1 Dopo questo Mosè ed Aronne andarono da Faraone e gli dissero: « Queste cose dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Lascia andare il mio popolo, affinchè mi offerisca un sacrifizio nel deserto ».	1 After these things, Moses and Aaron entered, and they said to Pharaoh: “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Release my people, so that they may sacrifice to me in the desert.”
2 Ma egli rispose: « Chi è mai il Signore, da essere io obbligato ad ascoltarne la voce e lasci andare Israele? Io non conosco il Signore, e quindi non lascerò partire Israele ».	2 But he responded: “Who is the Lord, that I should listen to his voice and release Israel? I do not know the Lord, and I will not release Israel.”
3 Ed essi dissero: « Il Dio degli Ebrei ci ha chiamati, affinchè andiamo tre giornate di cammino nel deserto a sacrificare al Signore Dio nostro, per non esser colpiti colla peste o colla spada ».	3 And they said: “The God of the Hebrews has called us, so that we may go three days’ journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord our God. Otherwise, a pestilence or the sword may befall us.”
4 Il re d'Egitto rispose loro: « Perchè voi, Mosè ed Aronne, distogliete il popolo dai suoi lavori? Andate a fare quanto v'è imposto ».	4 The king of Egypt said to them: “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, distract the people from their works? Go back to your burdens.”
5 Poi Faraone aggiunse: « È già troppo numeroso nel paese questo popolo, e voi vedete quanto è cresciuto: e quanto si moltiplicherà se date loro qualche sollievo dai lavori? »	5 And Pharaoh said: “The people of the land are many. You see that the turmoil has increased: how much more if you give them rest from the works?”
6 E in quello stesso giorno Faraone diede quest'ordine ai sovraintendenti dei lavori ed agli esattori del popolo:	6 Therefore, on the same day, he instructed the overseers of the works, and the taskmasters of the people, saying:
7 « Non date più, come prima, la paglia al popolo per fare i mattoni, ma vadano essi a raccoglierla.	7 “You shall no longer give chaff to the people to form bricks, as before. But they may go and gather straw.
8 Ed esigete da loro la stessa quantità di mattoni di prima, senza diminuzione alcuna; essi stanno in ozio, ecco perchè gridando dicono: andiamo a sacrificare al nostro Dio.	8 And you shall impose upon them the same quota of bricks that they made before. Neither will you lessen anything, for they are idle, and therefore they cry out, saying: ‘We shall go and sacrifice to our God.’
9 Siano dunque oppressi dai lavori e li faccian bene, e così non daran più retta a menzogne! »	9 They shall be oppressed with works, and these shall occupy them, so that they may not agree to lying words.”
10 Allora i sovraintendenti dei lavori e gli esattori andarono a dire al popolo: « Così dice Faraone: Io non darò più paglia:	10 And so the overseers of the works and the taskmasters went out and said to the people: “Thus says Pharaoh: I give you no chaff.
11 andate a raccoglierla, dove potrete trovarne, e il vostro lavoro non sia per nulla diminuito ».	11 Go, and collect it wherever you are able to find it. Neither will anything of your work be diminished.”
12 Così il popolo si sparse per tutta la terra Egitto a raccoglier paglia.	12 And the people were dispersed through all the land of Egypt, in order to gather straw.
13 E i sovraintendenti dei lavori li sollecitavano col dire: « Dovete compire il vostro lavoro giorno per giorno, come solevasi fare quando vi si dava la paglia ».	13 Likewise, the overseers of the works pressured them, saying: “Complete your work each day, just as you were accustomed to do before, when straw was given to you.”
14 E quelli che presiedevano ai lavori de figli d'Israele furon flagellati dagli esatti di Faraone, i quali dicevano: « Perché nè ieri nè oggi avete fornito, come prima, la stessa quantità di mattoni? »	14 And those who were first in the works of the sons of Israel were scourged by Pharaoh’s taskmasters, saying: “Why have you not filled the quota of bricks, neither yesterday, nor today, just as before?”
15 E quelli che presiedevano ai figli d'Israele andarono a lagnarsi da Faraone ed a dire: « Perchè tratti così i tuoi servi?	15 And the first among the sons of Israel came, and they cried out to Pharaoh, saying: “Why do act against your servants in this way?
16 Non ci vien data più la paglia, e i mattoni devono essere quanti prima, e po noi tuoi servi siam battuti coi flagelli, vien fatta ingiustizia al tuo popolo ».	16 Straw is not given to us, and yet the same amount of bricks is commanded. So we, your servants, are cut up by scourging, and injustice is done against your people.”
17 Egli disse: « Siete degli oziosi, e per questo dite: Andiamo a sacrificare al Signore.	17 And he said: “You are idle. And for this reason you say, ‘We shall go and sacrifice to the Lord.’
18 Andate invece a lavorare: non vi sarà più data la paglia e dovete fornire il solito numero di mattoni ».	18 Therefore, go and work. Straw will not be given to you, and you will return the customary number of bricks.”
19 E coloro che presiedevano ai figli d'Israele si vedevano in una brutta situazione, sentendo quest'ordine: « Non diminuite per nulla il numero dei mattoni a fornirsi ogni giorno ».	19 And the first among the sons of Israel saw themselves in a crisis, because it was said to them, “Nothing at all will be lessened from the bricks throughout each day.”
20 E quando uscirono da Faraone, avendo incontrato Mosè ed Aronne che stavano ad aspettarli,	20 And they met with Moses and Aaron, who stood opposite them as they departed from Pharaoh.
21 dissero loro: « Il Signore guardi giudichi: voi ci avete resi odiosi a Faraone e ai suoi servi, e gli avete posto la mano la spada per ucciderci ».	21 And they said to them: “May the Lord see and judge, because you have caused our odor to become foul before Pharaoh and his servants, and you have provided him with a sword, in order to kill us.”
22 Allora Mosè si rivolse al Signore e disse: Signore, perchè hai afflitto questo popolo? Perchè hai mandato me?	22 And Moses returned to the Lord, and he said: “Lord, why have you afflicted this people? Why have you sent me?
23 Ecco, da quando sono andato da Faraone per parlargli in tuo nome, egli ha afflitto il tuo popolo, e tu non li hai liberati ».	23 For from the time that I entered to Pharaoh, so as to speak in your name, he has afflicted your people. And you have not freed them.”
