1 «Dio dei padri e Signore della misericordia, che tutto hai creato con la tua parola,	1 "O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy, who hast made all things by thy word,
2 e con la tua sapienza hai formato l’uomo perché dominasse sulle creature che tu hai fatto,	2 and by thy wisdom hast formed man, to have dominion over the creatures thou hast made,
3 e governasse il mondo con santità e giustizia ed esercitasse il giudizio con animo retto,	3 and rule the world in holiness and righteousness, and pronounce judgment in uprightness of soul,
4 dammi la sapienza, che siede accanto a te in trono, e non mi escludere dal numero dei tuoi figli,	4 give me the wisdom that sits by thy throne, and do not reject me from among thy servants.
5 perché io sono tuo schiavo e figlio della tua schiava, uomo debole e dalla vita breve, incapace di comprendere la giustizia e le leggi.	5 For I am thy slave and the son of thy maidservant, a man who is weak and short-lived, with little understanding of judgment and laws;
6 Se qualcuno fra gli uomini fosse perfetto, privo della sapienza che viene da te, sarebbe stimato un nulla.	6 for even if one is perfect among the sons of men, yet without the wisdom that comes from thee he will be regarded as nothing.
7 Tu mi hai prescelto come re del tuo popolo e giudice dei tuoi figli e delle tue figlie;	7 Thou hast chosen me to be king of thy people and to be judge over thy sons and daughters.
8 mi hai detto di costruirti un tempio sul tuo santo monte, un altare nella città della tua dimora, immagine della tenda santa che ti eri preparata fin da principio.	8 Thou hast given command to build a temple on thy holy mountain, and an altar in the city of thy habitation, a copy of the holy tent which thou didst prepare from the beginning.
9 Con te è la sapienza che conosce le tue opere, che era presente quando creavi il mondo; lei sa quel che piace ai tuoi occhi e ciò che è conforme ai tuoi decreti.	9 With thee is wisdom, who knows thy works and was present when thou didst make the world, and who understand what is pleasing in thy sight and what is right according to thy commandments.
10 Inviala dai cieli santi, mandala dal tuo trono glorioso, perché mi assista e mi affianchi nella mia fatica e io sappia ciò che ti è gradito.	10 Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of thy glory send her, that she may be with me and toil, and that I may learn what is pleasing to thee.
11 Ella infatti tutto conosce e tutto comprende: mi guiderà con prudenza nelle mie azioni e mi proteggerà con la sua gloria.	11 For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory.
12 Così le mie opere ti saranno gradite; io giudicherò con giustizia il tuo popolo e sarò degno del trono di mio padre.	12 Then my works will be acceptable, and I shall judge thy people justly, and shall be worthy of the throne of my father.
13 Quale uomo può conoscere il volere di Dio? Chi può immaginare che cosa vuole il Signore?	13 For what man can learn the counsel of God? Or who can discern what the Lord wills?
14 I ragionamenti dei mortali sono timidi e incerte le nostre riflessioni,	14 For the reasoning of mortals is worthless, and our designs are likely to fail,
15 perché un corpo corruttibile appesantisce l’anima e la tenda d’argilla opprime una mente piena di preoccupazioni.	15 for a perishable body weighs down the soul, and this earthy tent burdens the thoughtful mind.
16 A stento immaginiamo le cose della terra, scopriamo con fatica quelle a portata di mano; ma chi ha investigato le cose del cielo?	16 We can hardly guess at what is on earth, and what is at hand we find with labor; but who has traced out what is in the heavens?
17 Chi avrebbe conosciuto il tuo volere, se tu non gli avessi dato la sapienza e dall’alto non gli avessi inviato il tuo santo spirito?	17 Who has learned thy counsel, unless thou hast given wisdom and sent thy holy Spirit from on high?
18 Così vennero raddrizzati i sentieri di chi è sulla terra; gli uomini furono istruiti in ciò che ti è gradito e furono salvati per mezzo della sapienza».	18 And thus the paths of those on earth were set right, and men were taught what pleases thee, and were saved by wisdom."
