NOVA VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
But at daybreak on the first day of the week they took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
Et invenerunt lapidem revolutum a monumento;2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb;
etingressae non invenerunt corpus Domini Iesu.3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
Et factum est, dum mentehaesitarent de isto, ecce duo viri steterunt secus illas in veste fulgenti.4 While they were puzzling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them.
Cum timerent autem et declinarent vultum in terram, dixerunt ad illas: “ Quidquaeritis viventem cum mortuis?5 They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to them, "Why do you seek the living one among the dead?
Non est hic, sed surrexit. Recordaminiqualiter locutus est vobis, cum adhuc in Galilaea esset,6 He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember what he said to you while he was still in Galilee,
dicens: “OportetFilium hominis tradi in manus hominum peccatorum et crucifigi et die tertiaresurgere” ”.7 that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day."
Et recordatae sunt verborum eius8 And they remembered his words.
et regressae a monumentonuntiaverunt haec omnia illis Undecim et ceteris omnibus.9 Then they returned from the tomb and announced all these things to the eleven and to all the others.
Erat autem MariaMagdalene et Ioanna et Maria Iacobi; et ceterae cum eis dicebant ad apostoloshaec.10 The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; the others who accompanied them also told this to the apostles,
Et visa sunt ante illos sicut deliramentum verba ista, et non credebantillis.11 but their story seemed like nonsense and they did not believe them.
But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, bent down, and saw the burial cloths alone; then he went home amazed at what had happened.
Et ecce duo ex illis ibant ipsa die in castellum, quod erat in spatiostadiorum sexaginta ab Ierusalem nomine Emmaus;13 Now that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
et ipsi loquebantur adinvicem de his omnibus, quae acciderant.14 and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
Et factum est, dum fabularentur etsecum quaererent, et ipse Iesus appropinquans ibat cum illis;15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
oculi autemillorum tenebantur, ne eum agnoscerent.16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
”. Et steterunt tristes.17 He asked them, "What are you discussing as you walk along?" They stopped, looking downcast.
”.18 One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?"
Quibusille dixit: “ Quae? ”. Et illi dixerunt ei: “ De Iesu Nazareno, qui fuitvir propheta, potens in opere et sermone coram Deo et omni populo;19 And he replied to them, "What sort of things?" They said to him, "The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
et quomodoeum tradiderunt summi sacerdotes et principes nostri in damnationem mortis etcrucifixerunt eum.20 how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning
et, non invento corpore eius, venerunt dicentes se etiam visionemangelorum vidisse, qui dicunt eum vivere.23 and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see."
And he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Nonne haec oportuit pati Christum et intrare ingloriam suam? ”.26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?"
Et incipiens a Moyse et omnibus Prophetis interpretabaturillis in omnibus Scripturis, quae de ipso erant.27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.
Et appropinquaveruntcastello, quo ibant, et ipse se finxit longius ire.28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
Et intravit, ut maneret cum illis.29 But they urged him, "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
Et factum est, dum recumberet cumillis, accepit panem et benedixit ac fregit et porrigebat illis.30 And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.
Et apertisunt oculi eorum, et cognoverunt eum; et ipse evanuit ab eis.31 With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.
Et dixerunt adinvicem: “ Nonne cor nostrum ardens erat in nobis, dum loqueretur nobis in viaet aperiret nobis Scripturas? ”.32 Then they said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?"
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them
dicentes: “ Surrexit Dominus vere et apparuit Simoni ”.34 who were saying, "The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!"
Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
”.36 While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you."
Conturbati vero et conterriti existimabant se spiritum videre.37 But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.
Et dixit eis: “ Quid turbati estis, et quare cogitationes ascendunt in cordavestra?38 Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?
Videte manus meas et pedes meos, quia ipse ego sum! Palpate me etvidete, quia spiritus carnem et ossa non habet, sicut me videtis habere ”.39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have."
Et cum hoc dixisset, ostendit eis manus et pedes.40 And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
Adhuc autem illis noncredentibus prae gaudio et mirantibus, dixit eis: “ Habetis hic aliquid, quodmanducetur? ”.41 While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
At illi obtulerunt ei partem piscis assi.42 They gave him a piece of baked fish;
Et sumens,coram eis manducavit.
he took it and ate it in front of them.
He said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled."
Tunc aperuit illis sensum, utintellegerent Scripturas.45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.
Et dixit eis: “ Sic scriptum est, Christum patiet resurgere a mortuis die tertia,46 And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day
et praedicari in nomine eius paenitentiamin remissionem peccatorum in omnes gentes, incipientibus ab Ierusalem.47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Vosestis testes horum.48 You are witnesses of these things.
Et ecce ego mitto promissum Patris mei in vos; vos autemsedete in civitate, quoadusque induamini virtutem ex alto ”.
And (behold) I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
Eduxit autem eos foras usque in Bethaniam et, elevatis manibus suis, benedixit eis.50 Then he led them (out) as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them.
Et factum est, dum benediceret illis, recessit ab eis etferebatur in caelum.51 As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.
Et ipsi adoraverunt eum et regressi sunt in Ierusalemcum gaudio magno52 They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
et erant semper in templo benedicentes Deum.
and they were continually in the temple praising God.
