1 Appropinquabat autem dies festus Azymorum, qui dici tur Pascha.	1 The feast of Unleavened Bread, cal ed the Passover, was now drawing near,
2 Etquaerebant principes sacerdotum et scribae quomodo eum interficerent; timebantvero plebem.	2 and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way of doing away with him, because theywere afraid of the people.
3 Intravit autem Satanas in Iudam, qui cognominabatur Iscarioth,unum de Duodecim;	3 Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve.
4 et abiit et locutus est cum principibus sacerdotum etmagistratibus, quemadmodum illum traderet eis.	4 He approached the chief priests and the officers of the guard to discuss some way of handing Jesusover to them.
5 Et gavisi sunt et pacti suntpecuniam illi dare.	5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.
6 Et spopondit et quaerebat opportunitatem, ut eis traderetillum sine turba.	6 He accepted and began to look for an opportunity to betray him to them without people knowing aboutit.
7 Venit autem dies Azymorum, in qua necesse erat occidi Pascha.	7 The day of Unleavened Bread came round, on which the Passover had to be sacrificed,
8 Et misitPetrum et Ioannem dicens: “ Euntes parate nobis Pascha, ut manducemus ”.	8 and he sent Peter and John, saying, 'Go and make the preparations for us to eat the Passover.'
9 At illi dixerunt ei: “Ubi vis paremus? ”.	9 They asked him, 'Where do you want us to prepare it?'
10 Et dixit ad eos: “ Ecce,introeuntibus vobis in civitatem, occurret vobis homo amphoram aquae portans;sequimini eum in domum, in quam intrat.	10 He said to them, 'Look, as you go into the city you wil meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Fol owhim into the house he enters
11 Et dicetis patri familias domus: “Dicittibi Magister: Ubi est deversorium, ubi Pascha cum discipulis meis manducem?”.	11 and tel the owner of the house, "The Master says this to you: Where is the room for me to eat thePassover with my disciples?"
12 Ipse vobis ostendet cenaculum magnum stratum; ibi parate ”.	12 The man wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches. Make the preparations there.'
13 Euntes auteminvenerunt, sicut dixit illis, et paraverunt Pascha.	13 They set off and found everything as he had told them and prepared the Passover.
14 Et cum facta esset hora, discubuit, et apostoli cum eo.	14 When the time came he took his place at table, and the apostles with him.
15 Et ait illis: “Desiderio desideravi hoc Pascha manducare vobiscum, antequam patiar.	15 And he said to them, 'I have ardently longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
16 Dicoenim vobis: Non manducabo illud, donec impleatur in regno Dei ”.	16 because, I tel you, I shal not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.'
17 Et acceptocalice, gratias egit et dixit: “ Accipite hoc et dividite inter vos.	17 Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, 'Take this and share it among you,
18 Dicoenim vobis: Non bibam amodo de generatione vitis, donec regnum Dei veniat ”.	18 because from now on, I tel you, I shall never again drink wine until the kingdom of God comes.'
19 Et accepto pane, gratias egit et fregit et dedit eis dicens: “ Hoc estcorpus meum, quod pro vobis datur. Hoc facite in meam commemorationem ”.	19 Then he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This ismy body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.'
20 Similiter et calicem, postquam cenavit, dicens: “ Hic calix novum testamentumest in sanguine meo, qui pro vobis funditur.	20 He did the same with the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my bloodpoured out for you.
21 Verumtamen ecce manus tradentis me mecum est in mensa;	21 'But look, here with me on the table is the hand of the man who is betraying me.
22 et quidem Filiushominis, secundum quod definitum est, vadit; verumtamen vae illi homini, perquem traditur! ”.	22 The Son of man is indeed on the path which was decreed, but alas for that man by whom he isbetrayed!'
23 Et ipsi coeperunt quaerere inter se, quis esset ex eis,qui hoc facturus esset.	23 And they began to ask one another which of them it could be who was to do this.
24 Facta est autem et contentio inter eos, quis eorum videretur esse maior.	24 An argument also began between them about who should be reckoned the greatest;
25 Dixit autem eis: “ Reges gentium dominantur eorum; et, qui potestatem habentsuper eos, benefici vocantur.	25 but he said to them, 'Among the gentiles it is the kings who lord it over them, and those who haveauthority over them are given the title Benefactor.
26 Vos autem non sic, sed qui maior est in vobis,fiat sicut iunior; et, qui praecessor est, sicut ministrator.	26 With you this must not happen. No; the greatest among you must behave as if he were the youngest,the leader as if he were the one who serves.
27 Nam quis maiorest: qui recumbit, an qui ministrat? Nonne qui recumbit? Ego autem in mediovestrum sum, sicut qui ministrat.	27 For who is the greater: the one at table or the one who serves? The one at table, surely? Yet here amI among you as one who serves!
28 Vos autem estis, qui permansistis mecum in tentationibus meis;	28 'You are the men who have stood by me faithful y in my trials;
29 et egodispono vobis, sicut disposuit mihi Pater meus regnum,	29 and now I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me:
30 ut edatis et bibatissuper mensam meam in regno meo et sedeatis super thronos iudicantes duodecimtribus Israel.	30 you wil eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you wil sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribesof Israel.
31 Simon, Simon, ecce Satanas expetivit vos, ut cribraret sicut triticum;	31 'Simon, Simon! Look, Satan has got his wish to sift you al like wheat;
32 egoautem rogavi pro te, ut non deficiat fides tua. Et tu, aliquando conversus,confirma fratres tuos ”.	32 but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail, and once you have recovered, you inyour turn must strengthen your brothers.'
33 Qui dixit ei: “ Domine, tecum paratus sum et incarcerem et in mortem ire ”.	33 'Lord,' he answered, 'I would be ready to go to prison with you, and to death.'
34 Et ille dixit: “ Dico tibi, Petre, noncantabit hodie gallus, donec ter abneges nosse me ”.	34 Jesus replied, 'I tell you, Peter, by the time the cock crows today you wil have denied three times thatyou know me.'
35 Et dixit eis: “ Quando misi vos sine sacculo et pera et calceamentis,numquid aliquid defuit vobis? ”. At illi dixerunt: “ Nihil ”.	35 He said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse or haversack or sandals, were you short ofanything?'
36 Dixitergo eis: “ Sed nunc, qui habet sacculum, tollat, similiter et peram; et, quinon habet, vendat tunicam suam et emat gladium.	36 'No, nothing,' they said. He said to them, 'But now if you have a purse, take it, and the same with ahaversack; if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one,
37 Dico enim vobis: Hoc, quodscriptum est, oportet impleri in me, illud: “Cum iniustis deputatus est”.Etenim ea, quae sunt de me, adimpletionem habent ”.	37 because I tell you these words of scripture are destined to be fulfil ed in me: He was counted as oneof the rebel ious. Yes, what it says about me is even now reaching its fulfilment.'
38 At illi dixerunt: “Domine, ecce gladii duo hic ”. At ille dixit eis: “ Satis est ”.	38 They said, 'Lord, here are two swords.' He said to them, 'That is enough!'
39 Et egressus ibat secundum consuetudinem in montem Olivarum; secuti sunt autemillum et discipuli.	39 He then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples fol owing.
40 Et cum pervenisset ad locum, dixit illis: “ Orate, neintretis in tentationem ”.	40 When he reached the place he said to them, 'Pray not to be put to the test.'
41 Et ipse avulsus est ab eis, quantum iactus estlapidis, et, positis genibus, orabat	41 Then he withdrew from them, about a stone's throw away, and knelt down and prayed.
42 dicens: “ Pater, si vis, transfercalicem istum a me; verumtamen non mea voluntas sed tua fiat ”.	42 'Father,' he said, 'if you are wil ing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done,not mine.'
43 Apparuitautem illi angelus de caelo confortans eum. Et factus in agonia prolixiusorabat.	43 Then an angel appeared to him, coming from heaven to give him strength.
44 Et factus est sudor eius sicut guttae sanguinis decurrentis interram.	44 In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops ofblood.
45 Et cum surrexisset ab oratione et venisset ad discipulos, invenit eosdormientes prae tristitia	45 When he rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief.
46 et ait illis: “ Quid dormitis? Surgite; orate, neintretis in tentationem ”.	46 And he said to them, 'Why are you asleep? Get up and pray not to be put to the test.'
47 Adhuc eo loquente, ecce turba; et, qui vocabatur Iudas, unus de Duodecim,antecedebat eos et appropinquavit Iesu, ut oscularetur eum.	47 Suddenly, while he was still speaking, a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the mancal ed Judas, one of the Twelve, who went up to Jesus to kiss him.
48 Iesus autem dixitei: “ Iuda, osculo Filium hominis tradis? ”.	48 Jesus said, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of man with a kiss?'
49 Videntes autem hi, qui circaipsum erant, quod futurum erat, dixerunt: “ Domine, si percutimus in gladio?”.	49 His followers, seeing what was about to happen, said, 'Lord, shal we use our swords?'
50 Et percussit unus ex illis servum principis sacerdotum et amputavitauriculam eius dextram.	50 And one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear.
51 Respondens autem Iesus ait: “ Sinite usque huc! ”.Et cum tetigisset auriculam eius, sanavit eum.	51 But at this Jesus said, 'That is enough.' And touching the man's ear he healed him.
52 Dixit autem Iesus ad eos, quivenerant ad se principes sacerdotum et magistratus templi et seniores: “ Quasiad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibus?	52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the Temple guard and elders who had come forhim, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out with swords and clubs?
53 Cum cotidie vobiscum fuerim intemplo, non extendistis manus in me; sed haec est hora vestra et potestastenebrarum ”.	53 When I was among you in the Temple day after day you never made a move to lay hands on me. Butthis is your hour; this is the reign of darkness.'
54 Comprehendentes autem eum, duxerunt et introduxerunt in domum principissacerdotum. Petrus vero sequebatur a longe.	54 They seized him then and led him away, and they took him to the high priest's house. Peter fol owedat a distance.
55 Accenso autem igni in medio atrioet circumsedentibus illis, sedebat Petrus in medio eorum.	55 They had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and Peter sat down among them,
56 Quem cum vidissetancilla quaedam sedentem ad lumen et eum fuisset intuita, dixit:	56 and as he was sitting there by the blaze a servant-girl saw him, peered at him, and said, 'This manwas with him too.'
57 “ Et hiccum illo erat! ”. At ille negavit eum dicens:	57 But he denied it. 'Woman, I do not know him,' he said.
58 “ Mulier, non novi illum!”. Et post pusillum alius videns eum dixit: “ Et tu de illis es! ”. Petrusvero ait: “ O homo, non sum! ”.	58 Shortly afterwards someone else saw him and said, 'You are one of them too.' But Peter replied, 'I amnot, my friend.'
59 Et intervallo facto quasi horae unius,alius quidam affirmabat dicens: “ Vere et hic cum illo erat, nam et Galilaeusest! ”.	59 About an hour later another man insisted, saying, 'This fel ow was certainly with him. Why, he is aGalilean.'
60 Et ait Petrus: “ Homo, nescio quid dicis! ”. Et continuo adhucillo loquente cantavit gallus.	60 Peter said, 'My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.' At that instant, while he was stilspeaking, the cock crowed,
61 Et conversus Dominus respexit Petrum; etrecordatus est Petrus verbi Domini, sicut dixit ei: “ Priusquam gallus cantethodie, ter me negabis ”.	61 and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered the Lord's words when hehad said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will have disowned me three times.'
62 Et egressus foras flevit amare.	62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63 Et viri, qui tenebant illum, illudebant ei caedentes;	63 Meanwhile the men who guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him.
64 et velaverunt eum etinterrogabant eum dicentes: “ Prophetiza: Quis est, qui te percussit? ”.	64 They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying, 'Prophesy! Who hit you then?'
65 Et alia multa blasphemantes dicebant in eum.	65 And they heaped many other insults on him.
66 Et ut factus est dies, convenerunt seniores plebis et principes sacerdotum etscribae et duxerunt illum in concilium suum	66 When day broke there was a meeting of the elders of the people, the chief priests and scribes. Hewas brought before their council,
67 dicentes: “ Si tu es Christus,dic nobis ”. Et ait illis: “ Si vobis dixero, non credetis;	67 and they said to him, 'If you are the Christ, tel us.' He replied, 'If I tel you, you wil not believe,
68 si auteminterrogavero, non respondebitis mihi.	68 and if I question you, you will not answer.
69 Ex hoc autem erit Filius hominis sedens a dextris virtutis Dei ”.	69 But from now on, the Son of man wil be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.'
70 Dixerunt autem omnes: “ Tu ergo es Filius Dei? ”. Qui ait ad illos: “ Vosdicitis quia ego sum ”.	70 They all said, 'So you are the Son of God then?' He answered, 'It is you who say I am.'
71 At illi dixerunt: “ Quid adhuc desideramustestimonium? Ipsi enim audivimus de ore eius! ”.	71 Then they said, 'Why do we need any evidence? We have heard it for ourselves from his own lips.'
