1 C'è un rimprovero che è fuori tempo, c'è chi tace ed è prudente.	1 An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold his peace.
2 Quanto è meglio rimproverare che covare l'ira!	2 It is much better to admonish than to lose one's temper, for one who admits his fault will be kept from disgrace.
3 Chi si confessa colpevole evita l'umiliazione.	3 Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion.
4 Un eunuco che vuol deflorare una ragazza, così chi vuol rendere giustizia con la violenza.	4 One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and is disliked.
5 C'è chi tace ed è ritenuto saggio, e c'è chi è odiato per la sua loquacità.	5 One man is silent because he has nothing to say; another is silent, biding his time.
6 C'è chi tace, perché non sa che cosa rispondere, e c'è chi tace, perché conosce il momento propizio.	6 A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting fool ignores the proper time.
7 L'uomo saggio sta zitto fino al momento opportuno, il millantatore e lo stolto lo trascurano.	7 He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority is hated.
8 Chi abbonda nel parlare si renderà abominevole; chi vuole assolutamente imporsi sarà odiato.	8 Some misfortunes bring success; some things gained are a man's loss.
9 Nelle disgrazie può trovarsi la fortuna per un uomo, mentre un profitto può essere una perdita.	9 Some gifts do one no good, and some must be paid back double.
10 C'è una generosità, che non ti arreca vantaggi e c'è chi dall'umiliazione alza la testa.	10 Humiliation can follow fame, while from obscurity a man can lift up his head.
11 .	11 A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.
12 C'è chi compra molte cose con poco, e chi le paga sette volte il loro valore.	12 A wise man makes himself popular by a few words, but fools pour forth their blandishments in vain.
13 Il saggio si rende amabile con le sue parole, le cortesie degli stolti sono sciupate.	13 A gift from a rogue will do you no good, for in his eyes his one gift is equal to seven.
14 Il dono di uno stolto non ti gioverà, perché i suoi occhi bramano ricevere più di quanto ha dato.	14 He gives little and criticizes often, and like a crier he shouts aloud. He lends today, he asks it back tomorrow; hateful indeed is such a man.
15 Egli darà poco, ma rinfaccerà molto; aprirà la sua bocca come un banditore. Oggi darà un prestito e domani richiederà; uomo odioso è costui.	15 A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity;

17 Quelli che mangiano il mio pane sono lingue cattive". Quanto spesso e quanti si burleranno di lui!	17 A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue; that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly.
18 Meglio scivolare sul pavimento che con la lingua; per questo la caduta dei cattivi giunge rapida.	18 Insipid food is the untimely tale; the unruly are always ready to offer it.
19 Un uomo senza grazia è un discorso inopportuno: è sempre sulla bocca dei maleducati.	19 A proverb when spoken by a fool is unwelcome, for he does not utter it at the proper time.
20 Non si accetta una massima dalla bocca dello stolto, perché non è mai detta a proposito.	20 A man through want may be unable to sin, yet in this tranquility he cannot rest.
21 C'è chi è impedito di peccare dalla miseria e durante il riposo non avrà rimorsi.	21 One may lose his life through shame, and perish through a fool's intimidation.
22 C'è chi si rovina per rispetto umano e si rovina per la faccia di uno stolto.	22 A man makes a promise to a friend out of shame, and has him for his enemy needlessly.
23 C'è chi per rispetto umano fa promesse a un amico; in tal modo se lo rende gratuitamente nemico.	23 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is constantly on the lips of the unruly.
24 Brutta macchia nell'uomo la menzogna, si trova sempre sulla bocca degli ignoranti.	24 Better a thief than an inveterate liar, yet both will suffer disgrace;
25 Meglio un ladro che un mentitore abituale, ma tutti e due condivideranno la rovina.	25 A liar's way leads to dishonor, his shame remains ever with him.
26 L'abitudine del bugiardo è un disonore, la vergogna lo accompagnerà sempre.	26 A wise man advances himself by his words, a prudent man pleases the great.
27 Il saggio si fa onore con i discorsi, l'uomo prudente piace ai grandi.	27 He who works his land has abundant crops, he who pleases the great is pardoned his faults.
28 Chi lavora la terra accrescerà il raccolto; chi piace ai grandi si fa perdonare l'ingiustizia.	28 Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof.
29 Regali e doni accecano gli occhi dei saggi, come bavaglio sulla bocca, soffocano i rimproveri.	29 Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure-- of what value is either?
30 Sapienza nascosta e tesoro invisibile: a che servono l'una e l'altro?	30 Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his wisdom.
31 Fa meglio chi nasconde la stoltezza che colui che nasconde la sapienza.
