1 Dopo Abimelech fu capo d'Israele Thola, figliuolo di Phua zio di Abimelech, il quale era della tribù d'Issachar, e abitava in Samir sul monte Ephraim:	1 After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo, rose to deliver Israel. He belonged to Issachar andlived at Shamir in the mountain country of Ephraim.
2 E governò Israele ventitré anni, e morì e fu sepolto in Samir.	2 He was judge in Israel for twenty-three years; he then died and was buried at Shamir.
3 Ed ebbe per successore Jair di Galaad il quale fu giudice d'Israele per ventidue anni.	3 After him rose Jair of Gilead, who judged Israel for twenty-two years.
4 Ed egli avea trenta figliuoli che cavalcavano trenta asini giovani, ed eran principi di trenta città nel paese di Galaad, le quali dal nome di lui ebber nome Havoth-Jair, vale a dire città di Jair, fino al di d'oggi.	4 He had thirty sons who rode on thirty young donkeys and who owned thirty towns, stil known today asthe Encampments of Jair, in the territory of Gilead.
5 E morì Jair, e fu sepolto nel luogo detto Camon.	5 Jair then died and was buried at Kamon.
6 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele aggiungendo a' vecchi de' nuovi peccati, fecero il male nel cospetto del Signore; e servirono agl’idoli, a Baal, e ad Astaroth, e agli dei della Siria, e di Sidone, e di Moab e dei figliuoli di Ammon, e de' Filistei, e abbandonarono il Signore e non l'onorarono.	6 The Israelites again began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They served Baal and Astarte, and thegods of Aram and Sidon, the gods of Moab and those of the Ammonites and Philistines. They deserted Yahwehand served him no more.
7 Onde irato con essi il Signore li diede in potere de' Filistei, e dei figliuoli di Ammon.	7 Yahweh's anger then grew hot against Israel and he gave them over into the power of the Philistinesand the power of the Ammonites,
8 E furono vessati e oppressi crudelmente per diciotto anni tutti quelli che abitano di là dal Giordano nel paese degli Amorrhei che è in Galaad:	8 who from that year onwards crushed and oppressed the Israelites for eighteen years -- all thoseIsraelites living on the other side of the Jordan in Amorite territory, in Gilead.
9 Di maniera che i figliuoli di Ammon passato il Giordano desolavano la Giudea, e Beniamin, ed Ephraim: e Israele fu abbattuto formisura.	9 Furthermore, the Ammonites would cross the Jordan and also make war on Judah, Benjamin and theHouse of Ephraim, so that Israel was in distress.
10 E alzando le strida al Signore dissero: Abbiam peccato contro di te, perchè abbiamo abbandonato il Signore Dio nostro, e servito a Baal.	10 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and said, 'We have sinned against you, because we have turnedfrom Yahweh our God to serve Baals.'
11 E il Signore disse loro: Non è egli vero che gli Egiziani, e gli Amorrhei, e i figliuoli di Ammon, e i Filistei,	11 And Yahweh said to the Israelites, 'When Egyptians and Amorites, Ammonites and Philistines,
12 E anche i Sidonii e Amalech, e Canaan vi straziarono, e alzaste la voce a me, e io vi liberai dalle mani loro?	12 when the Sidonians, Amalek and Midian oppressed you and you cried to me, did I not rescue youfrom their power?
13 E con tutto questo mi abbandonaste, e rendeste onore agli dei stranieri: per questo io più non vi libererò.	13 But it is you who have forsaken me and served other gods; and so I shall rescue you no more.
14 Andate ad invocare gli dei che avete eletti: essi vi liberino nel tempo di afflizione.	14 Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen. Let them rescue you in your time of trouble.'
15 Ma i figliuoli d'Israele dissero al Signore: Abbiam peccato; fa di noi quello che ti piace: per questa volta sola liberaci.	15 The Israelites replied to Yahweh, 'We have sinned. Treat us as you see fit, but please rescue ustoday.'
16 E avendo dette queste cose gittaron fuora de' loro confini tutti i simulacri degli dei stranieri, e servirono al Signore Dio, il quale ebbe compassione delle loro miserie.	16 They got rid of their foreign gods and served Yahweh, who could bear Israel's suffering no longer.
17 Intanto i figliuoli di Ammon con alte grida piantaron le tende in Galaad: contro de' quali adunatisi i figliuoli d'Israele, posero il campo in Maspha.	17 The Ammonites gathered and pitched camp in Gilead. The Israelites ral ied and pitched camp atMizpah.
18 E i principi di Galaad si dissero l’uno all’altro: Quegli di noi che sarà il primo ad attaccare la mischia co' figliuoli di Ammon, sarà condottiere del popolo di Galaad.	18 The people, the chieftains of Gilead, then said to one another, 'Who wil volunteer to attack theAmmonites? He shall be chief of al who live in Gilead!'
