1 (Per la fine. Di David servo del Signore, il quale rivolse al Signore le parole di questo cantico, quando il Signore l'ebbe liberato dalla mano di tutti i suoi nemici e dalla mano di Saul, e disse:)	1 Unto the end. For David, the servant of the Lord, who spoke the words of this canticle to the Lord, in the day that the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said:
2 Ti amo, o Signore, mia forza.	2 I will love you, O Lord my strength.
3 Il Signore è la mia rocca, il mio rifugio, il mio liberatore, il mio Dio, il mio aiuto: in lui potrò sperare: è mio protettore, mio salvatore potente, mio asilo.	3 The Lord is my firmament, my refuge, and my liberator. My God is my helper, and I hope in him: my protector, and the horn of my salvation, and my support.
4 Lodando invoco il Signore, e son liberato dai miei nemici.	4 Praising, I will call upon the Lord. And I will be saved from my enemies.
5 Mi accerchiarono i dolori di morte: i torrenti d'iniquità mi sconvolsero,	5 The sorrows of death surrounded me, and the torrents of iniquity dismayed me.
6 Dolori d'inferno mi attorniarono, mi strinsero all'improvviso i lacci di morte.	6 The sorrows of Hell encompassed me, and the snares of death intercepted me.
7 Nelle mie angustie invocai il Signore, gridai al mio Dio. Ed Egli dal suo tempio santo esau dì la mia voce: il mio grido giun se dinanzi a lui, entrò nei suoi orecchi.	7 In my tribulation, I called upon the Lord, and I cried out to my God. And he listened to my voice from his holy temple. And my cry in his presence entered into his ears.
8 Si commosse e tremò la terra, le basi dei monti si agitarono, scosse, perchè Egli era contro di loro sdegnato.	8 The earth was shaken, and it trembled. The foundations of the mountains were disturbed, and they were shaken, because he was angry with them.
9 Dall'ira di lui saliva il fumo, fuoco ardeva nella sua faccia, sfavillavan da lui carboni accesi.	9 A smoke ascended by his wrath, and a fire flared up from his face: coals were kindled by it.
10 Abbassò i cieli e discese: sotto ai suoi piedi dense nubi.	10 He bent the heavens, and they descended. And darkness was under his feet.
11 Salì sopra i cherubini e volò, volò sulle ali dei venti.	11 And he ascended upon the cherubim, and he flew: he flew upon the feathers of the winds.
12 Pose nelle tenebre il suo nascondiglio, si mise torno torno il suo padiglione: acqua tenebrosa nelle nubi dell'aria.	12 And he set darkness as his hiding place, with his tabernacle all around him: dark waters in the clouds of the air.
13 Per lo splendore della sua faccia si squarciarono le nubi: grandine e carboni accesi.	13 At the brightness that was before his sight, the clouds crossed by, with hail and coals of fire.
14 Il Signore tornò dal cielo, l'Altissimo fece sentire la sua voce: grandine e carboni accesi.	14 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice: hail and coals of fire.
15 Scagliando le sue saette li disperse, moltiplicando i fulmini li mise in scompiglio.	15 And he sent forth his arrows and scattered them. He multiplied lightnings, and he set them in disarray.
16 Apparvero allora le sorgenti delle acque, furono messi a nudo i fondamenti della terra, dalle tue minacce, o Signore, dal vento impetuoso della tua ira.	16 Then the fountains of waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were revealed, by your rebuke, O Lord, by the inspiration of the Spirit of your wrath.
17 Mi porse la mano dall'alto e mi prese, mi trasse fuori dalle grandi acque.	17 He sent from on high, and he accepted me. And he took me up, out of many waters.
18 Mi liberò dai miei potentissimi nemici, dai miei avversari, chè erano molto più forti di me.	18 He rescued me from my strongest enemies, and from those who hated me. For they had been too strong for me.
19 Mi piombarono addosso all'improvviso nel giorno della mia sventura; ma il Signore fu il mio sostegno,	19 They intercepted me in the day of my affliction, and the Lord became my protector.
20 E mi trasse fuori al largo, mi salvò, perchè mi volle bene.	20 And he led me out, into a wide place. He accomplished my salvation, because he willed me.
21 Il Signore mi ha ricompensato secondo la mia giustizia, mi ha retribuito secondo la purezza delle mie mani;	21 And the Lord will reward me according to my justice, and he will repay me according to the purity of my hands.
22 Perchè ho custodite le vie del Signore e non mi son mai empiamente allontanato dal mio Dio.	22 For I have preserved the ways of the Lord, and I have not behaved impiously before my God.
23 Tutte le sue leggi mi stavan davanti, e non respingevo lungi da me i suoi precetti.	23 For all his judgments are in my sight, and his justice, I have not pushed away from me.
24 E sono stato senza macchia verso di lui, e mi son guardato dalla mia iniquità.	24 And I will be immaculate together with him, and I will keep myself from my iniquity.
25 E il Signore mi ha ricompensato secondo la mia giustizia, secondo la purezza che hanno le mie mani dinanzi agli occhi suoi.	25 And the Lord will reward me according to my justice and according to the purity of my hands before his eyes.
26 Col santo sei pietoso, coll'innocente sei integro.	26 With the holy, you will be holy, and with the innocent, you will be innocent,
27 Coll'eletto sei sincero, e col perverso imperversi.	27 and with the elect, you will be elect, and with the perverse, you will be perverse.
28 Tu salvi il popolo umile e umilii gli occhi dei superbi.	28 For you will save the humble people, but you will bring down the eyes of the arrogant.
29 Tu dài luce alla mia lampada, o Signore; o mio Dio, rischiara le mie tenebre.	29 For you illuminate my lamp, O Lord. My God, enlighten my darkness.
30 Per te son liberato dalla tentazione, per il mio Dio dò la scalata alle mura.	30 For in you, I will be delivered from temptation; and with my God, I will climb over a wall.
31 Il mio Dio! Immacolata è la sua via, le parole del Signore son provate col fuoco; Egli è protettore di tutti quelli che sperano in lui.	31 As for my God, his way is undefiled. The eloquence of the Lord has been examined by fire. He is the protector of all who hope in him.
32 E chi è Dio se non il Signore? Qual Dio vi può essere fuori del nostro Dio ?	32 For who is God, except the Lord? And who is God, except our God?
33 Dio è colui che mi cinse di fortezza, e rese immacolata la mia via,	33 It is God who has wrapped me with virtue and made my way immaculate.
34 Che rese agili i miei piedi come quelli dei cervi, e mi pose al sicuro sulle alture.	34 It is he who has perfected my feet, like the feet of deer, and who stations me upon the heights.
35 Egli addestrò le mie mani alla battaglia; tu facesti le mie braccia come arco di bronzo;	35 It is he who trains my hands for battle. And you have set my arms like a bow of brass.
36 Tu mi desti lo scudo della tua salvezza. La tua destra mi sostenne; la tua disciplina mi ha sempre regolato, la tua stessa disciplina mi sarà di guida.	36 And you have given me the protection of your salvation. And your right hand sustains me. And your discipline has corrected me unto the end. And your discipline itself will teach me.
37 Tu allargasti la mia strada sotto i miei passi, e i miei piedi e non vacillarono.	37 You have expanded my footsteps under me, and my tracks have not been weakened.
38 Inseguii i miei nemici, li raggiunsi, non tornai indietro finché non furono annientati.	38 I will pursue my enemies and apprehend them. And I will not turn back until they have failed.
39 Li stritolai, e non poteron più reggersi, caddero sotto i miei piedi.	39 I will break them, and they will not be able to stand. They will fall under my feet.
40 Tu mi cingesti di valore per la guerra, e facesti cadere sotto di me i miei avversari;	40 And you have wrapped me with virtue for the battle. And those rising up against me, you have subdued under me.
41 Facesti che i miei nemici mi voltassero le spalle, e disperdesti quelli che mi odiano.	41 And you have given the back of my enemies to me, and you have destroyed those who hated me.
42 Essi gridarono, ma non v'era chi li salvasse; gridarono al Signore, ma non li esaudì.	42 They cried out, but there was none to save them, to the Lord, but he did not heed them.
43 E li stritolai come polvere al vento, li spazzai via come il fango dalle piazze.	43 And I will crush them into dust before the face of the wind, so that I will obliterate them like the mud in the streets.
44 Tu mi salvasti dalle contraddizioni del popolo, mi hai posto a capo delle nazioni.	44 You will rescue me from the contradictions of the people. You will set me at the head of the Gentiles.
45 Un popolo che non conoscevo è a me soggetto, con orecchio attento mi ubbidisce.	45 A people I did not know has served me. As soon as their ears heard, they were obedient to me.
46 I figli stranieri mi adulano, i figli stranieri sono invecchiati, sono andati zoppicando fuori della loro strada.	46 The sons of foreigners have been deceitful to me, the sons of foreigners have grown weak with time, and they have wavered from their paths.
47 Viva il Signore! Sia benedetto il mio Dio, sia esaltato il mio Dio Salvatore.	47 The Lord lives, and blessed is my God, and may the God of my salvation be exalted:
48 O Dio, sei tu che mi dài le vendette, che mi assoggetti i popoli, che mi liberi dai miei furiosi nemici.	48 O God, who vindicates me and who subdues the people under me, my liberator from my enraged enemies.
49 E tu mi esalti sopra i miei avversari, mi salvi dall'uomo iniquo.	49 And you will exalt me above those who rise up against me. From the iniquitous man, you will rescue me.
50 Per questo ti loderò tra le nazioni, o Signore, e canterò inni al tuo nome,	50 Because of this, O Lord, I will confess to you among the nations, and I will compose a psalm to your name:
51 Che dà magnifiche vittorie al suo re e fa misericordia al suoUnto, a David, e alla sua proge­nie in eterno.	51 magnifying the salvation of his king, and showing mercy to David, his Christ, and to his offspring, even for all time.
