1 E passando vide un uomo cieco dalla nascita.	1 And Jesus, while passing by, saw a man blind from birth.
2 Ed i suoi discepoli gli domandarono: Maestro, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, per nascere cieco?	2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?”
3 Rispose Gesù: Nè lui nè i suoi genitori han peccato, ma è così perchè in lui si manifestino lo opero di Dio.	3 Jesus responded: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God would be made manifest in him.
4 Bisogna che io compia l'opere di chi mi ha mandato finché è giorno; poi vien la notte, quando nessuno può operare.	4 I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day: the night is coming, when no one is able to work.
5 Finché son nel mondo son la luce del mondo.	5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 Ciò detto, sputò in terra, fe' colla saliva del fango, ne spalmò gli occhi del cieco, dicendogli:	6 When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and he made clay from the spittle, and he smeared the clay over his eyes.
7 Va', lavati nella vasca di Siloe, che significa Messo. Andò colui a lavarsi e tornò che ci vedeva.	7 And he said to him: “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated as: one who has been sent). Therefore, he went away and washed, and he returned, seeing.
8 I vicini e quelli che l'avevan veduto prima a mendicare, dicevano: Non è quello che sedeva a chiedere l'elemosina? Altri dicevano: E' lui.	8 And so the bystanders and those who had seen him before, when he was a beggar, said, “Is this not the one who was sitting and begging?” Some said, “This is he.”
9 Altri: No, ma uno che gli somiglia. Ma egli diceva: Sono io: proprio quello.	9 But others said, “Certainly not, but he is similar to him.” Yet truly, he himself said, “I am he.”
10 Gli dicevano: Come mai ti sono aperti gli occhi?	10 Therefore, they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
11 Rispose: Quell'uomo che si chiama Gesù, fece del fango, me ne spalmò gli occhi e mi disse: Va' alla vasca di Siloe e lavati. Ci sono andato; mi sono lavato e ci vedo.	11 He responded: “That man who is called Jesus made clay, and he anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ And I went, and I washed, and I see.”
12 Gli domandarono: Dov'è costui? Rispose: Non lo so.	12 And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”
13 Menarono colui che era stato cieco dai Farisei.	13 They brought the one who had been blind to the Pharisees.
14 Ed era di sabato, quando Gesù fece quel fango e gli aprì gli occhi.	14 Now it was the Sabbath, when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
15 Allora i Farisei lo interrogarono di nuovo in qual modo avesse ottenuta la vista. Ed egli rispose loro: Mi ha posto del fango sugli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo.	15 Therefore, again the Pharisees questioned him as to how he had seen. And he said to them, “He placed clay over my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”
16 Però alcuni dei Farisei dicevano: Non è da Dio quest'uomo, che non osserva il sabato. Altri dicevano: Come può un uomo peccatore far tali prodigi? E tra loro v'era disaccordo.	16 And so certain Pharisees said: “This man, who does not keep the Sabbath, is not from God.” But others said, “How could a sinful man accomplish these signs?” And there was a schism among them.
17 Dicon pertanto un'altra volta al cieco: E tu che dici di colui che t'ha aperto gli occhi? Egli rispose: E' un profeta.	17 Therefore, they spoke again to the blind man, “What do you say about him who opened your eyes?” Then he said, “He is a Prophet.”
18 E i Giudei però non credettero che prima fosse stato cieco e che avesse riacquistato la vista, fino a tanto che non ebbero chiamati i genitori di quello che ora ci vedeva,	18 Therefore, the Jews did not believe, about him, that he had been blind and had seen, until they called the parents of him who had seen.
19 e li interrogarono dicendo: E' questo il vostro figlio che voi dite nato cieco? Come mai ora ci vede?	19 And they questioned them, saying: “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how is it that he now sees?”
20 Risposero i genitori di lui: Sappiamo che questo è nostro figlio e che è nato cieco;	20 His parents responded to them and said: “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
21 come poi ora ci veda non lo sappiamo, e neppure sappiamo chi gli abbia aperto gli occhi; domandatene a lui; ha i suoi anni: parli lui di quello che lo riguarda.	21 But how it is that he now sees, we do not know. And who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough. Let him speak for himself.”
22 Così dissero i suoi genitori, perchè avevano paura dei Giudei, i quali avevan già stabilito che se uno riconoscesse Gesù come Cristo, fosse espulso dalla sinagoga.	22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already conspired, so that if anyone were to confess him to be the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue.
23 Per questo i suoi genitori dissero: Ha i suoi anni: domandatene a lui.	23 It was for this reason that his parents said: “He is old enough. Ask him.”
24 Chiamaron quindi di bel nuovo l'uomo che era stato cieco e gli dissero: Da' gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quest'uomo è peccatore.	24 Therefore, they again called the man who had been blind, and they said to him: “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”
25 Egli disse loro: Se sia peccatore non lo so; ma so questo solo: che ero cieco e ora ci vedo.	25 And so he said to them: “If he is a sinner, I do not know it. One thing I do know, that although I was blind, now I see.”
26 Gli dissero ancora: E che ti fece? Come t'aprì gli occhi?	26 Then they said to him: “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 Ve l'ho pur detto, rispose loro, e l'avete sentito; che volete saper di più? Volete forse anche voi farvi suoi discepoli?	27 He answered them: “I have already told you, and you heard it. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”
28 Ma essi l'ingiuriarono e gli dissero: Sii tu suo discepolo; quanto a noi, siamo discepoli di Mosè.	28 Therefore, they cursed him and said: “You be his disciple. But we are disciples of Moses.
29 Noi sappiamo che a Mosè parlò Dio; ma costui non sappiamo di dove sia.	29 We know that God spoke to Moses. But this man, we do not know where he is from.”
30 Quell'uomo rispose loro: Qui appunto sta la maraviglia, che voi non sapete di dove sia e intanto mi ha aperto gli occhi.	30 The man responded and said to them: “Now in this is a wonder: that you do not know where he is from, and yet he has opened my eyes.
31 Or sappiamo che Dio non ascolta i peccatori; ma se uno ha il timor di Dio e fa la sua volontà, egli l'esaudisce.	31 And we know that God does not hear sinners. But if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, then he heeds him.
32 Da che mondo è mondo non s'è mai sentito dire che uno abbia aperti gli occhi ad un cieco nato.	32 From ancient times, it has not been heard that anyone has opened the eyes of someone born blind.
33 E se questo non fosse da Dio non avrebbe potuto far nulla.	33 Unless this man were of God, he would not be able to do any such thing.”
34 Gli risposero dicendo: Sei nato nel peccato da capo a piedi e ci vuoi fare da maestro? E lo cacciarono fuori.	34 They responded and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and you would teach us?” And they cast him out.
35 Sentì Gesù che l'avevan cacciato fuori, e, incontratolo, gli disse: Credi tu nel Figlio di Dio?	35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out. And when he had found him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”
36 Quello rispose: E chi è, Signore, affinchè creda in lui?	36 He responded and said, “Who is he, Lord, so that I may believe in him?”
37 Gli disse Gesù: L'hai veduto, e chi parla con te è quello.	37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you.”
38 Allora egli esclamò: Signore, io credo. E, prostratosi, l'adorò.	38 And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And falling prostrate, he worshipped him.
39 E Gesù disse: Sono venuto in questo mondo a fare il giudizio: affinchè quelli che non vedono veggano e quei che veggono diventino ciechi.	39 And Jesus said, “I came into this world in judgment, so that those who do not see, may see; and so that those who see, may become blind.”
40 E uditolo alcuni Farisei che eran con lui, gli dissero: Siam forse ciechi anche noi?	40 And certain Pharisees, who were with him, heard this, and they said to him, “Are we also blind?”
41 Gesù rispose: Se foste ciechi non avreste colpa, invece voi dite: Noi vediamo. Resta adunque il vostro peccato.	41 Jesus said to them: “If you were blind, you would not have sin. Yet now you say, ‘We see.’ So your sin persists.”
