Giosuè 2

BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Giosuè, figlio di Nun, di nascosto inviò da Sittìm due spie, ingiungendo: «Andate, osservate il territorio e Gerico». Essi andarono ed entrarono in casa di una prostituta di nome Raab. Lì dormirono.	1 From Shittim, Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men to reconnoitre. He said, 'Go and explore thecountry and Jericho.' They left; they went into the house of a prostitute called Rahab, to spend the night there.
2 Fu riferito al re di Gerico: «Guarda che alcuni degli Israeliti sono venuti qui, questa notte, per esplorare il territorio».	2 The king of Jericho was told, 'Some men have come here tonight from the Israelites, to reconnoitre thecountry.'
3 Allora il re di Gerico mandò a dire a Raab: «Fa’ uscire gli uomini che sono venuti da te e sono entrati in casa tua, perché sono venuti a esplorare tutto il territorio».	3 The king of Jericho then sent a message to Rahab, 'Send out the men who came to you and are lodgingin your house, for they have come to reconnoitre the whole country.'
4 Allora la donna prese i due uomini e, dopo averli nascosti, rispose: «Sì, sono venuti da me quegli uomini, ma non sapevo di dove fossero.	4 But the woman took the two men and hid them. 'It is true,' she said, 'the men did come to me, but I didnot know where they came from.
5 All’imbrunire, quando stava per chiudersi la porta della città, uscirono e non so dove siano andati. Inseguiteli, presto! Li raggiungerete di certo».	5 When the city gate was about to be closed at nightfal , the men went out and I cannot say where theyhave gone. Follow them quickly and you wil overtake them.'
6 Ella invece li aveva fatti salire sulla terrazza e li aveva nascosti fra gli steli di lino che teneva lì ammucchiati.	6 She had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under some stalks of flax which she had laid outthere.
7 Quelli li inseguirono sulla strada del Giordano, fino ai guadi, e si chiuse la porta della città, dopo che furono usciti gli inseguitori.	7 The men hurried in pursuit of them towards the Jordan, as far as the fords, and the gate was shut oncethe pursuers had gone through.
8 Quegli uomini non si erano ancora coricati quando la donna salì da loro sulla terrazza,	8 The two men had not yet settled down for the night when Rahab came up to them on the roof.
9 e disse loro: «So che il Signore vi ha consegnato la terra. Ci è piombato addosso il terrore di voi e davanti a voi tremano tutti gli abitanti della regione,	9 She said to them, 'I know that Yahweh has given you this country, that we are afraid of you and thateveryone living in this country has been seized with terror at your approach;
10 poiché udimmo che il Signore ha prosciugato le acque del Mar Rosso davanti a voi, quando usciste dall’Egitto, e quanto avete fatto ai due re amorrei oltre il Giordano, Sicon e Og, da voi votati allo sterminio.	10 for we have heard how Yahweh dried up the Sea of Reeds before you when you came out of Egyptand what you did to the two Amorite kings across the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you put under the curse ofdestruction.
11 Quando l’udimmo, il nostro cuore venne meno e nessuno ha più coraggio dinanzi a voi, perché il Signore, vostro Dio, è Dio lassù in cielo e quaggiù sulla terra.	11 When we heard this, our hearts failed us, and now no one has any courage left to resist you, sinceYahweh your God is God both in heaven above and on earth beneath.
12 Ora giuratemi per il Signore che, come io ho usato benevolenza con voi, così anche voi userete benevolenza con la casa di mio padre; datemi dunque un segno sicuro	12 So, swear to me now by Yahweh, since I have been kind to you,
13 che lascerete in vita mio padre, mia madre, i miei fratelli, le mie sorelle e quanto loro appartiene e risparmierete le nostre vite dalla morte».	13 that you in your turn will be kind to my father's family; and give me a sure sign of this: that you wilspare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters and al who belong to them, and will preserveus from death.'
14 Quegli uomini le dissero: «Siamo disposti a morire al vostro posto, purché voi non riveliate questo nostro accordo; quando poi il Signore ci consegnerà la terra, ti tratteremo con benevolenza e lealtà».	14 The men replied, 'We pledge you our lives, provided that you say nothing about our mission. WhenYahweh has given us the country, we shal treat you kindly and faithful y.'
15 Allora ella li fece scendere con una corda dalla finestra, dal momento che la sua casa era addossata alla parete delle mura, e là ella abitava,	15 She then let them down from the window on a rope, as her house was against the city wal and sheactual y lived in the wal .
16 e disse loro: «Andate verso i monti, perché non v’incontrino gli inseguitori. Rimanete nascosti là tre giorni, fino al loro ritorno; poi andrete per la vostra strada».	16 'Make for the hil s,' she said, 'or you may run into your pursuers. Hide there for three days, until yourpursuers have come back, and then go on your way.'
17 Quegli uomini le risposero: «Saremo sciolti da questo giuramento che ci hai richiesto, se non osservi queste condizioni:	17 The men said, 'This is how we shall fulfil the oath which you have made us swear:
18 quando noi entreremo nella terra, legherai questa cordicella di filo scarlatto alla finestra da cui ci hai fatto scendere e radunerai dentro casa, presso di te, tuo padre, tua madre, i tuoi fratelli e tutta la famiglia di tuo padre.	18 when we invade the country, you must tie this scarlet cord to the window from which you let us down,and collect your father, mother, brothers and entire family inside your house.
19 Chiunque uscirà fuori dalla porta della tua casa, sarà responsabile lui della sua vita, non noi; per chiunque invece starà con te in casa, saremo responsabili noi, se gli si metteranno le mani addosso.	19 If anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood wil be on his own head and weshall not be to blame; but the blood of al staying inside the house with you wil be on our heads if a hand is laidon any of them.
20 Ma se tu rivelerai questo nostro accordo, noi saremo liberi dal giuramento che ci hai richiesto».	20 But if you divulge our mission in the meanwhile, we shal be free of the oath which you have made usswear.'
21 Ella rispose: «Sia come dite». Poi li congedò e quelli se ne andarono. Ella legò la cordicella scarlatta alla finestra.	21 She replied, 'Let it be as you say.' She let them go, and they left. She then tied the scarlet cord to thewindow.
22 Se ne andarono e raggiunsero i monti. Vi rimasero tre giorni, finché non furono tornati gli inseguitori. Gli inseguitori li avevano cercati in ogni direzione, senza trovarli.	22 They left and made for the hil s. They stayed there for three days, until their pursuers had gone home,having scoured the countryside without finding them.
23 Quei due uomini allora presero la via del ritorno, scesero dai monti e attraversarono il fiume. Vennero da Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e gli raccontarono tutto quanto era loro accaduto.	23 The two men then came down again from the hil s, crossed over and, going to Joshua son of Nun, toldhim everything that had happened to them.
24 Dissero a Giosuè: «Il Signore ha consegnato nelle nostre mani tutta la terra e davanti a noi tremano già tutti gli abitanti della regione».	24 To Joshua they said, 'Yahweh has put the whole country at our mercy, and its inhabitants are al panic-stricken at our approach.'
