1 Dopo Abimelech fu capo d'Israele Thola, figliuolo di Phua zio di Abimelech, il quale era della tribù d'Issachar, e abitava in Samir sul monte Ephraim:	1 After Abimelech, a leader rose up in Israel, Tola, the son of Puah, the paternal uncle of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, who lived in Shamir on mount Ephraim.
2 E governò Israele ventitré anni, e morì e fu sepolto in Samir.	2 And he judged Israel for twenty-three years, and he died and was buried at Shamir.
3 Ed ebbe per successore Jair di Galaad il quale fu giudice d'Israele per ventidue anni.	3 After him succeeded Jair, a Gileadite, who judged Israel for twenty-two years,
4 Ed egli avea trenta figliuoli che cavalcavano trenta asini giovani, ed eran principi di trenta città nel paese di Galaad, le quali dal nome di lui ebber nome Havoth-Jair, vale a dire città di Jair, fino al di d'oggi.	4 having thirty sons sitting upon thirty young donkeys, and who were leaders of thirty cities, which from his name were called Havvoth Jair, that is, the towns of Jair, even to the present day, in the land of Gilead.
5 E morì Jair, e fu sepolto nel luogo detto Camon.	5 And Jair died, and he was buried in the place which is called Kamon.
6 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele aggiungendo a' vecchi de' nuovi peccati, fecero il male nel cospetto del Signore; e servirono agl’idoli, a Baal, e ad Astaroth, e agli dei della Siria, e di Sidone, e di Moab e dei figliuoli di Ammon, e de' Filistei, e abbandonarono il Signore e non l'onorarono.	6 But the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, joining new sins to old, and they served idols, the Baals and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria and Sidon, and of Moab and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines. And they abandoned the Lord, and they did not worship him.
7 Onde irato con essi il Signore li diede in potere de' Filistei, e dei figliuoli di Ammon.	7 And the Lord, becoming angry against them, delivered them into the hands of the Philistines and the sons of Ammon.
8 E furono vessati e oppressi crudelmente per diciotto anni tutti quelli che abitano di là dal Giordano nel paese degli Amorrhei che è in Galaad:	8 And they were afflicted and vehemently oppressed for eighteen years, all who were living beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorite, which is in Gilead,
9 Di maniera che i figliuoli di Ammon passato il Giordano desolavano la Giudea, e Beniamin, ed Ephraim: e Israele fu abbattuto formisura.	9 to such a great extent that the sons of Ammon, crossing over the Jordan, laid waste to Judah and Benjamin and Ephraim. And Israel was exceedingly afflicted.
10 E alzando le strida al Signore dissero: Abbiam peccato contro di te, perchè abbiamo abbandonato il Signore Dio nostro, e servito a Baal.	10 And crying out to the Lord, they said: “We have sinned against you. For we have forsaken the Lord our God, and we have served the Baals.”
11 E il Signore disse loro: Non è egli vero che gli Egiziani, e gli Amorrhei, e i figliuoli di Ammon, e i Filistei,	11 And the Lord said to them: “Did not the Egyptians, and the Amorites, and the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines,
12 E anche i Sidonii e Amalech, e Canaan vi straziarono, e alzaste la voce a me, e io vi liberai dalle mani loro?	12 and also the Sidonians, and Amalek, and Canaan, oppress you, and so you cried out to me, and I rescued you from their hand?
13 E con tutto questo mi abbandonaste, e rendeste onore agli dei stranieri: per questo io più non vi libererò.	13 And yet you have forsaken me, and you have worshipped foreign gods. For this reason, I will not continue to free you any more.
14 Andate ad invocare gli dei che avete eletti: essi vi liberino nel tempo di afflizione.	14 Go, and call upon the gods whom you have chosen. Let them free you in the time of anguish.”
15 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele dissero al Signore: Abbiam peccato; fa di noi quello che ti piace: per questa volta sola liberaci.	15 And the sons of Israel said to the Lord: “We have sinned. You may repay us in whatever way pleases you. Yet free us now.”
16 E avendo dette queste cose gittaron fuora de' loro confini tutti i simulacri degli dei stranieri, e servirono al Signore Dio, il quale ebbe compassione delle loro miserie.	16 And saying these things, they cast out all the idols of the foreign gods from their regions, and they served the Lord God. And he was touched by their miseries.
17 Intanto i figliuoli di Ammon con alte grida piantaron le tende in Galaad: contro de' quali adunatisi i figliuoli d'Israele, posero il campo in Maspha.	17 And then the sons of Ammon, shouting out together, pitched their tents in Gilead. And the sons of Israel gathered together against them, and they made camp at Mizpah.
18 E i principi di Galaad si dissero l’uno all’altro: Quegli di noi che sarà il primo ad attaccare la mischia co' figliuoli di Ammon, sarà condottiere del popolo di Galaad.	18 And the leaders of Gilead said to one another, “Whoever among us will be the first to begin to contend against the sons of Ammon, he shall be the leader of the people of Gilead.”
