Jesus Sirach 40

1 Große Mühsal hat Gott den Menschen zugeteilt, ein schweres Joch ihnen auferlegt von dem Tag, an dem sie aus dem Schoß ihrer Mutter hervorgehen, bis zum Tag ihrer Rückkehr zur Mutter aller Lebenden:	1 Much labor was created for every man, and a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day they come forth from their mother's womb till the day they return to the mother of all.
2 ihr Grübeln und die Angst ihres Herzens, der Gedanke an die Zukunft, an den Tag ihres Todes.	2 Their perplexities and fear of heart-- their anxious thought is the day of death,
3 Von dem, der auf hohem Thron sitzt, bis zu dem, der in Staub und Asche sitzt,	3 from the man who sits on a splendid throne to the one who is humbled in dust and ashes,
4 von dem, der Krone und Stirnreif trägt, bis zu dem, der ein Kleid aus Fellen trägt:	4 from the man who wears purple and a crown to the one who is clothed in burlap;
5 Zorn, Eifersucht, Sorge und Schrecken, Todesangst, Zank und Streit. Noch auf dem Bett zur Ruhezeit verwirrt der nächtliche Schlaf ihm den Sinn.	5 there is anger and envy and trouble and unrest, and fear of death, and fury and strife. And when one rests upon his bed, his sleep at night confuses his mind.
6 Bald wird er, nach einem Augenblick der Ruhe, von schrecklichen Träumen aufgejagt, bald in die Irre getrieben durch Vorspiegelungen seiner Seele, wie ein Flüchtling, der dem Verfolger entrinnt;	6 He gets little or no rest, and afterward in his sleep, as though he were on watch, he is troubled by the visions of his mind like one who has escaped from the battle-front;
7 gerade während er sich rettet, wacht er auf und wundert sich über die Angst um nichts.	7 at the moment of his rescue he wakes up, and wonders that his fear came to nothing.
8 Hinzu kommt über alles Lebende, vom Menschen bis zum Vieh, und über die Sünder siebenfach:	8 With all flesh, both man and beast, and upon sinners seven times more,
9 Pest und Blut, Fieber und Schwert, Untergang und Verderben, Hunger und Tod.	9 are death and bloodshed and strife and sword, calamities, famine and affliction and plague.
10 Für den Frevler ist das Übel erschaffen und seinetwegen kommt die Vernichtung.	10 All these were created for the wicked, and on their account the flood came.
11 Alles, was von der Erde stammt, kehrt zur Erde zurück, was aus der Höhe stammt, zur Höhe.	11 All things that are from the earth turn back to the earth, and what is from the waters returns to the sea.
12 Jede Bestechung und Ungerechtigkeit wird ausgerottet, Treue aber besteht für immer.	12 All bribery and injustice will be blotted out, but good faith will stand for ever.
13 Der Reichtum des Frevlers ist wie ein reißender Bach, wie ein mächtiger Fluss beim Gewitterregen.	13 The wealth of the unjust will dry up like a torrent, and crash like a loud clap of thunder in a rain.
14 Schwillt er an, dann werden Felsen bewegt, doch plötzlich versiegt er für immer.	14 A generous man will be made glad; likewise transgressors will utterly fail.
15 Der Schössling des Gewalttätigen treibt keinen Spross; denn die Wurzel des Ruchlosen liegt auf einem Felsenriff,	15 The children of the ungodly will not put forth many branches; they are unhealthy roots upon sheer rock.
16 wie Riedgras am Bachrand, das schneller als jedes Gras verdorrt.	16 The reeds by any water or river bank will be plucked up before any grass.
17 Liebe aber wird in Ewigkeit nicht ausgetilgt, Barmherzigkeit besteht für immer.	17 Kindness is like a garden of blessings, and almsgiving endures for ever.
18 Überfluss und Verdienst machen das Leben angenehm, doch mehr als beide, einen Schatz zu finden.	18 Life is sweet for the self-reliant and the worker, but he who finds treasure is better off than both.
19 Nachkommenschaft und Städtebau geben dem Namen Bestand, doch mehr als beide, Weisheit zu finden. Viehzucht und Ackerbau lassen den Leib gedeihen, doch mehr als beide eine treue Frau.	19 Children and the building of a city establish a man's name, but a blameless wife is accounted better than both.
20 Wein und Bier erfreuen das Herz, doch mehr als beide die Freundesliebe.	20 Wine and music gladden the heart, but the love of wisdom is better than both.
21 Flöte und Harfe verschönern das Lied, doch mehr als beide eine reine Stimme.	21 The flute and the harp make pleasant melody, but a pleasant voice is better than both.
22 Anmut und Schönheit entzücken das Auge, doch mehr als beide die Blumen des Feldes.	22 The eye desires grace and beauty, but the green shoots of grain more than both.
23 Freund und Gefährte leiten zur rechten Zeit, doch mehr als beide eine verständige Frau.	23 A friend or a companion never meets one amiss, but a wife with her husband is better than both.
24 Bruder und Helfer nützen in der Zeit der Not, doch mehr als beide eine rettende Liebesgabe.	24 Brothers and help are for a time of trouble, but almsgiving rescues better than both.
25 Gold und Silber stützen den Fuß, doch mehr als beide ein guter Rat.	25 Gold and silver make the foot stand sure, but good counsel is esteemed more than both.
26 Reichtum und Macht erheben das Herz, doch mehr als beide die Gottesfurcht. Hat man Gottesfurcht, so gibt es keine Not, neben ihr braucht man keine Stütze zu suchen;	26 Riches and strength lift up the heart, but the fear of the Lord is better than both. There is no loss in the fear of the Lord, and with it there is no need to seek for help.
27 die Gottesfurcht ist wie ein gesegnetes Paradies, über seine ganze Pracht (breitet sich) ihr schirmendes Dach.	27 The fear of the Lord is like a garden of blessing, and covers a man better than any glory.
28 Mein Sohn, lebe nicht vom Betteln! Besser sterben, als aufdringlich sein.	28 My son, do not lead the life of a beggar; it is better to die than to beg.
29 Wer nach dem Tisch anderer schauen muss, dessen Leben ist nicht als Leben zu rechnen. Geschenkte Leckerbissen beschmutzen die Kehle, dem verständigen Mann bereiten sie Magenschmerzen.	29 When a man looks to the table of another, his existence cannot be considered as life. He pollutes himself with another man's food, but a man who is intelligent and well instructed guards against that.
30 Im Mund des Frechen ist Betteln süß, doch in seinem Innern brennt es wie Feuer.	30 In the mouth of the shameless begging is sweet, but in his stomach a fire is kindled.
