1 Ma Gesù andò al monte degli Ulivi.	1 And Jesus went unto mount Olivet.
2 E sul far del giorno tornò di nuovo nel tempio, e tutto il popolo accorse a lui ed egli sedutosi, l'ammaestrava.	2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and sitting down he taught them.
3 Allora gli Scribi ed i Farisei gli condussero una donna colta in adulterio e, postala in mezzo,	3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman taken in adultery: and they set her in the midst,
4 gli dissero: Maestro, questa donna è stata sorpresa in flagrante adulterio.	4 And said to him: Master, this woman was even now taken in adultery.
5 Or Mosè nella legge ci ha comandato che queste tali siano lapidate; e tu che ne dici?	5 Now Moses in the law commanded us to stone such a one. But what sayest thou?
6 E dicevan questo per metterlo alla prova e per poterlo accusare. Ma Gesù, chinatosi, si mise a scrivere col dito in terra.	6 And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground.
7 E siccome continuavano ad interrogarlo, si alzò e disse loro: Chi di voi è senza peccato, scagli contro di lei la prima pietra.	7 When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 E di nuovo chinatosi, seguitò a scrivere in terra.	8 And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.
9 Ma quelli udito ciò, uno dopo l'altro se ne andarono tutti, cominciando dai più vecchi, e Gesù restò solo con la donna là in mezzo.	9 But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst.
10 Allora, Gesù, alzatosi, disse alla donna: Dove sono, o donna, quelli che ti accusavano? Nessuno ti ha condannata?	10 Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee?
11 Ed ella: Nessuno, Signore. E Gesù le disse: Nemmeno io ti condannerò: va' e non peccare più.	11 Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.
12 Di nuovo Gesù parlò ad essi, dicendo: Io sono la luce del mondo: chi mi segue non camminerà nelle tenebre, ma avrà la luce della vita.	12 Again therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying: I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, walketh not in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 Gli dissero allora i Farisei: Tu rendi testimonianza di te stesso, la tua testimonianza non vale.	13 The Pharisees therefore said to him: Thou givest testimony of thyself: thy testimony is not true.
14 Gesù replicò loro: Sebbene io renda testimonianza di me stesso, val sempre la mia testimonianza, perchè so donde son venuto e dove vado; ma voi non sapete donde io verga e dove io vada.	14 Jesus answered, and said to them: Although I give testimony of myself, my testimony is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go: but you know not whence I come, or whither I go.
15 Voi giudicate secondo la carne: io non giudico nessuno;	15 You judge according to the flesh: I judge not any man.
16 e se giudico io, il mio giudizio è vero, perchè non sono solo; ma con me è il Padre che mi ha inviato.	16 And if I do judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 Ed anche nella vostra legge sta scritto che è valida la testimonianza di due persone.	17 And in your law it is written, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 Ora a rendere testimonianza di me stesso ci sono io ed il Padre che mi ha mandato.	18 I am one that give testimony of myself: and the Father that sent me giveth testimony of me.
19 Gli dissero allora: Dov'è tuo Padre? Rispose Gesù: Non conoscete nè me nè il mio Padre; se conosceste me, conoscereste anche il mio Padre.	19 They said therefore to him: Where is thy Father? Jesus answered: Neither me do you know, nor my Father: if you did know me, perhaps you would know my Father also.
20 Tali parole disse Gesù nel gazofilacio, insegnando nel tempio, e nessuno lo prese, perchè non era ancora giunta l'ora sua.	20 These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
21 Di nuovo Gesù disse loro: Io me ne vado, e mi cercherete, e morrete nel vostro peccato. Dove vado io, voi non potete venire.	21 Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come.
22 Dicevan perciò i Giudei: Si ucciderà forse da se stesso, chè dice: Dove io vado non potete venire?	22 The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come?
23 Ed egli replicò loro: Voi siete di quaggiù; io sono di lassù. Voi siete di questo mondo; io non sono di questo mondo:	23 And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world.
24 perciò vi ho detto che morrete nei vostri peccati; perchè se non credete che io sono, morrete nei vostri peccati.	24 Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.
25 Gli dissero allora: E chi sei tu? Gesù rispose loro: Il principio che parlo a voi.	25 They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you.
26 Molto ho da dire e condannare riguardo a voi, ma colui che m'ha mandato è verace, quanto ho udito da lui quello dico al mondo.	26 Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.
27 E non intesero che parlava di suo Padre, Dio.	27 And they understood not, that he called God his Father.
28 Disse dunque loro Gesù: Quando avrete innalzato il Figlio dell'uomo, allora conoscerete chi sono io, e che niente faccio da me, e che dico quello che il Padre mi ha insegnato.	28 Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak:
29 E chi mi ha mandato è con me e non mi ha lasciato solo, perchè io faccio sempre quello che è di suo piacimento.	29 And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him.
30 A queste sue parole molti credettero in lui.	30 When he spoke these things, many believed in him.
31 Ma Gesù disse ai Giudei che avevano in lui creduto: Se persevererete nei miei insegnamenti, sarete veramente miei discepoli	31 Then Jesus said to those Jews, who believed him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed.
32 e conoscerete la verità, e la verità vi farà liberi.	32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 Gli opposero: Siamo progenie di Abramo, nè giammai servimmo ad alcuno, come dunque dici tu: Sarete liberi?	33 They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been slaves to any man: how sayest thou: you shall be free?
34 Rispose loro Gesù: In verità, in verità vi dico: chi fa il peccato è servo del peccato.	34 Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin.
35 Or il servo non sta sempre in casa, il figlio invece vi sta sempre.	35 Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever; but the son abideth for ever.
36 Se dunque il figlio vi libera, sarete veramente liberi.	36 If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.
37 Lo so che siete figli di Àbramo; ma intanto cercate di uccidermi, perchè la mia parola non penetra in voi.	37 I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 Io dico quel che ho visto presso il Padre mio, e voi pure fate quello che avete imparato dal padre vostro.	38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and you do the things that you have seen with your father.
39 Gli replicarono: Il padre nostro è Abramo. Rispose loro Gesù: Se siete figli di Abramo fate le opere di Abramo.	39 They answered, and said to him: Abraham is our father. Jesus saith to them: If you be the children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham.
40 Ma intanto cercate di uccider me, chè v'ho detto la verità da me udita da Dio: Abramo non fece così.	40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who have spoken the truth to you, which I have heard of God. This Abraham did not.
41 Voi fate le opere del padre vostro. Gli risposero: Non siamo mica dei bastardi; abbiamo Dio per unico padre.	41 You do the works of your father. They said therefore to him: We are not born of fornication: we have one Father, even God.
42 Se Dio fosse vostro padre, disse allora Gesù, certamente mi amereste, perchè io procedo e vengo da Dio e non sono venuto da me stesso, ma egli mi ha mandato.	42 Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded, and came; for I came not of myself, but he sent me:
43 Perchè non capite il mio linguaggio? Perchè non potete soffrire i miei discorsi?	43 Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.
44 Voi avete per padre il diavolo e volete soddisfare i desideri del padre vostro; esso fu omicida fin da principio, e non perseverò nella verità, perchè in lui non c'è verità; quando mentisce parla da suo pari, perchè è bugiardo e padre della menzogna.	44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
45 A me perchè vi dico la verità non credete.	45 But if I say the truth, you believe me not.
46 Chi di voi mi potrà convincere di peccato? Se io vi dico la verità, perchè non mi credete?	46 Which of you shall convince me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me?
47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Dio. Per questo voi non le ascoltate, perchè non siete da Dio.	47 He that is of God, heareth the words of God. Therefore you hear them not, because you are not of God.
48 Replicarono i Giudei: Non diciamo con ragione che tu sei un samaritano e indemoniato?	48 The Jews therefore answered, and said to him: Do not we say well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49 Gesù rispose: Io non sono indemoniato; ma onoro il Padre mio e voi mi vituperate.	49 Jesus answered: I have not a devil: but I honour my Father, and you have dishonoured me.
50 Ma io non cerco la mia gloria, c'è chi ne prende cura e ne giudica.	50 But I seek not my own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 In verità in verità vi dico: chi custodisce la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno.	51 Amen, amen I say to you: If any man keep my word, he shall not see death for ever.
52 Gli dissero allora i Giudei: Or vediamo bene che tu sei posseduto da un demonio. Abramo è morto, e così i profeti e tu dici: Chi custodisce la mia parola non vedrà la morte in eterno?	52 The Jews therefore said: Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest: If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death for ever.
53 Sei forse da più del padre nostro Abramo, che è morto? Ed anche i profeti sono morti. Chi credi mai di essere?	53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead. Whom dost thou make thyself?
54 Gesù rispose: Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria è nulla: c'è a glorificarmi il Padre mio, il quale voi dite essere Dio vostro;	54 Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father that glorifieth me, of whom you say that he is your God.
55 ma non lo avete conosciuto. Io sì che lo conosco, e se dicessi di non conoscerlo, sarei, come voi, bugiardo. Ma io lo conosco, ed osservo le sue parole.	55 And you have not known him, but I know him. And if I shall say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar. But I do know him, and do keep his word.
56 Abramo, padre vostro, sospirò di vedere il mio giorno: lo vide e ne tripudiò.	56 Abraham your father rejoiced that he might see my day: he saw it, and was glad.
57 Gli opposero i Giudei: Non hai ancora cinquant'anni e hai veduto Abramo?	57 The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Gesù rispose loro: In verità, in verità vi dico: prima che Abramo fosse nato, io sono.	58 Jesus said to them: Amen, amen I say to you, before Abraham was made, I am.
59 Dettero allora di piglio alle pietre per tirargliele; ma Gesù si nascose ed uscì dal tempio.	59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him. But Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
