| 2 Ma nè lui, nè i suoi ministri, nè il popolo delle sue terre diedero ascolto alle parole del Signore che aveva pronunziate per Geremia profeta. | 2 But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the LORD which he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet. |
| 3 E il re Sedecia mandò Jucal, figlio di Selemia, e Sofonia, figlio di Maasia, sacerdote, a Geremia profeta per dirgli: «Prega per noi il Signore Dio nostro!». | 3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Ma-aseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "Pray for us to the LORD our God." |
| 4 Geremia girava liberamente in mezzo al popolo, perchè non l'avevano rimesso in prigione. L'esercito di Faraone poi aveva varcato la frontiera di Egitto e i Caldei, che assediavano Gerusalemme, ricevutone l'annunzio si erano ritirati da Gerusalemme. | 4 Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison. |
| 5 E il Signore comunicò la sua parola a Geremia profeta dicendogli: | 5 The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they withdrew from Jerusalem. |
| 6 «Così dice il Signore Dio di Israele: - Così direte al re di Giuda che vi ha mandati a interrogarmi: "Ecco che l'esercito di Faraone che è uscito in vostro soccorso ritornerà nel suo territorio d'Egitto. | 6 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: |
| 7 E i Caldei torneranno e daranno l'assalto a questa città e la prenderanno e la daranno alle fiamme". | 7 "Thus says the LORD, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, 'Behold, Pharaoh's army which came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land. |
| 8 Così dice il Signore: "Non v'illudete dicendo: Dovranno andarsene i Caldei e ritirarsi da noi, perchè non se ne andranno. | 8 And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city; they shall take it and burn it with fire. |
| 9 Quand'anche avrete sconfitto tutto l'esercito dei Caldei che combattono contro di voi e saranno rimasti solo alcuni pochi feriti, risorgeranno ciascuno dalla sua tenda e daranno la città alle fiamme!"-». | 9 Thus says the LORD, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, "The Chaldeans will surely stay away from us," for they will not stay away. |
| 10 Essendosi dunque l'esercito dei Caldei ritirato da Gerusalemme, a motivo dell'esercito di Faraone, | 10 For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.'" |
| 11 Geremia volle uscire da Gerusalemme per andarsene nella terra di Beniamino e dividere ivi un fondo in presenza dei cittadini. | 11 Now when the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh's army, |
| 12 Ma giunto che fu alla porta di Beniamino c'era il custode di turno a guardia della porta, uno di nome Jeria, figlio di Selemia, figlio di Anania, e fermò Geremia profeta dicendo: «Tu vuoi fuggire ai Caldei!». | 12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to receive his portion there among the people. |
| 13 Ma Geremia rispose: «Non è vero, io non voglio fuggire ai Caldei!». E Jeria, senz'altro ascoltare, lo arrestò e lo condusse dai principi. | 13 When he was at the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans." |

| 16 E il re Sedecia mandò a prenderlo, e lo interrogò in casa sua segretamente, e gli disse: «C'è qualche parola da parte del Signore?». «Sì, c'è», rispose Geremia «tu sarai dato in mano del re di Babilonia!». | 16 When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells, and remained there many days, |
| 17 Poi Geremia disse al re Sedecia: «Che male ho fatto io a te e ai tuoi ministri e al popolo tuo da gettarmi in fondo a una prigione? | 17 King Zedekiah sent for him, and received him. The king questioned him secretly in his house, and said, "Is there any word from the LORD?" Jeremiah said, "There is." Then he said, "You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon." |
| 18 Dove sono i vostri profeti che vi profetizzavano e dicevano: - Il re di Babilonia non verrà contro di voi, nè contro questa terra? - | 18 Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, "What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, that you have put me in prison? |
| 19 Ma ora ascolta, o re, mio signore, te ne scongiuro: Valga questa mia preghiera nel tuo cospetto, e non rimandarmi nella casa di Jonatan scriba, affinchè ivi non muoia!». | 19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land? |
| 20 Allora Sedecia diede ordine che Geremia fosse mantenuto nel cortile del carcere e gli fosse data una pagnotta al giorno, salvo il companatico, fino a che non venisse a mancare pane in città; e Geremia restò nel cortile della carcere. | 20 Now hear, I pray you, O my lord the king: let my humble plea come before you, and do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there." |
| 21 So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard; and a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers' street, until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. |
