| 1 Così dice Jahve: « Ecco, suscito contro Babilonia. e contro gli abitanti della Caldea un vento distruttore; | 1 Thus saith the Lord: Behold I will raise up as it were a pestilential wind against Babylon and against the inhabitants thereof, who have lifted up their heart against me. |
| 2 io invierò in Babilonia spulatori che la spuleranno e devasteranno la sua regione, poichè le piomberanno addosso da tutte le parti nel giorno della tribolazione ». | 2 And I will send to Babylon fanners, and they shall fan her, and shall destroy her land: for they are come upon her on every side in the day of her affliction. |
| 3 Non deponga l’arciere l’arco e non si spogli della corazza. Non risparmiate i suoi giovani, sterminate tutto il suo esercito. | 3 Let not him that bendeth, bend his bow, and let not, him go up that is armed with a coat of mail: spare not her young men, destroy all her army. |
| 4 Cadano trafitti nel paese dei Caldei e feriti nelle sue piazze, | 4 And the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and the wounded in the regions thereof. |
| 5 perchè la loro terra è piena di delitto davanti al Santo di Israele. Ma Israele e Giuda non sono rese vedove dal loro Dio, Jahve degli eserciti. | 5 For Israel and Juda have not been forsaken by their God the Lord of hosts: but their land hath been filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel. |
| 6 Fuggite di mezzo a Babilonia, ognuno ponga in salvo la sua vita; non vogliate perire per l’iniquità di essa, poichè questo è il tempo della vendetta di Jahve, egli le dà la sua retribuzione. | 6 Flee ye from the midst of Babylon, and let every one save his own life: be not silent upon her iniquity: for it is the time of revenge from the Lord, he will I render unto her what she hath deserved. |
| 7 Babilonia, nelle mani di Jahve, era un calice d’oro con il quale egli inebriava tutta la terra; del suo vino hanno bevuto i popoli, perciò sono divenuti deliranti. | 7 Babylon hath been a golden cup in the hand of the Lord, that made all the earth drunk: the nations have drunk of her wine, and therefore they have staggered. |
| 8 All’improvviso Babilonia è caduta, è stata infranta; levate alti lamenti per essa; prendete balsami per il suo dolore, forse potrà essere guarita. | 8 Babylon is suddenly fallen, and destroyed: howl for her, take balm for her pain, if so she may be healed. |
| 9 Abbiamo curato Babilonia, ma non guarita. Abbandonatela! Andiamocene, ciascuno al proprio paese; poichè la sua punizione giunge fino al cielo e si innalza fino alle nubi. | 9 We would have cured Babylon, but she is not healed: let us forsake her, and let us go every man to his own land: because her judgment hath reached even to the heavens, and is lifted up to the clouds. |
| 10 Jahve ha fatto risplendere la nostra giustizia, venite, raccontiamo in Sion l’opera di Jahve nostro Dio. | 10 The Lord hath brought forth our justices: Come, and let us declare in Sion the work of the Lord our God. |
| 11 Appuntite le frecce, riempite le faretre! Jahve eccita lo spirito del re di Media, perchè il suo disegno riguardo a Babilonia è di distruggerla; perchè questa è la vendetta di Jahve, la vendetta per il suo tempio. | 11 Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers, the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: and his mind is against Babylon to destroy it, because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple. |
| 12 Emettete un segnale contro il muro di Babilonia, rafforzate le guardie, ponete sentinelle, preparate gli agguati; poichè Jahve ha ben ideato un progetto, ecco, ha ormai compiuto quanto aveva detto contro gli abitanti di Babilonia. | 12 Upon the walls of Babylon set up the standard, strengthen the watch: set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the Lord hath both purposed, and done all that he spoke against the inhabitants of Babylon. |
| 13 O tu che abiti lungo acque abbondanti, grande per i tuoi tesori, è giunta la tua fine, il cubito del tuo taglio. | 13 O thou that dwellest upon many waters, rich in treasures, thy end is come for thy entire destruction. |
| 14 Jahve degli eserciti ha giurato per se stesso; « Anche se ti avessi riempito di uomini come di locuste, si intonerebbe lo stesso su di te un peana ». | 14 The Lord of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying : I will fill thee with men as with locusts, and they shall lift up a joyful shout against thee. |
| 15 Egli ha fatto la terra con la sua potenza, ha fissato il mondo con la sua saggezza e con la sua intelligenza ha disteso i cieli. | 15 He that made the earth by his power, that hath prepared the world by his wisdom, and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. |
| 16 Al rombo della sua voce rumoreggiano le acque nel cielo, egli fa ascendere le nubi dall’estremità della terra, produce folgori per la pioggia e manda fuori il vento dai suoi ripostigli. | 16 When he uttereth his voice the waters are multiplied in heaven: he lifteth up the clouds from the ends of the earth, he hath turned lightning into rain: and hath brought forth the wind out of his treasures. |
| 17 Rimane inebetito ogni uomo, senza comprendere, resta confuso ogni orafo per le sue statuette, poichè è menzogna ciò che egli ha fuso, senza soffio vitale. | 17 Every man is become foolish by his knowledge: every founder is confounded by his idol, for what he hath cast is a lie, and there is no breath in them. |
| 18 Esse sono vanità, opere ridicole; nel giorno del loro castigo periranno. | 18 They are vain works, and worthy to be laughed at, in the time of their visitation they shall perish. |
| 19 A loro non somiglia la porzione di Giacobbe, perchè Egli ha formato ogni cosa, Israele è la tribù della sua eredità, Jahve degli eserciti è il suo nome. | 19 The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he that made all things he it is, and Israel is the sceptre of his inheritance: the Lord of hosts is his name. |
| 20 « Un martello eri tu per me, uno strumento di guerra; con te abbattevo i popoli, con te annientavo i regni, | 20 Thou dashest together for me the weapons of war, and with thee I will dash nations together, and with thee I will destroy kingdoms: |
| 21 con te abbattevo cavallo e cavaliere, con te abbattevo carro e auriga, | 21 And with thee I will break in pieces the horse, and his rider, and with thee I will break in pieces the chariot, and him that getteth up into it: |
| 22 con te abbattevo uomo e donna, con te abbattevo vecchio e ragazzo, con te abbattevo giovane e vergine, | 22 And with thee I will break in pieces man and woman, and with thee I will break in pieces the old man and the child, and with thee I will break in pieces the young man and the virgin: |
| 23 con te abbattevo pastore e gregge, con te abbattevo bifolco e buoi, con te abbattevo governatori e magistrati. | 23 And with thee I will break in pieces the shepherd and his dock, and with thee I will break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen, and with thee I will break in pieces captains and rulers. |
| 24 Ma ora ripagherò Babilonia e tutti gli abitanti della Caldea, per tutto il male che hanno fatto a Sion, sotto i vostri occhi. Oracolo di Jahve. | 24 And I will render to Babylon, and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil, that they have done in Sion, before your eyes, saith the Lord. |
| 25 Eccomi a te, o monte di distruzione, che distruggi tutta la terra. Io stenderò la mano su di te, ti rotolerò giù dalle rocce e farò di te una montagna bruciata; | 25 Behold I come against thee, thou destroying mountain, saith the Lord, which corruptest the whole earth: and I will stretch out my hand upon thee, and will roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain. |
| 26 da te non si prenderà più una pietra angolare, nè pietra da fondamenta, perchè resterai una desolazione eterna ». Oracolo di Jahve. | 26 And they shall not take of thee a stone for the corner, nor a stone for foundations, but thou shalt be destroyed for ever, saith the Lord. |
| 27 Emettete un segnale nel paese, suonate la tromba fra le nazioni; preparate contro di essa alla guerra santa le nazioni, convocate contro di essa i regni di Ararat, di Minni e di Ashchenaz. Costituite contro di essa generali, fate avanzare i cavalli come locuste setolose. | 27 Set ye up a standard in the land: sound with the trumpet among the nations: prepare the nations against her: call together against her the kings of Ararat, Menni, and Ascenez: number Taphsar against her, bring the horse as the stinging locust. |
| 28 Preparate contro di essa alla guerra santa le nazioni, il re della Media, i suoi governatori, tutti i suoi magistrati, tutta la terra del suo dominio. | 28 Prepare the nations against her, the kings of Media, their captains, and all their rulers, and all the land of their dominion. |
| 29 Trema la terra e freme, perchè si avverano contro Babilonia i disegni di Jahve di ridurre il paese di Babilonia una desolazione, senza abitanti. | 29 And the land shall be in a commotion, and shall be troubled: for the design of the Lord against Babylon shall awake, to make the land of Babylon desert and uninhabitable. |
| 30 Smettono di combattere i prodi di Babilonia, se ne stanno nelle fortezze; la loro prodezza è venuta meno, sono diventati donne. Sono stati incendiati i suoi edifici, sono state rotte le sue sbarre. | 30 The valiant men of Babylon have forborne to fight, they have dwelt in holds: their strength hath failed, and they are become as women: her dwelling places are burnt, her bars are broken. |
| 31 Un corriere corre incontro a un altro corriere, un messaggero incontro a un messaggero per annunciare al re di Babilonia che la sua città è presa da ogni lato. | 31 One running post shall meet another, and messenger shall meet messenger: to tell the king of Babylon that his city is taken from one end to the other: |
| 32 I guadi sono occupati, le fortezze bruciano, gli uomini di guerra sono allibiti. | 32 And that the fords are taken, and the marshes are burnt with fire, and the men of war are affrighted. |
| 33 Poichè così dice Jahve degli eserciti, Dio di Israele: «La figlia di Babilonia è come un’aia al tempo della trebbiatura. Ancora un boro e verrà per lei il tempo della mietitura ». | 33 For thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a thrashingfloor, this is the time of her thrashing: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come. |
| 34 «Mi ha divorato, mi ha consumato Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, mi ha accantonato come un vaso vuoto, mi ha inghiottito come fa il drago, ha riempito il ventre con le mie leccornie ». | 34 Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon hath eaten me up, he hath devoured me: he hath made me as an empty vessel: he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his belly with my delicate meats, and he hath cast me out. |
| 35 «La mia oppressione e la mia carne su Babilonia! » esclama la popolazione di Sion, «e il mio sangue sugli abitanti della Caldea! » dice Gerusalemme. | 35 The wrong done to me, and my flesh be upon Babylon, saith the habitation of Sion : and my blood upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, saith Jerusalem. |
| 36 Pertanto, così dice Jahve: « Ecco, difendo la tua causa, compio la tua vendetta; prosciugherò il suo mare, asciugherò la sua sorgente. | 36 Therefore thus saith the Lord: Behold I will judge thy cause, and will take vengeance for thee, and I will make her sea desolate, and will dry up her spring. |
| 37 Babilonia diventerà un monte di rovine, una dimora di sciacalli, un oggetto di stupore e di scherno, senza abitanti. | 37 And Babylon shall be reduced to heaps, a dwelling place for dragons, an astonishment and a hissing, because there is no inhabitant. |
| 38 Insieme, come leoncelli, essi ruggiscono, rugghiano come piccoli di leonesse. | 38 They shall roar together like lions, they shall shake their manes like young lions. |
| 39 Con tossico io preparerò loro un festino, li inebrierò affinchè si stordiscano e si addormentino in un sonno eterno, senza svegliarsi più. Oracolo di Jahve. | 39 In their heat I will set them drink: and I will make them drunk, that they may slumber, and sleep an everlasting sleep, and awake no more, saith the Lord. |
| 40 Li farò scendere al macello come agnelli, come montoni insieme con i becchi ». | 40 I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, and like rams with kids. |
| 41 Come mai è stato preso e occupato i l’orgoglio di tutta la terra? Come mai è divenuta una desolazione Babilonia fra le nazioni? | 41 How is Sesach taken, and the renowned one of all the earth surprised? How is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations? |
| 42 Il mare è salito su Babilonia, essa è stata sommersa dai gorghi delle onde. | 42 The sea is come up over Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof. |
| 43 Sono divenute una desolazione le sue città, un terreno riarso, una steppa. Nessuno abita più in esse nè le attraversa mai più il figlio dell’uomo. | 43 Her cities are become an astonishment, a land uninhabited and desolate, a land wherein none can dwell, nor son of man pass through it. |
| 44 «Io punirò Bel a Babilonia, gli caverò dalla bocca quanto ha inghiottito. Non affluiranno più a lui le nazioni ». Perfino le mura di Babilonia sono crollate. | 44 And I will visit against Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he had swallowed down: and the rations shall no more flow together to him, for the wall also of Babylon shall fall. |
| 45 Uscite da essa, o popolo mio, ognuno salvi la sua vita dall’ira ardente di Jahve. | 45 Go out of the midst of her, my people: that every man may save his life from the fierce wrath of the Lord. |
| 46 Non si avvilisca il vostro cuore e non temete per la notizia che si diffonde sulla terra; un anno correrà una notizia e l’anno dopo ne correrà un’altra. Violenza sarà nel paese, dominatore contro dominatore. | 46 And lest your hearts faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land : and a rumour shall come in one year, and after this year another rumour: and iniquity in the land, and ruler upon ruler. |
| 47 Per questo, ecco, giorni verranno nei quali visiterò gli idoli di Babilonia. Allora tutta la regione sarà confusa e tutti i suoi feriti giaceranno in mezzo a essa. | 47 Therefore behold the days come, and I will visit the idols of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her. |
| 48 Esulteranno su Babilonia il cielo e la terra e quanto è in essi, perchè da nord le verranno i devastatori. Oracolo di Jahve. | 48 And the heavens and the earth, and all things that are in them shall give praise for Babylon: for spoilers shall come to her from the north, saith the Lord. |
| 49 Anche Babilonia deve cadere per i feriti di Israele come per Babilonia caddero i feriti di tutta la terra, | 49 And as Babylon caused that there should fall slain in Israel: so of Babylon there shall fall slain in all the earth. |
| 50 Voi scampati dalla spada partite, non fermatevi, da lontano ricordatevi di Jahve e Gerusalemme vi ritorni nel cuore. | 50 You that have escaped the sword, come away, stand not still: remember the Lord afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind. |
| 51 « Siamo confusi perchè udimmo l'oltraggio; la vergogna è sulle nostre facce, perché stranieri entrarono nel santuario della casa di Jahve ». | 51 We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: because strangers are come upon the sanctuaries of the house of the Lord. |
| 52 « Perciò, ecco, giorni verranno — oracolo di Jahve — nei quali visiterò i suoi idoli e in tutta la terra gemeranno i feriti. | 52 Therefore behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will visit her graven things, and in all her land the wounded shall groan: |
| 53 Anche se Babilonia si innalza fino al cielo, anche se rende inaccessibile la sua fortezza, da me partiranno i suoi devastatori ». Oracolo di Jahve. | 53 If Babylon should mount up to heaven, and establish her strength on high: from me there should come spoilers upon her, saith the Lord. |
| 54 Senti: un grido si ode da Babilonia una rovina immensa dalla terra dei Caldei. | 54 The noise of a cry from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans : |
| 55 È Jahve che devasta Babilonia e fa tacere in essa il grande rumore. Le sue onde mugghiano come acque possenti, risuona il frastuono della loro voce; | 55 Because the Lord hath laid Babylon waste, and destroyed out of her the great voice: and their wave shall roar like many waters: their voice hath made a noise: |
| 56 perchè piomba su Babilonia il devastatore, sono catturati i suoi prodi, si sono infranti i loro archi, poichè Dio della retribuzione è Jahve, egli non manca di retribuire. | 56 Because the spoiler is come upon her, that is, upon Babylon, and her valiant men are taken, and their bow is weakened, because the Lord, who is a strong revenger, will surely repay. |
| 57 « Io inebrierò i suoi capi e i suoi saggi, i suoi governatori, i suoi magistrati e i suoi prodi; essi dormiranno un sonno eterno, non si sveglieranno ». Oracolo del re, il cui nome è Jahve degli eserciti. | 57 And I will make her princes drunk. and her wise men, and her captains, and her rulers, and her valiant men: and they shall sleep an everlasting sleep, and shall awake no more, saith the whose name is Lord of hosts. |
| 58 Così dice Jahve degli eserciti: « Il largo muro di Babilonia sarà raso al suolo, le sue porte eccelse saranno date alle fiamme. Pertanto si affaticano invano i popoli, le nazioni a causa del fuoco si stancano». | 58 Thus saith the Lord of hosts: That broad wall of Babylon shall be utterly broken down, and her high gates shall be burnt with fire, and the labours of the people shall come to nothing, and of the nations shall go to the fire, and shall perish. |
| 59 L’ordine che il profeta Geremia affidò a Seraia figlio di Neria, figlio di Makhsia, quando Sedecia, re di Giuda, andò in Babilonia nell’anno quarto del suo regno. Seraia era capo degli alloggi. | 59 The word that Jeremias the prophet commanded Saraias the son of Nerias, the son of Maasias, when he went with king Sedecias to Babylon, in the fourth year of his reign: now Saraias was chief over the prophecy. |
| 60 Geremia scrisse in un foglio tutta la sventura che doveva piombare su Babilonia e | 60 And Jeremias wrote in one book all the evil that was to come upon Babylon: all these words that are written against Babylon. |
| 61 disse a Seraia: « Quando andrai a Babilonia, pensa leggere tutte queste parole | 61 And Jeremias said to Saraias: When thou shalt come into Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words, |
| 62 e di’: “ Jahve, tu hai manifestato di voler distruggere questo luogo così che non ci sia più chi lo abiti, nè uomo nè bestia, ma rimanga piuttosto una desolazione eterna”. | 62 Thou shalt say: O Lord, thou hast spoken against this place to destroy it: so that there should be neither man nor beast to dwell therein, and that it should be desolate for ever. |
| 63 Ora, quando avrai finito di leggere questo foglio, vi legherai una pietra e lo getterai in mezzo all’Eufrate | 63 And when thou shalt have made an end of reading this book, thou shalt tie a stone to it, and shalt throw it into the midst of the Euphrates: |
| 64 dicendo: “ Così affonderà Babilonia e non risorgerà più dalla sventura che io le farò piombare addosso” ». Fin qui le parole di Geremia. | 64 And thou shalt say: Thus shall Babylon sink, and she shall not rise up from the affliction that I will bring upon her, and she shall be utterly destroyed. Thus far are the words of Jeremias. |
