BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - In quel tempo rifulse Matatia, figlio di Giovanni figlio di Simone, sacerdote della stirpe di Joarib da Gerusalemme. Egli dimorava sul monte di Modin,	1 About then, Mattathias son of John, son of Simeon, a priest of the line of Joarib, left Jerusalem andsettled in Modein.
2 ed aveva cinque figli: Giovanni, detto Gaddis;	2 He had five sons, John known as Gaddi,
3 Simone, detto Tasi ;	3 Simon cal ed Thassi,
4 Giuda, detto Maccabeo;	4 Judas cal ed Maccabaeus,
5 Eleazaro detto Abaron; e Gionata, detto Affus.	5 Eleazar, cal ed Avaran, and Jonathan cal ed Apphus.
6 Essi vedevano il male che veniva fatto nel popolo di Giuda ed in Gerusalemme.	6 When he saw the blasphemies being committed in Judah and Jerusalem,
7 E disse Matatia: « Me misero! Dovevo io nascere per vedere l’afflizione del popolo mio, e l’abiezione della città santa ed assistervi [senza far niente], mentre vien data in mano a’ nemici?	7 he said, 'Alas that I should have been born to witness the ruin of my people and the ruin of the HolyCity, and to sit by while she is delivered over to her enemies, and the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners.
8 Le cose sante son cadute in mano degli stranieri ; il suo tempio è come [la casa d’] un uomo ignobile;	8 'Her Temple has become like someone of no repute,
9 suoi preziosi arredi sono stati portati via; i suoi vecchi son stati trucidati per le piazze, i suoi giovani son caduti sotto la spada dei nemici.	9 the vessels that were her glory have been carried off as booty, her babies have been slaughtered inher streets, her young men by the enemy's sword.
10 Qual nazione non si è impossessata nel suo regno, e non ha avuto parte delle sue spoglie?	10 Is there a nation that has not claimed a share of her royal prerogatives, that has not taken some of herspoils?
11 Tutta la sua bellezza è sparita ; da libera, è diventata schiava.	11 Al her ornaments have been snatched from her, her former freedom has become slavery.
12 Ecco che la nostra santità, la nostra bellezza, la nostra gloria son devastate, e contaminate dalle nazioni.	12 See how the Holy Place, our beauty, our glory, is now laid waste, see how the gentiles have profanedit!
13 A che dunque vivere ancora? ».	13 What have we left to live for?'
14 E Matatia ed i figli suoi si strapparon le vesti, si coprirono di cinzii, e piansero a lungo.	14 Mattathias and his sons tore their garments, put on sackcloth, and observed deep mourning.
15 Or giunsero messi del re Antioco, per obbligar quelli che si erano rifugiati nella città di Modin ad immolare, bruciare incensi, e rinnegate la legge di Dio.	15 The king's commissioners who were enforcing the apostasy came to the town of Modein for thesacrifices.
16 Molti d’Israele acconsentirono, e fecero lega con loro; ma Matatia ed i suoi figli stettero saldi.	16 Many Israelites gathered round them, but Mattathias and his sons drew apart.
17 Dissero dunque a Matatia quelli ch’erano stati mandati, dal re Antioco: «In questa città sei tu il primo, più illustre e più grande, con una corona di figli e fratelli;	17 The king's commissioners then addressed Mattathias as fol ows, 'You are a respected leader, a greatman in this town; you have sons and brothers to support you.
18 fatti dunque avanti per il primo, ed obbedisci al comando del re, com’han fatto tutte le nazioni e quelli di Giuda, e quelli che son rimasti in Gerusalemme; tu ed i tuoi figliuoli sarete tra gli amici del re, ed avrai in abbondanza oro ed argento e ricchi doni ».	18 Be the first to step forward and conform to the king's decree, as all the nations have done, and theleaders of Judah and the survivors in Jerusalem; you and your sons shal be reckoned among the Friends of theKing, you and your sons wil be honoured with gold and silver and many presents.'
19 Rispose Matatia, e disse a gran voce: « Anche se tutte le genti obbedissero al re Antioco, e tutti s'allontanassero dalla legge de' padri loro per fare secondo il comando di lui;	19 Raising his voice, Mattathias retorted, 'Even if every nation living in the king's dominions obeys him,each forsaking its ancestral religion to conform to his decrees,
20 io ed i miei figli ed i miei fratelli obbediremo alla legge del padri nostri.	20 I, my sons and my brothers will stil fol ow the covenant of our ancestors.
21 Ci guardi Iddio! Non è bene per noi rinnegare la legge ed i comandamenti di Dio.	21 May Heaven preserve us from forsaking the Law and its observances.
22 Non daremo ascolto alle parole del re Antioco, e non trasgrediremo i comandamenti della legge nostra per sacrificare e seguire le vie degli stranieri ».	22 As for the king's orders, we will not fol ow them: we shal not swerve from our own religion either toright or to left.'
23 Aveva appena finito di parlare cosi, ed ecco un giudeo farsi avanti, sotto gli occhi di tutti, per sacrificare agl' Idoli sull'ara posta in Modin secondo il comando del re.	23 As he finished speaking, a Jew came forward in the sight of al to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modeinas the royal edict required.
24 Lo vide Matatia, e ne gemè, e si commossero le sue viscere, ed arse di zelo secondo il precetto della legge. Si fece addosso a quell'uomo, e l'uccise sull’ara;	24 When Mattathias saw this, he was fired with zeal; stirred to the depth of his being, he gave vent to hislegitimate anger, threw himself on the man and slaughtered him on the altar.
25 uccise in quel pari tempo anche il messo del re Antioco che costringeva ai sacrifizii, e rovesciò l'altare,	25 At the same time he killed the king's commissioner who was there to enforce the sacrifice, and toredown the altar.
26 e zelò l'onor della legge, come aveva fatto Finees con Zamri figlio di Saloml.	26 In his zeal for the Law he acted as Phinehas had against Zimri son of Salu.
27 Poi gridò Matatia a gran voce per la città, dicendo: « Chiunque ha zelo per la legge, e vuol mantener l'alleanza [con Dio], mi segua ».	27 Then Mattathias went through the town, shouting at the top of his voice, 'Let everyone who has anyzeal for the Law and takes his stand on the covenant come out and follow me.'
28 E fuggi egli ed i figli suoi per i monti, lasciando tutto quel che avevano in città.	28 Then he fled with his sons into the hills, leaving al their possessions behind in the town.
29 Allora, molti che amavano la legge e la giustizia andarono nel deserto;	29 Many people who were concerned for virtue and justice went down to the desert and stayed there,
30 e vi si stabilirono, essi, i loro figli, le mogli, ed i bestiami, per fuggire i mali che su loro si riversavano.	30 taking with them their sons, their wives and their cattle, so oppressive had their sufferings become.
31 E fu annunziato al ministri del re, ed all'esercito che era in Gerusalemme città di David come alcuni uomini, dopo avere sprezzato il comando del re, si erano rifugiati nei nascondigli del deserto, e molti li avevan seguiti.	31 Word was brought to the royal officials and forces stationed in Jerusalem, in the City of David, thatthose who had repudiated the king's edict had gone down to the hiding places in the desert.
32 Subito marciarono contro a loro, e si prepararono a dar loro battaglia, un giorno di sabato.	32 A strong detachment went after them, and when it came up with them ranged itself against them inbattle formation, preparing to attack them on the Sabbath day,
33 E dissero loro: « Volete resistere ancora? Uscite, e fate secondo l’ordine del re Antioco ed avrete salva la vita».	33 and said, 'Enough of this! Come out and do as the king orders and you will be spared.'
34 Ma quelli risposero: « Non usciremo, nè faremo la volontà del re violando il giorno di sabato ».	34 The others, however, replied, 'We refuse to come out, and we wil not obey the king's orders andprofane the Sabbath day.'
35 Allora gli altri attaccaron battaglia assalendoli ;	35 The royal forces at once went into action,
36 ma quelli non si difesero, e non scagliarono pure una pietra contro di loro, nè vollero chiudere gli aditi a' loro nascondigli,	36 but the others offered no opposition; not a stone was thrown, there was no barricading of the hidingplaces.
37 dlcendo: « Moriamo tutti nella nostra fedeltà, ed il cielo e la terra saran testimoni che ingiustamente ci avete fatti morire ».	37 They only said, 'Let us all die innocent; let heaven and earth bear witness that you are massacring uswith no pretence of justice.'
38 Li assalirono dunque in giorno di sabato, e quelli morirono, essi, le mogli, i figli e gli animali, sino a mille persone.	38 The attack was pressed home on the Sabbath itself, and they were slaughtered, with their wives andchildren and cattle, to the number of one thousand persons.
39 Quando Matatia ed i suoi amici seppero ciò, li piansero molto,	39 When the news reached Mattathias and his friends, they mourned them bitterly
40 e si dissero uno all'altro: «Se tutti faremo come han fatto questi nostri fratelli, e non cl batteremo col pagani per difendere le nostre vite e le nostre leggi, quelli faran presto a sterminarci di sulla terra».	40 and said to one another, 'If we al do as our brothers have done, and refuse to fight the gentiles for ourlives and institutions, they wil only destroy us the sooner from the earth.'
41 Perciò In quel giorno fecero questo patto: « Venga chiunque ad assalirai in giorno di sabato, e noi combatteremo con lui, e non morremo tutti come son morti i nostri fratelli nelle caverne ».	41 So then and there they came to this decision, 'If anyone attacks us on the Sabbath day, whoever hemay be, we shall resist him; we must not al be kil ed, as our brothers were in the hiding places.'
42 Allora ad essi s'aggiunse il partito degli Asidei, del forti in Israele, pronti a difesa della legge.	42 Soon they were joined by the Hasidaean party, stout fighting men of Israel, each one a volunteer onthe side of the Law.
43 E tutti quelli che fuggivano le ingruenti calamità s'uniron con loro, e ne accrebbero le forze.	43 Al the refugees from the persecution ral ied to them, giving them added support.
44 Messo Insieme un esercito, colpirono con ira i peccatori, e gl'iniqui con indignazione, e quelli che scamparono si salvarono con la fuga presso le genti.	44 They organised themselves into an armed force, striking down the sinners in their anger, and therenegades in their fury, and those who escaped them fled to the gentiles for safety.
45 E Matatia ed i suol amici andarono attorno, a distrugger le are,	45 Mattathias and his friends made a tour, overthrowing the altars
46 a circoncidere i fanciulli non circoncisi, quanti ne trovarono ne' confini d'Israele, con gran fermezza ;	46 and forcibly circumcising al the boys they found uncircumcised in the territories of Israel.
47 e perseguitavano i prepotenti, tutto riuscendo loro felicemente,	47 They hunted down the upstarts and managed their campaign to good effect.
48 riscattando la legge dalle mani del gentili e del re, e non lasciarono prosperare il peccatore.	48 They wrested the Law out of the control of the gentiles and the kings and reduced the sinners toimpotence.
49 Poi, si avvicinò per Matatia il tempo di morire, e disse a' suoi figli: « Ora, prevale la superbia, ed è tempo di castigo, di ruina, di collera e d'indignazione.	49 As the days of Mattathias were drawing to a close, he said to his sons, 'Arrogance and outrage arenow in the ascendant; it is a period of turmoil and bitter hatred.
50 Perciò, figliuoli, siate zelanti della legge, date la vita per l’alleanza de’ padri vostri [con Dio] ;	50 This is the time, my children, for you to have a burning zeal for the Law and to give your lives for thecovenant of our ancestors.
51 ricordate le opere che i padri vostri fecero a' loro tempi, e ne ricaverete gran gloria, e fama eterna.	51 Remember the deeds performed by our ancestors, each in his generation, and you wil win greathonour and everlasting renown.
52 Abramo, nella sua gran prova, non si mostrò egli fedele, e gli fu ciò imputato a giustizia?	52 Was not Abraham tested and found faithful, was that not considered as justifying him?
53 Giuseppe, nel tempo della sua angoscia, serbò fede ai comandamenti, e divenne signore dell'Egitto.	53 Joseph in the time of his distress maintained the Law, and so became lord of Egypt.
54 Finees nostro padre, per aver zelato l’onore di Dio, ebbe per patto il sacerdozio perpetuo.	54 Phinehas, our father, in return for his burning zeal, received the covenant of everlasting priesthood.
55 Giosuè, adempiendo l’ordine [di Dio] fu fatto condottiero d'Israele.	55 Joshua, for carrying out his task, became judge of Israel.
56 Caleb, attestando il vero dinanzi all’assemblea, ricevè in premio un’eredità.	56 Caleb, for his testimony before the assembled people, received an inheritance in the land.
57 Davide per la sua pietà, s’acquistò un trono nel secoli.	57 David for his generous heart inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom.
58 Elia, zelante dell’onor della legge, fu accolto in cielo.	58 Elijah for his consuming fervour for the Law was caught up to heaven itself.
59 Anania, Azaria e Misael, fedeli, furon liberati di tra le fiamme.	59 Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael, for their fidelity, were saved from the flame.
60 Daniele, per la sua rettitudine, fu liberato dalle zanne dei leoni.	60 Daniel for his singleness of heart was rescued from the lion's jaws.
61 E così ripensate, generazione per generazione, [e vedrete] che tutti quelli che sperano in Dio non vengon mal meno.	61 Know then that, generation after generation, no one who hopes in him will be overcome.
62 E non temete le parole d’un uomo peccatore, poiché la sua gloria non è che sterco e putredine;	62 Do not fear the threats of the sinner, al his brave show must come to the dunghill and the worms.
63 oggi è esaltato, e domani più non si trova, perchè sarà ritornato in polvere, ed i suoi pensieri andranno dispersi.	63 Exalted today, tomorrow he is nowhere to be found, for he has returned to the dust he came from andhis scheming is brought to nothing.
64 Voi dunque, figliuoli, state forti, ed agite virilmente a prò della legge, perchè per essa voi diverrete gloriosi.	64 My children, be resolute and courageous for the Law, for it wil bring you glory.
65 Ed ecco, io so che Simone vostro fratello è uomo di senno; ascoltatelo sempre, e vi farà da padre.	65 'Here is your brother Simeon, I know he is a man of sound judgement. Listen to him al your lives; lethim take your father's place.
66 Giuda Maccabeo poi, forte e valente sino da giovane, sia capo del vostro esercito, e condurrà egli il popolo alla guerra.	66 Judas Maccabaeus, strong and brave from his youth, let him be your general and conduct the waragainst the gentiles.
67 Chiamate a seguirvi tutti gli osservanti della legge; fate vendetta del vostro popolo,	67 The rest of you are to enrol in your ranks al those who keep the Law, and to assure the vengeance ofyour people.
68 date ai Gentili quel che si meritano, e state attenti a’ precetti della legge ».	68 Pay back the gentiles to the ful , and hold fast to the ordinance of the Law.'
69 Indi li benedisse, e poi andò a riunirsi co’ padri suoi.	69 Then he blessed them and was joined to his ancestors.
70 Morì l’anno centoquarantasei, e dai suoi figli fu deposto sul sepolcro dei padri suoi in Modin, e tutto Israele lo pianse amaramente.	70 He died in the year 146 and was buried in his ancestral tomb at Modein, and al Israel mourned himdeeply.
