| 1 Or Sarai, moglie di Abramo, non avendo figlioli, ma avendo una schiava egiziana chiamava Agar, | 1 Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar; |
| 2 disse al suo marito: « Ecco, il Signore mi ha fatta sterile da non poter partorire: va dalla mia schiava, cosi forse avrò almeno da lei dei figlioli ». E avendo Abramo ascoltate le sue preghiere, | 2 and Sarai said to Abram, "Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children; go in to my maid; it may be that I shall obtain children by her." And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. |
| 3 essa, passati dieci anni dacché eran venuti a dimorare nella terrà di Canaan, prese la sua schiava egiziana Agar e la diede come moglie al suo marito. | 3 So, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. |
| 4 Ed egli s'accostò ad Agar, la quale sentendo d'aver concepito, disprezzo la sua padrona. | 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. |
| 5 E Sarai disse ad Abramo: « Tu mi fai torto: io t'ho data tra le braccia la mia schiava, ed essa, accorgendosi d'aver concepito, mi disprezza: il Signore giudichi fra me e te ». | 5 And Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my maid to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!" |
| 6 Abramo le rispose: « Ecco, la tua schiava è in tuo potere: fa di lei quel che ti piace ». Ma Agar, trattata duramente da Sarai, se ne fuggì. | 6 But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her as you please." Then Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her. |
| 7 E la trovò nel deserto, presso la fonte di acqua che è nella strada di Sur nel deserto, l'angelo del Signore, | 7 The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. |
| 8 che le disse: « Agar, serva di Sarai, di dove vieni? e dove vai? » Ed essa rispose: « Fuggo dal cospetto di Sarai mia padrona ». | 8 And he said, "Hagar, maid of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from my mistress Sarai." |
| 9 E l'angelo del Signore a lei: « Torna dalla tua padrona e sottomettiti». | 9 The angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit to her." |
| 10 E aggiunse: « Io moltiplicherò grandemente la tua posterità che, da quanto sarà numerosa, non potrà esser contata ». | 10 The angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will so greatly multiply your descendants that they cannot be numbered for multitude." |
| 11 E le disse ancora: « Ecco tu hai concepito e partorirai un figlio, al quale porrai nome Ismaele, perchè il Signore ha sentita la tua afflizione. | 11 And the angel of the LORD said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son; you shall call his name Ishmael; because the LORD has given heed to your affliction. |
| 12 Egli sarà uomo feroce: le mani di lui contro tutti e le mani di tutti contro lui: egli pianterà le tende in faccia a tutti i suoi fratelli ». | 12 He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against every man and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen." |
| 13 Ed essa chiamò il nome del Signore, che le parlava: « Tu il Dio che m'hai veduta », perchè essa aveva detto: « Certamente io qui ho veduto il dorso di colui che mi ha veduta ». | 13 So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "Thou art a God of seeing"; for she said, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing him?" |
| 14 Perciò chiamò quel pozzo « Pozzo del vivente che mi vede ». Esso è tra Cades e Barad. | 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered. |
| 15 Agar poi partorì un figlio ad Abramo, il quale gli pose nome Ismaele. | 15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. |
| 16 Abramo aveva ottantasei anni quando Agar gli partorì Ismaele. | 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram. |
