Primo libro di Samuele 8

1 Quando Samuele fu vecchio, stabilì giudici d’Israele i suoi figli.	1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges of Israel.
2 Il primogenito si chiamava Gioele, il secondogenito Abia; erano giudici a Bersabea.	2 His eldest son was cal ed Joel and his second one, Abijah; they were judges at Beersheba.
3 I figli di lui però non camminavano sulle sue orme, perché deviavano dietro il guadagno, accettavano regali e stravolgevano il diritto.	3 His sons did not fol ow his example but, seduced by the love of money, took bribes and gave biasedverdicts.
4 Si radunarono allora tutti gli anziani d’Israele e vennero da Samuele a Rama.	4 The elders of Israel all assembled, went back to Samuel at Ramah, and said,
5 Gli dissero: «Tu ormai sei vecchio e i tuoi figli non camminano sulle tue orme. Stabilisci quindi per noi un re che sia nostro giudice, come avviene per tutti i popoli».	5 'Look, you are old, and your sons are not fol owing your example. So give us a king to judge us, like theother nations.'
6 Agli occhi di Samuele la proposta dispiacque, perché avevano detto: «Dacci un re che sia nostro giudice». Perciò Samuele pregò il Signore.	6 Samuel thought that it was wrong of them to say, 'Let us have a king to judge us,' so he prayed toYahweh.
7 Il Signore disse a Samuele: «Ascolta la voce del popolo, qualunque cosa ti dicano, perché non hanno rigettato te, ma hanno rigettato me, perché io non regni più su di loro.	7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Obey the voice of the people in al that they say to you: it is not you theyhave rejected
8 Come hanno fatto dal giorno in cui li ho fatti salire dall’Egitto fino ad oggi, abbandonando me per seguire altri dèi, così stanno facendo anche a te.	8 but me, not wishing me to reign over them any more. They are now doing to you exactly what they havedone to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, deserting me and serving other gods.
9 Ascolta pure la loro richiesta, però ammoniscili chiaramente e annuncia loro il diritto del re che regnerà su di loro».	9 So, do what they ask; only, you must give them a solemn warning, and must tell them what the kingwho is to reign over them will do.'
10 Samuele riferì tutte le parole del Signore al popolo che gli aveva chiesto un re.	10 Everything that Yahweh had said, Samuel then repeated to the people who were asking him for aking.
11 Disse: «Questo sarà il diritto del re che regnerà su di voi: prenderà i vostri figli per destinarli ai suoi carri e ai suoi cavalli, li farà correre davanti al suo cocchio,	11 He said, 'This is what the king who is to reign over you wil do. He wil take your sons and direct themto his chariotry and cavalry, and they wil run in front of his chariot.
12 li farà capi di migliaia e capi di cinquantine, li costringerà ad arare i suoi campi, mietere le sue messi e apprestargli armi per le sue battaglie e attrezzature per i suoi carri.	12 He wil use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he wil make them plough his fields andgather in his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.
13 Prenderà anche le vostre figlie per farle sue profumiere e cuoche e fornaie.	13 He wil take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers.
14 Prenderà pure i vostri campi, le vostre vigne, i vostri oliveti più belli e li darà ai suoi ministri.	14 He wil take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his officials.
15 Sulle vostre sementi e sulle vostre vigne prenderà le decime e le darà ai suoi cortigiani e ai suoi ministri.	15 He wil tithe your crops and vineyards to provide for his courtiers and his officials.
16 Vi prenderà i servi e le serve, i vostri armenti migliori e i vostri asini e li adopererà nei suoi lavori.	16 He wil take the best of your servants, men and women, of your oxen and your donkeys, and makethem work for him.
17 Metterà la decima sulle vostre greggi e voi stessi diventerete suoi servi.	17 He wil tithe your flocks, and you yourselves wil become his slaves.
18 Allora griderete a causa del re che avrete voluto eleggere, ma il Signore non vi ascolterà».	18 When that day comes, you wil cry aloud because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but onthat day Yahweh wil not hear you.'
19 Il popolo rifiutò di ascoltare la voce di Samuele e disse: «No! Ci sia un re su di noi.	19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel. They said, 'No! We are determined to have a king,
20 Saremo anche noi come tutti i popoli; il nostro re ci farà da giudice, uscirà alla nostra testa e combatterà le nostre battaglie».	20 so that we can be like the other nations, with our own king to rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'
21 Samuele ascoltò tutti i discorsi del popolo e li riferì all’orecchio del Signore.	21 Samuel listened to al that the people had to say and repeated it in Yahweh's ear.
22 Il Signore disse a Samuele: «Ascoltali: lascia regnare un re su di loro». Samuele disse agli Israeliti: «Ciascuno torni alla sua città!».	22 Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'Do as they ask and give them a king.' Samuel then said to theIsraelites, 'Go home, each of you, to his own town.'
