1 Or il popolo, vedendo che Mosè tardava a scendere dal monte, si radunò contro Aronne e disse: « Orsù, facci degli dèi che ci vadano innanzi, perchè di Mosè, di quell'uomo che ci ha tratti dall'Egitto, non sappiamo che ne sia stato ».	1 Then the people, seeing that Moses made a delay in descending from the mountain, gathered together against Aaron, and said: “Rise up, make us gods, who may go before us. But as for this man Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.”
2 E Aronne rispose loro: « Prendete gli orecchini d'oro delle vostre mogli, dei vostri figli, delle vostre figlie e portatemeli ».	2 And Aaron said to them, “Take the golden earrings from the ears of your wives, and your sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”
3 E il popolo fece quel che gli aveva comandato, e portò gli orecchini ad Aronne,	3 And the people did what he had commanded, carrying the earrings to Aaron.
4 il quale li prese, li fece fondere, e ne formò un vitello di getto. E quelli dissero: « O Israele, ecco tuoi dèi che ti han tratto dalla terra d'Egitto! »	4 And when he had received them, he formed these by the work of a casting furnace, and he made from these a molten calf. And they said: “These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.”
5 Aronne veduto ciò, edificò un altare davanti al vitello e fece gridare da un banditore: « Domani sarà festa in onore del Signore ».	5 And when Aaron had seen it, he built an altar before it, and he cried out with a voice of proclamation, saying, “Tomorrow is the solemnity of the Lord.”
6 E la mattina dopo, levatisi presto, offrirono olocausti e ostie pacifiche; il popolo si adagiò a mangiare e bere e poi si alzò per divertirsi.	6 And rising up in the morning, they offered holocausts, and peace victims, and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and they rose up to play.
7 Ma il Signore disse a Mosè: « Va, scendi: il tuo popolo, che tu hai tratto dalla terra d'Egitto, ha peccato:	7 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Go, descend. Your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, have sinned.
8 si son presto allontanati dalla via che tu hai laro mostrato; si son fatti un vitello di getto, l'hanno adorato, e immolandogli vittime han detto: Ecco, Israele, i tuoi dèi che ti hanno tratto dalla terra d'Egitto ».	8 They have quickly withdrawn from the way which you revealed to them. And they have made for themselves a molten calf, and they have worshiped it. And immolating victims to it, they have said: ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who led you away from the land of Egypt.’ ”
9 E il Signore disse a Mosè: « Vedo bene che questo popolo è di dura cervice;	9 And again, the Lord said to Moses: “I discern that this people is stiff-necked.
10 or lasciami fare, chè il mio furore si accenda contro di loro e li stermini, e poi farò te capo di una grande nazione! »	10 Release me, so that my fury may be enraged against them, and I may destroy them, and then I will make of you a great nation.”
11 Ma, Mosè supplicava il Signore Dio suo,dicendo: « Perchè, o Signore, t'infiammi nel furore contro il tuo popolo che tu hai tratto dalla terra d'Egitto con forza, grande e mano potente?	11 Then Moses prayed to the Lord his God, saying: “Why, O Lord, is your fury enraged against your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, with great strength and with a mighty hand?
12 Fa, te ne scongiuro, che non dicano gli Egiziani: Maliziosamente li trasse fuori, per ucciderli sulle montagne e sterminarli dal mondo. Si calmi il tuo sdegno, e tu lasciati placare relativamente alla iniquità del tuo popolo.	12 I beg you, let not the Egyptians say, ‘He cleverly led them away, so that he could put them to death in the mountains and destroy them from the earth.’ Let your anger be quieted and appeased concerning the wickedness of your people.
13 Ricordati d'Abramo, d'Isacco e d'Israele, tuoi servi, ai quali, per te stesso giurando, dicesti: Moltiplicherò la vostra stirpe come le stelle del cielo; e tutta questa terra di cui ho parlato la darò alla vostra stirpe, e la possederete in perpetuo ».	13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your very self, saying: ‘I will multiply your offspring like the stars of heaven. And this entire land, about which I have spoken, I will give to your offspring. And you shall possess it forever.’ ”
14 E il Signore si placò e non fece al suo popolo quel male che aveva minacciato.	14 And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken against his people.
15 E Mosè ritornò dal monte, portando in mano le due tavole della legge, scritte da una parte e dall'altra,	15 And Moses returned from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, written on both sides,
16 fatte per opera di Dio, del quale era anche la scrittura scolpita sulle tavole.	16 and accomplished by the work of God. Also, the writing of God was engraved on the tablets.
17 Or Giosuè, udendo il tumulto del popolo che gridava, disse a Mosé: « Si sente un grido di battaglia negli accampamenti ».	17 Then Joshua, hearing the tumult of the people shouting, said to Moses: “The outcry of battle is heard in the camp.”
18 Mosè rispose: « Questo non è il grido di gente che si esorti a combattere, nè il grido di gente che si ecciti alla fuga, ma quella che io sento è voce di gente che canta ».	18 But he responded: “It is not the clamor of men being exhorted to battle, nor the shout of men being compelled to flee. But I hear the voice of singing.”
19 E come fu vicino al campo, e vide il vitello e le danze, sdegnato altamente, gettò dalle mani le tavole, e le spezzò alle falde del monte.	19 And when he had approached to the camp, he saw the calf and the dances. And being very angry, he threw down the tablets from his hand, and he broke them at the base of the mountain.
20 Poi preso il vitello che essi avevan fatto, lo bruciò, lo ridusse in polvere, che poi sparse nell'acqua e fece bere ai figli d'Israele.	20 And seizing the calf, which they had made, he burnt it and crushed it, even to dust, which he scattered into water. And he gave from it to the sons of Israel to drink.
21 E disse ad Aronne: « Che t'ha fatto questo popolo da attirar sopra di lui così gran peccato? »	21 And he said to Aaron, “What has this people done to you, so that you would bring upon them the greatest sin?”
22 E Aronne rispose: « Non s'adiri il mio signore: tu ben conosci questo popolo e quanto sia inclinato al male.	22 And he answered him: “Let not my lord be indignant. For you know this people, that they are prone to evil.
23 Essi m'han detto: Facci degli dèi che ci vadano innanzi, perchè di quel Mosé che ci trasse dalla terra d'Egitto non sappiamo che ne sia stato. Ed io ho loro detto:	23 They said to me: ‘Make gods for us, who may go before us. For this Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.’
24 Chi di voi ha dell'oro? Lo portarono, me lo diedero, io lo gettai nel fuoco, e ne venne fuori questo vitello ».	24 And I said to them, ‘Which of you has gold?’ And they took it and gave it to me. And I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
25 Allora Mosè, vedendo che il popolo era spogliato (Aronne infatti lo aveva spogliato per questa obbrobriosa vergogna e l'aveva messo nudo in mezzo ai nemici),	25 Therefore, Moses, seeing that the people were naked (for Aaron had stripped them because of the disgrace of their sordidness, and he had set them naked among their enemies),
26 stando sulla porta degli accampamenti, disse: « Chi è per il Signore si unisca a me! » E si radunarono intorno a lui tutti i figli di Levi.	26 and standing at the gate of the camp, said: “If anyone is for the Lord, let him join with me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him.
27 Ed egli disse loro: « Così dice il Signore Dio d'Israele: Impugnata la spada al fianco, andate e venite da una porta all'altra attraverso gli accampamenti e ognuno uccida il fratello, l'amico, il vicino ».	27 And he said to them: “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Let a man place his sword at his thigh. Go forth, and then return, from gate to gate, through the midst of the camp, and let each one kill his brother, and friend, and neighbor.”
28 I figli di Levi fecero secondo la parola di Mosè, e caddero in quel giorno circa ventitremila uomini.	28 And the sons of Levi did according to the words of Moses, and there fell on that day about twenty-three thousand men.
29 E Mosè disse loro: « Oggi voi avete consacrato al Signore le vostre mani, ciascuno nel proprio figlio, nel proprio fratello, per ottenere la benedizione ».	29 And Moses said: “On this day, you have consecrated your hands to the Lord, each one in his son and in his brother, so that a blessing may be given to you.”
30 Il giorno dopo, Mosè disse al popolo: « Voi avete commesso un grandissimo peccato: io salirò al Signore, per vedere se in qualche modo posso ottenere il perdono pel vostro delitto ».	30 Then, when the next day arrived, Moses spoke to the people: “You have sinned the greatest sin. I will ascend to the Lord. Perhaps, in some way, I might be able to entreat him for your wickedness.”
31 E tornato al Signore, disse: « Questo popolo ha commesso un grandissimo peccato, facendosi degli dèi d'oro; ti prego, perdona loro,	31 And returning to the Lord, he said: “I beg you, this people has sinned the greatest sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold. Either release them from this offense,
32 O, se non vuoi perdonare, cancellami dal tuo libro che hai scritto ».	32 or, if you do not, then delete me from the book that you have written.”
33 Il Signore gli rispose: « Colui che ha peccato contro di me, quello cancellerò dal mio libro;	33 And the Lord answered him: “Whoever has sinned against me, him I will delete from my book.
34 ma tu invece devi andare e condurre questo popolo dove io t'ho detto; e il mio angelo andrà dinanzi a te. Io poi nel giorno della vendetta punirò anche questo loro peccato ».	34 But as for you, go and lead this people where I have told you. My angel will go before you. Then, on the day of retribution, I will also visit this sin of theirs.”
35 Il Signore adunque percosse il popolo pel delitto del vitello che Aronne aveva fatto.	35 Therefore, the Lord struck the people for the guilt of the calf, which Aaron had made.
