1 Paolo si recò anche a Derbe e a Listra. Vi era qui un discepolo chiamato Timòteo, figlio di una donna giudea credente e di padre greco:	1 From there he went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra, where there was a disciple cal ed Timothy, whosemother was Jewish and had become a believer; but his father was a Greek.
2 era assai stimato dai fratelli di Listra e di Icònio.	2 The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke wel of him,
3 Paolo volle che partisse con lui, lo prese e lo fece circoncidere a motivo dei Giudei che si trovavano in quelle regioni: tutti infatti sapevano che suo padre era greco.	3 and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travel ing companion, had him circumcised. This was onaccount of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.
4 Percorrendo le città, trasmettevano loro le decisioni prese dagli apostoli e dagli anziani di Gerusalemme, perché le osservassero.	4 As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles andelders in Jerusalem, with instructions to observe them.
5 Le Chiese intanto andavano fortificandosi nella fede e crescevano di numero ogni giorno.	5 So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.
6 Attraversarono quindi la Frìgia e la regione della Galazia, poiché lo Spirito Santo aveva impedito loro di proclamare la Parola nella provincia di Asia.	6 They travel ed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, because they had been told by the Holy Spiritnot to preach the word in Asia.
7 Giunti verso la Mìsia, cercavano di passare in Bitìnia, ma lo Spirito di Gesù non lo permise loro;	7 When they reached the frontier of Mysia they tried to go into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus wouldnot al ow them,
8 così, lasciata da parte la Mìsia, scesero a Tròade.	8 they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.
9 Durante la notte apparve a Paolo una visione: era un Macèdone che lo supplicava: «Vieni in Macedonia e aiutaci!».	9 One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and kept urging him in these words, 'Comeacross to Macedonia and help us.'
10 Dopo che ebbe questa visione, subito cercammo di partire per la Macedonia, ritenendo che Dio ci avesse chiamati ad annunciare loro il Vangelo.	10 Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced thatGod had cal ed us to bring them the good news.
11 Salpati da Tròade, facemmo vela direttamente verso Samotràcia e, il giorno dopo, verso Neàpoli	11 Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis,
12 e di qui a Filippi, colonia romana e città del primo distretto della Macedonia. Restammo in questa città alcuni giorni.	12 and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that district of Macedonia.
13 Il sabato uscimmo fuori della porta lungo il fiume, dove ritenevamo che si facesse la preghiera e, dopo aver preso posto, rivolgevamo la parola alle donne là riunite.	13 After a few days in this city we went outside the gates beside a river as it was the Sabbath and thiswas a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting.
14 Ad ascoltare c’era anche una donna di nome Lidia, commerciante di porpora, della città di Tiàtira, una credente in Dio, e il Signore le aprì il cuore per aderire alle parole di Paolo.	14 One of these women was called Lydia, a woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dyetrade, and who revered God. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying.
15 Dopo essere stata battezzata insieme alla sua famiglia, ci invitò dicendo: «Se mi avete giudicata fedele al Signore, venite e rimanete nella mia casa». E ci costrinse ad accettare.	15 After she and her household had been baptised she kept urging us, 'If you judge me a true believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay with us.' And she would take no refusal.
16 Mentre andavamo alla preghiera, venne verso di noi una schiava che aveva uno spirito di divinazione: costei, facendo l’indovina, procurava molto guadagno ai suoi padroni.	16 It happened one day that as we were going to prayer, we were met by a slave-girl who was asoothsayer and made a lot of money for her masters by foretel ing the future.
17 Ella si mise a seguire Paolo e noi, gridando: «Questi uomini sono servi del Dio altissimo e vi annunciano la via della salvezza».	17 This girl started fol owing Paul and the rest of us and shouting, 'Here are the servants of the MostHigh God; they have come to tel you how to be saved!'
18 Così fece per molti giorni, finché Paolo, mal sopportando la cosa, si rivolse allo spirito e disse: «In nome di Gesù Cristo ti ordino di uscire da lei». E all’istante lo spirito uscì.	18 She did this day after day until Paul was exasperated and turned round and said to the spirit, 'I orderyou in the name of Jesus Christ to leave that woman.' The spirit went out of her then and there.
19 Ma i padroni di lei, vedendo che era svanita la speranza del loro guadagno, presero Paolo e Sila e li trascinarono nella piazza principale davanti ai capi della città.	19 When her masters saw that there was no hope of making any more money out of her, they seizedPaul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities.
20 Presentandoli ai magistrati dissero: «Questi uomini gettano il disordine nella nostra città; sono Giudei	20 Taking them before the magistrates they said, 'These people are causing a disturbance in our city.They are Jews
21 e predicano usanze che a noi Romani non è lecito accogliere né praticare».	21 and are advocating practices which it is unlawful for us as Romans to accept or fol ow.'
22 La folla allora insorse contro di loro e i magistrati, fatti strappare loro i vestiti, ordinarono di bastonarli	22 The crowd joined in and showed its hostility to them, so the magistrates had them stripped andordered them to be flogged.
23 e, dopo averli caricati di colpi, li gettarono in carcere e ordinarono al carceriere di fare buona guardia.	23 They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a closewatch on them.
24 Egli, ricevuto quest’ordine, li gettò nella parte più interna del carcere e assicurò i loro piedi ai ceppi.	24 So, fol owing such instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in thestocks.
25 Verso mezzanotte Paolo e Sila, in preghiera, cantavano inni a Dio, mentre i prigionieri stavano ad ascoltarli.	25 In the middle of the night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the otherprisoners listened.
26 D’improvviso venne un terremoto così forte che furono scosse le fondamenta della prigione; subito si aprirono tutte le porte e caddero le catene di tutti.	26 Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. Al the doors flew openand the chains fel from al the prisoners.
27 Il carceriere si svegliò e, vedendo aperte le porte del carcere, tirò fuori la spada e stava per uccidersi, pensando che i prigionieri fossero fuggiti.	27 When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commitsuicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.
28 Ma Paolo gridò forte: «Non farti del male, siamo tutti qui».	28 But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, 'Do yourself no harm; we are al here.'
29 Quello allora chiese un lume, si precipitò dentro e tremando cadde ai piedi di Paolo e Sila;	29 He cal ed for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas,
30 poi li condusse fuori e disse: «Signori, che cosa devo fare per essere salvato?».	30 and escorted them out, saying, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'
31 Risposero: «Credi nel Signore Gesù e sarai salvato tu e la tua famiglia».	31 They told him, 'Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you wil be saved, and your household too.'
32 E proclamarono la parola del Signore a lui e a tutti quelli della sua casa.	32 Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to al his household.
33 Egli li prese con sé, a quell’ora della notte, ne lavò le piaghe e subito fu battezzato lui con tutti i suoi;	33 Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with al hishousehold.
34 poi li fece salire in casa, apparecchiò la tavola e fu pieno di gioia insieme a tutti i suoi per avere creduto in Dio.	34 Afterwards he took them into his house and gave them a meal, and the whole household celebratedtheir conversion to belief in God.
35 Fattosi giorno, i magistrati inviarono le guardie a dire: «Rimetti in libertà quegli uomini!».	35 When it was daylight the magistrates sent the lictors with the order: 'Release those men.'
36 Il carceriere riferì a Paolo questo messaggio: «I magistrati hanno dato ordine di lasciarvi andare! Uscite dunque e andate in pace».	36 The gaoler reported the message to Paul, 'The magistrates have sent an order for your release; youcan go now and be on your way.'
37 Ma Paolo disse alle guardie: «Ci hanno percosso in pubblico e senza processo, pur essendo noi cittadini romani, e ci hanno gettato in carcere; e ora ci fanno uscire di nascosto? No davvero! Vengano loro di persona a condurci fuori!».	37 'What!' Paul replied. 'Without trial they gave us a public flogging, though we are Roman citizens, andthrew us into prison, and now they want to send us away on the quiet! Oh no! They must come and escort us outthemselves.'
38 E le guardie riferirono ai magistrati queste parole. All’udire che erano cittadini romani, si spaventarono;	38 The lictors reported this to the magistrates, who were terrified when they heard they were Romancitizens.
39 vennero e si scusarono con loro; poi li fecero uscire e li pregarono di andarsene dalla città.	39 They came and urged them to leave the town.
40 Usciti dal carcere, si recarono a casa di Lidia, dove incontrarono i fratelli, li esortarono e partirono.	40 From the prison they went to Lydia's house where they saw all the brothers and gave them someencouragement; then they left.
