1 Ma Gesù andò al monte degli Ulivi.	1 But Jesus continued on to the Mount of Olives.
2 E sul far del giorno tornò di nuovo nel tempio, e tutto il popolo accorse a lui ed egli sedutosi, l'ammaestrava.	2 And early in the morning, he went again to the temple; and all the people came to him. And sitting down, he taught them.
3 Allora gli Scribi ed i Farisei gli condussero una donna colta in adulterio e, postala in mezzo,	3 Now the scribes and Pharisees brought forward a woman caught in adultery, and they stood her in front of them.
4 gli dissero: Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa in flagrante adulterio.	4 And they said to him: “Teacher, this woman was just now caught in adultery.
5 Or Mosè nella legge ci ha comandato che queste tali siano lapidate; e tu che ne dici?	5 And in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a one. Therefore, what do you say?”
6 E dicevan questo per metterlo alla prova e per poterlo accusare. Ma Gesù, chinatosi, si mise a scrivere col dito in terra.	6 But they were saying this to test him, so that they might be able to accuse him. Then Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the earth.
7 E siccome continuavano ad interrogarlo, si alzò e disse loro: Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli contro di lei la prima pietra.	7 And then, when they persevered in questioning him, he stood upright and said to them, “Let whoever is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.”
8 E di nuovo chinatosi, seguitò a scrivere in terra.	8 And bending down again, he wrote on the earth.
9 Ma quelli udito ciò, uno dopo l'altro se ne andarono tutti, cominciando dai più vecchi, e Gesù restò solo con la donna là in mezzo.	9 But upon hearing this, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, with the woman standing in front of him.
10 Allora, Gesù, alzatosi, disse alla donna: Dove sono, o donna, quelli che ti accusavano? Nessuno ti ha condannata?	10 Then Jesus, raising himself up, said to her: “Woman, where are those who accused you? Has no one condemned you?”
11 Ed ella: Nessuno, Signore. E Gesù le disse: Nemmeno io ti condannerò: va' e non peccare più.	11 And she said, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus said: “Neither will I condemn you. Go, and now do not choose to sin anymore.”
12 Di nuovo Gesù parlò ad essi, dicendo: Io sono la luce del mondo: chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce della vita.	12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me does not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
13 Gli dissero allora i Farisei: Tu rendi testimonianza di te stesso, la tua testimonianza non vale.	13 And so the Pharisees said to him, “You offer testimony about yourself; your testimony is not true.”
14 Gesù replicò loro: Sebbene io renda testimonianza di me stesso, val sempre la mia testimonianza, perchè so donde son venuto e dove vado; ma voi non sapete donde io verga e dove io vada.	14 Jesus responded and said to them: “Even though I offer testimony about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going.
15 Voi giudicate secondo la carne: io non giudico nessuno;	15 You judge according to the flesh. I do not judge anyone.
16 e se giudico io, il mio giudizio è vero, perchè non sono solo; ma con me è il Padre che mi ha inviato.	16 And when I do judge, my judgment is true. For I am not alone, but it is I and he who sent me: the Father.
17 Ed anche nella vostra legge sta scritto che è valida la testimonianza di due persone.	17 And it is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.
18 Ora a rendere testimonianza di me stesso ci sono io ed il Padre che mi ha mandato.	18 I am one who offers testimony about myself, and the Father who sent me offers testimony about me.”
19 Gli dissero allora: Dov'è tuo Padre? Rispose Gesù: Non conoscete nè me nè il mio Padre; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il mio Padre.	19 Therefore, they said to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered: “You know neither me, nor my Father. If you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.”
20 Tali parole disse Gesù nel gazofilacio, insegnando nel tempio, e nessuno lo prese, perchè non era ancora giunta l'ora sua.	20 Jesus spoke these words at the treasury, while teaching in the temple. And no one apprehended him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Di nuovo Gesù disse loro: Io me ne vado, e mi cercherete, e morrete nel vostro peccato. Dove vado io, voi non potete venire.	21 Therefore, Jesus again spoke to them: “I am going, and you shall seek me. And you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you are not able to go.”
22 Dicevan perciò i Giudei: Si ucciderà forse da se stesso, chè dice: Dove io vado non potete venire?	22 And so the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself, for he said: ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go?’ ”
23 Ed egli replicò loro: Voi siete di quaggiù; io sono di lassù. Voi siete di questo mondo; io non sono di questo mondo:	23 And he said to them: “You are from below. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.
24 perciò vi ho detto che morrete nei vostri peccati; perchè se non credete che io sono, morrete nei vostri peccati.	24 Therefore, I said to you, that you will die in your sins. For if you will not believe that I am, you will die in your sin.”
25 Gli dissero allora: E chi sei tu? Gesù rispose loro: Il principio che parlo a voi.	25 And so they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them: “The Beginning, who is also speaking to you.
26 Molto ho da dire e condannare riguardo a voi, ma colui che m'ha mandato è verace, quanto ho udito da lui quello dico al mondo.	26 I have much to say about you and to judge. But he who sent me is true. And what I have heard from him, this I speak within the world.”
27 E non intesero che parlava di suo Padre, Dio.	27 And they did not realize that he was calling God his Father.
28 Disse dunque loro Gesù: Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell'uomo, allora conoscerete chi sono io, e che niente faccio da me, e che dico quello che il Padre mi ha insegnato.	28 And so Jesus said to them: “When you will have lifted up the Son of man, then you shall realize that I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but just as the Father has taught me, so do I speak.
29 E chi mi ha mandato è con me e non mi ha lasciato solo, perchè io faccio sempre quello che è di suo piacimento.	29 And he who sent me is with me, and he has not abandoned me alone. For I always do what is pleasing to him.”
30 A queste sue parole molti credettero in lui.	30 As he was speaking these things, many believed in him.
31 Ma Gesù disse ai Giudei che avevano in lui creduto: Se persevererete nei miei insegnamenti, sarete veramente miei discepoli	31 Therefore, Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him: “If you will abide in my word, you will truly be my disciples.
32 e conoscerete la verità, e la verità vi farà liberi.	32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”
33 Gli opposero: Siamo progenie di Abramo, nè giammai servimmo ad alcuno, come dunque dici tu: Sarete liberi?	33 They answered him: “We are the offspring of Abraham, and we have never been a slave to anyone. How can you say, ‘You shall be set free?’ ”
34 Rispose loro Gesù: In verità, in verità vi dico: chi fa il peccato è servo del peccato.	34 Jesus answered them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
35 Or il servo non sta sempre in casa, il figlio invece vi sta sempre.	35 Now the slave does not abide in the house for eternity. Yet the Son does abide in eternity.
36 Se dunque il figlio vi libera, sarete veramente liberi.	36 Therefore, if the Son has set you free, then you will truly be free.
37 Lo so che siete figli di Àbramo; ma intanto cercate di uccidermi, perchè la mia parola non penetra in voi.	37 I know that you are sons of Abraham. But you are seeking to kill me, because my word has not taken hold in you.
38 Io dico quel che ho visto presso il Padre mio, e voi pure fate quello che avete imparato dal padre vostro.	38 I speak what I have seen with my Father. And you do what you have seen with your father.”
39 Gli replicarono: Il padre nostro è Abramo. Rispose loro Gesù: Se siete figli di Abramo fate le opere di Abramo.	39 They responded and said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them: “If you are the sons of Abraham, then do the works of Abraham.
40 Ma intanto cercate di uccider me, chè v'ho detto la verità da me udita da Dio: Abramo non fece così.	40 But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I have heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.
41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro. Gli risposero: Non siamo mica dei bastardi; abbiamo Dio per unico padre.	41 You do the works of your father.” Therefore, they said to him: “We were not born out of fornication. We have one father: God.”
42 Se Dio fosse vostro padre, disse allora Gesù, certamente mi amereste, perchè io procedo e vengo da Dio e non sono venuto da me stesso, ma egli mi ha mandato.	42 Then Jesus said to them: “If God were your father, certainly you would love me. For I proceeded and came from God. For I did not come from myself, but he sent me.
43 Perchè non capite il mio linguaggio? Perchè non potete soffrire i miei discorsi?	43 Why do you not recognize my speech? It is because you are not able to hear my word.
44 Voi avete per padre il diavolo e volete soddisfare i desideri del padre vostro; esso fu omicida fin da principio, e non perseverò nella verità, perchè in lui non c'è verità; quando mentisce parla da suo pari, perchè è bugiardo e padre della menzogna.	44 You are of your father, the devil. And you will carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning. And he did not stand in the truth, because the truth is not in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks it from his own self. For he is a liar, and the father of lies.
45 A me perchè vi dico la verità non credete.	45 But if I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
46 Chi di voi mi potrà convincere di peccato? Se io vi dico la verità, perchè non mi credete?	46 Which of you can convict me of sin? If I speak the truth to you, why do you not believe me?
47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio. Per questo voi non le ascoltate, perchè non siete da Dio.	47 Whoever is of God, hears the words of God. For this reason, you do not hear them: because you are not of God.”
48 Replicarono i Giudei: Non diciamo con ragione che tu sei un samaritano e indemoniato?	48 Therefore, the Jews responded and said to him, “Are we not correct in saying that you are a Samaritan, and that you have a demon?”
49 Gesù rispose: Io non sono indemoniato; ma onoro il Padre mio e voi mi vituperate.	49 Jesus responded: “I do not have a demon. But I honor my Father, and you have dishonored me.
50 Ma io non cerco la mia gloria, c'è chi ne prende cura e ne giudica.	50 But I am not seeking my own glory. There is One who seeks and judges.
51 In verità in verità vi dico: chi custodisce la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno.	51 Amen, amen, I say to you, if anyone will have kept my word, he will not see death for eternity.”
52 Gli dissero allora i Giudei: Or vediamo bene che tu sei posseduto da un demonio. Abramo è morto, e così i profeti e tu dici: Chi custodisce la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno?	52 Therefore, the Jews said: “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the Prophets; and yet you say, ‘If anyone will have kept my word, he shall not taste death for eternity.’
53 Sei forse da più del padre nostro Abramo, che è morto? Ed anche i profeti sono morti. Chi credi mai di essere?	53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. So who do you make yourself to be?”
54 Gesù rispose: Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria è nulla: c'è a glorificarmi il Padre mio, il quale voi dite essere Dio vostro;	54 Jesus responded: “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me. And you say about him that he is your God.
55 ma non lo avete conosciuto. Io sì che lo conosco, e se dicessi di non conoscerlo, sarei, come voi, bugiardo. Ma io lo conosco, ed osservo le sue parole.	55 And yet you have not known him. But I know him. And if I were to say that I do not know him, then I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word.
56 Abramo, padre vostro, sospirò di vedere il mio giorno: lo vide e ne tripudiò.	56 Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he might see my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 Gli opposero i Giudei: Non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai veduto Abramo?	57 And so the Jews said to him, “You have not yet reached fifty years, and you have seen Abraham?”
58 Gesù rispose loro: In verità, in verità vi dico: prima che Abramo fosse nato, io sono.	58 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.”
59 Dettero allora di piglio alle pietre per tirargliele; ma Gesù si nascose ed uscì dal tempio.	59 Therefore, they took up stones to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and he departed from the temple.
