| 1 Mi fu rivolta la parola di Jahve: | 1 The word of Yahweh was addressed to me as follows, |
| 2 « Che cosa avete voi che andate ripetendo sul paese di Israele questa sentenza mordace: “I padri mangiano uva acerba e i figli ne hanno i denti allegati ”? | 2 'Why do you keep repeating this proverb in the land of Israel: The parents have eaten unripe grapes;and the children's teeth are set on edge? |
| 3 Per la mia vita! — oracolo del Signore Jahve — non deve trovarsi più alcuno tra di voi, in Israele, che ripete questo proverbio. | 3 'As I live -- declares the Lord Yahweh -- you wil have no further cause to repeat this proverb in Israel. |
| 4 Ecco, tutti mi apparrengong: la vita del padre come quella del figlio; ecco, morirà la persona che pecca. | 4 Look, al life belongs to me; the father's life and the son's life, both alike belong to me. The one whohas sinned is the one to die. |
| 5 Se uno è giusto e pratica la giustizia e il diritto, | 5 'But if a man is upright, his actions law-abiding and upright, |
| 6 se non mangia carne insieme con il sangue, non leva gli occhi verso gli idoli della casa di Israele, non disonora la moglie del prossimo nè si accosta a donna mestruata, | 6 and he does not eat on the mountains or raise his eyes to the foul idols of the House of Israel, doesnot defile his neighbour's wife or touch a woman during her periods, |
| 7 se non opprime nessuno, restituisce il pegno che ha fin debito, non compie rapine, dà il pane all’affamato e riveste l’ignudo, | 7 oppresses no one, returns the pledge on a debt, does not rob, gives his own food to the hungry, hisclothes to those who lack clothing, |
| 8 se non presta a interesse e non riscuote usura, se tiene lontana la mano dall’iniquità e giudica con lealtà tra uomo e uomo, | 8 does not lend for profit, does not charge interest, abstains from evil, gives honest judgement betweenone person and another, |
| 9 se segue le mie leggi e adempie i miei decreti agendo rettamente, egli è giusto: certa mente vivrà ». Oracolo del Signore Jahve. | 9 keeps my laws and sincerely respects my judgements -- someone like this is truly upright and will live-- declares the Lord Yahweh. |
| 10 « Se egli genera un figlio violento, che versi sangue e compia tali cose; | 10 'But if he has a son prone to violence and bloodshed, who commits one of these misdeeds- |
| 11 e questi, dunque non fa nulla di quanto è stato detto, ma, invece. mangia carne insieme con il sangue, disonora la moglie del suo prossimo, | 11 even though the father never has -- a son who dares to eat on the mountains, who defiles hisneighbour's wife, |
| 12 opprime il misero e il povero, fa rapine, non restituisce il pegno, alza gli occhi agli idoli, compie abomini, presta a interesse e riscuote usura; | 12 who oppresses the poor and needy, robs, fails to return pledges, raises his eyes to foul idols,engages in loathsome practices, |
| 13 certamente non vivrà: poichè ha compiuto tutti questi abomini, morirà certamente; dovrà a se stesso la propria morte. | 13 lends for profit, or charges interest, such a person will by no means live; having committed al theseappal ing crimes he wil die, and his blood be on his own head. |
| 14 Se, invece, egli genera un figlio e questi, vedendo tutti i peccati che il padre ha commesso, riflette e non commette nulla di simile, | 14 'But if he in turn has a son who, in spite of seeing al the sins that his father has committed, does notimitate him, |
| 15 non mangia carne insieme con il sangue, non alza gli occhi agli idoli della casa di Israele, non disonora la moglie del prossimo, | 15 does not eat on the mountains or raise his eyes to the foul idols of the House of Israel, does notdefile his neighbour's wife, |
| 16 non opprime nessuno, non sequestra pegno nè fa rapine, dà il pane all’affamato e riveste l’ignudo, | 16 oppresses no one, takes no pledges, does not rob, gives his own food to the hungry, his clothes tothose who lack clothing, |
| 17 tiene lontana dall’iniquità la mano, non prende interesse nè usura, adempie i miei decreti e segue le mie leggi; egli non morirà per l’iniquità del padre, ma certamente vivrà. | 17 abstains from evil, does not lend for profit or charge interest, respects my judgements and keeps mylaws, he will not die for his father's sins: he wil most certainly live. |
| 18 Suo padre, invece, poichè ha fatto vessazioni e rapine, ha compiuto ciò che non è bene in mezzo al suo popolo, ecco muore per la sua iniquità. | 18 But his father, because he was violent, robbed others and never did good among his people, willmost certainly die in his guilt. |
| 19 Voi dite: “ Per qual motivo il figlio non partecipa alla pena dei reati del padre? ”. Perchè ha praticato la giustizia e il diritto, ha custodito tutte le mie leggi e le ha messe in pratica; sì egli vivrà. | 19 'Now, you say, "Why doesn't the son bear his father's guilt?" If the son has been law-abiding andupright, has kept al my laws and fol owed them, most certainly he wil live. |
| 20 Morirà la persona che pecca; un figlio non deve scontare nulla dell'inno del padre e un padre non sconterà nulla dell'iniquità del figlio; sul giusto sarà la sua giustizia e sul malvagio la sua malvagità. | 20 The one who has sinned is the one who must die; a son is not to bear his father's guilt, nor a fatherhis son's guilt. The upright wil be credited with his uprightness, and the wicked with his wickedness. |
| 21 Se il malvagio si allontana da tutti i peccati che ha commesso e osserva le mie leggi e pratici la giustizia e il diritto, rimarrà in vita, non morirà più. | 21 'If the wicked, however, renounces al the sins he has committed, respects my laws and is law-abiding and upright, he wil most certainly live; he will not die. |
| 22 Tutti i misfatti che ha compiuto saranno dimenticati; vivrà per la giustizia che ha praticato. | 22 None of the crimes he committed wil be remembered against him from then on; he wil most certainlylive because of his upright actions. |
| 23 Avrei forse gioia per la morte del perverso — oracolo del Signore Jahve — o non piuttosto che abbandoni la sua condotta e viva? | 23 Would I take pleasure in the death of the wicked -- declares the Lord Yahweh -- and not prefer to seehim renounce his wickedness and live? |
| 24 Se il giusto tralascia la giustizia e opera l’iniquità, imitando tutti gli abomini che l’empio suole commettere, vivrà egli? Tutte le opere giuste che egli ha compiuto saranno dimenticate; egli morirà per la infedeltà e i suoi peccati. | 24 'But if the upright abandons uprightness and does wrong by copying all the loathsome practices ofthe wicked, is he to live? Al his upright actions will be forgotten from then on; for the infidelity of which he isguilty and the sin which he has committed, he wil most certainly die. |
| 25 Voi dite: “ Non è retta la condotta del Signore”. Ebbene, udite, o casa di Israele: è la mia condotta che non è retta o non piuttosto la vostra? | 25 'Now, you say, "What the Lord does is unjust." Now listen, House of Israel: is what I do unjust? Is itnot what you do that is unjust? |
| 26 Se il giusto desiste dalla giustizia e commette l’iniquità e muore, morirà per l'iniquità che ha commesso. | 26 When the upright abandons uprightness and does wrong and dies, he dies because of the wrongwhich he himself has done. |
| 27 Se, invece, il perverso desiste dalle azioni malvagie che ha compiuto e pratica la giustizia e il diritto, egli salverà se stesso. | 27 Similarly, when the wicked abandons wickedness to become law-abiding and upright, he saves hisown life. |
| 28 Se riflette e desiste da tutti i misfatti che ha commesso, vivrà certamente, non morirà più. | 28 Having chosen to renounce al his previous crimes, he wil most certainly live: he wil not die. |
| 29 La casa di Israele va dicendo: “Non è retta la condotta del Signore! ”. È la mia condotta che non è retta o non piuttosto la vostra? | 29 And yet the House of Israel says, "What the Lord does is unjust." Is what I do unjust, House of Israel?Is it not what you do that is unjust? |
| 30 Perciò giudicherò ciascuno di voi secondo la propria condotta, o casa d’Israele — oracolo del Signore Jahve. Desistete e convertitevi da tutti i vostri misfatti e non siano più per voi occasione di colpa. | 30 So in future, House of Israel, I shal judge each of you by what that person does -- declares the LordYahweh. Repent, renounce al your crimes, avoid al occasions for guilt. |
| 31 Sbarazzatevi di tutti i vostri peccati, per i quali siete divenuti infedeli; formatevi un cuore nuovo e uno spirito nuovo. Perchè vorreste perire, o casa di Israele? | 31 Shake off all the crimes you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit!Why die, House of Israel? |
| 32 Perchè non mi compiaccio della morte del morituro, — oracolo del Signore Jahve. Convertitevi e vivrete! ». | 32 I take no pleasure in the death of anyone -- declares the Lord Yahweh -- so repent and live!' |
