heard of this, he said, 'I and my kingdom are for ever innocent before Yahwehof the blood of Abner son of Ner;
29 scenda [esso] sul capo di Joab e sopra tutta la casa del padre di lui, nè manchi mai nella casa di Joab chi soffra di gonorrea e di lebbra e tenga il fuso, e muoia di spada, e manchi di pane».	29 may it fal on the head of Joab and on al his family! May the House of Joab never be free of menafflicted with haemorrhage or a virulent skin-disease, whose strength is in the distaff, who fall by the sword, wholack food.'
30 Joab e Abisai suo fratello uccisero adunque Abner perchè egli aveva ammazzato Asael loro fratello a Gabaon in combattimento.	30 (Joab and his brother Abishai had murdered Abner because he killed their brother Asahel at the battleof Gibeon.)
31 Davide poi disse a Joab e a tutto il popolo che stava con lui: «Stracciatevi le vesti, cingetevi di sacco e piangete pei funerali di Abner». Lo stesso re Davide accompagnò il feretro	31 David then said to Joab and the whole company with him, 'Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, andmourn over Abner,' and King David walked behind the bier.
32 e mentre si seppelliva Abner in Ebron Davide levò la sua voce e pianse sul sepolcro di Abner: pianse anche tutto il popolo,	32 They buried Abner at Hebron, and the king wept aloud on his grave, and the people al wept too.
33 e il re lamentandosi e piangendo Abner, disse: «No, non come sogliono morire i vili, è morto Abner.	33 The king made this lament over Abner: Should Abner have died as a brute dies?
34 Le tue mani non sono state legatenè i tuoi piedi stretti nei ceppi; ma tu sei caduto come si suol caderedinanzi ai figli d'iniquità.» E tutto il popolo gemendo pianse sopra di lui.	34 Your hands were not tied, your feet not chained; you fel as a man falls at the hands of criminals. Andal the people wept for him louder than ever.
35 Come tutta la moltitudine venne per mangiare insieme con Davide, essendo ancora giorno chiaro, Davide giurò, dicendo: «Iddio mi faccia questo e mi aggiunga quello se prima del tramonto del sole, io gusterò pane o qualsiasi altra cosa».	35 The people then al tried to persuade David to have some food while it was still daylight, but Davidswore this oath, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse il s, too, if I taste bread or anything whateveruntil the sun is down!'
36 Il popolo udì e si compiacque di tutto ciò che aveva fatto il re al cospetto di tutto il popolo;	36 Al the people took note of this and it pleased them; indeed, everything the king did pleased thepeople.
37 e tutta la moltitudine e l'intero Israele conobbe in quel giorno che Abner figlio di Ner non era stato ucciso per istigazione del re.	37 That day, al the people and al Israel understood that the king had had no part in the murder of Abnerson of Ner.
38 Il re poi disse ai suoi servi: «Non sapete voi che un principe e uno dei migliori è caduto oggi in Israele?	38 The king said to his retainers, 'Do you not realise that a prince, a great man, has fal en in Israel today?
39 Io quantunque unto re sono ancora debole; ma questi uomini figliuoli di Sarvia, son duri contro di me. Che il Signore renda a chi fa il male conforme alla sua malizia».	39 I, though anointed king, am weak at present, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too strong forme. May Yahweh repay the criminal as his crime deserves!'
