| 2 I Filistei si buttarono su Saul e sui suoi figli e uccisero Gionata, Abinadab e Malchishua, figli di Saul. | 2 The Philistines bore down on Saul and his sons, and they killed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua,Saul's sons. |
| 3 Infine la battaglia pesò tutta su Saul: gli arcieri lo presero di mira e lo ferirono gravemente. | 3 The fighting grew fiercer round Saul; the archers came upon him, and he was severely wounded |
| 4 Allora Saul disse a chi gli portava Je armi: « Estrai la tua spada e trafiggimi con essa, affinchè non giungano questi incirconcisi e sfoghino il loro astio su di me ». Ma chi gli portava le armi non volle, perchè temeva assai e Saul, afferrata la spada, vi si gettò sopra. | 4 by the archers. Saul then said to his armour-bearer, 'Draw your sword and run me through with it; I donot want these uncircumcised men to come and make fun of me.' But his armour-bearer was very much afraidand would not do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. |
| 5 Come chi gli portava le armi vide Saul morto, si gettò anche lui sulla propria spada e morì con lui | 5 His armour-bearer, seeing that Saul was dead, fel on his sword too and died with him. |
| 6 Morirono dunque Saul, i suoi tre figli e il suo scudiero, come anche tutti i suoi uomini in quel giorno stesso, insieme. | 6 Thus died Saul, his three sons and his armour-bearer, together on the same day. |
| 7 Gli uomini di Israele, che abitavano la regione della valle e quelli della regione del Giordano, si accorsero che i soldati di Israele erano fuggiti e che Saul con i figli era morto. Allora, abbandonate le loro città, fuggirono. Vennero perciò i Filistei e vi si stabilirono. | 7 When the Israelites who were on the other side of the Jordan saw that the Israelites had been routedand that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. The Philistines then came andoccupied them. |
| 8 Il giorno dopo, i Filistei andarono a spogliare i trafitti e trovarono Saul e i tre figli che erano caduti sul monte Gelboe. | 8 When the Philistines came on the fol owing day to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sonslying on Mount Gilboa. |
| 9 Ne tagliarono la testa e lo spogliarono delle armi. Spedirono nella terra dei Filistei, intorno, a dare il lieto annuncio ai loro dèi e al popolo. | 9 They cut off his head and, stripping him of his armour, had these carried round the territory of thePhilistines to proclaim the good news to their idols and their people. |

| 11 Quando gli abitanti di Jabesh di Galaad ebbero udito ciò che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul, | 11 When the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, |
| 12 si levarono tutti i prodi e, dopo aver camminato la notte intera, presero la salma di Saul e le salme dei figli dal muro di Bet-Shean, le portarono a Jabesh, dove le bruciarono. | 12 the warriors al set out and, having marched al night, took the bodies of Saul and his sons off thewal s of Beth-Shean; they brought them to Jabesh and burned them there. |
| 13 Ne raccolsero poi le ossa e le seppellirono sotto la tamerice, a Jabesh, e digiunarono sette giorni. | 13 They then took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk of Jabesh, and fasted for sevendays. |
