BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Due anni dopo, il Faraone ebbe un sogno. Gli parve d'esser sulla riva del fiume,	1 Two years later it happened that Pharaoh had a dream: there he was, standing by the Nile,
2 dal quale uscivano sette vacche belle, straordinariamente grasse, che pascevano negli acquitrini;	2 and there, coming up from the Nile, were seven cows, sleek and fat, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.
3 altre sette venivano fuori dal fiume, brutte e sfinite per magrezza, che pascevano sulla riva stessa del fiume tra l'erba;	3 And then seven other cows, wretched and lean, came up from the Nile, behind them; and these wentover and stood beside the other cows on the bank of the Nile.
4 queste divorarono quelle di tanto bell'aspetto e floridezza. Il Faraone si svegliò;	4 The wretched and lean cows ate the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.
5 poi si riaddormentò, ed ebbe un altro sogno. Sette spighe germogliavano su un solo stelo, piene e bellissime;	5 He fel asleep and dreamed a second time: there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, fulland ripe.
6 ed altrettante spighe nascevano, stente, bruciate dal vento,	6 And then sprouting up, behind them, came seven ears of grain, meagre and scorched by the eastwind.
7 che divoravano le prime tanto belle. Svegliatosi il Faraone dal sonno,	7 The scanty ears of grain swal owed the seven ful and ripe ears of grain. Then Pharaoh woke up; ithad been a dream.
8 al mattino, pieno di spavento mandò a chiamare tutti gl'indovini ed i savi dell'Egitto, e raccontò a loro il suo sogno; ma non v'era chi lo spiegasse.	8 In the morning Pharaoh, feeling disturbed, had all the magicians and wise men of Egypt summoned tohim. Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was no one to interpret it for Pharaoh.
9 Allora finalmente il capo coppiere si ricordò, e disse: «Confesso il mio fallo.	9 Then the chief cup-bearer addressed Pharaoh, 'Today, I recal having been at fault.
10 Sdegnato il re coi suoi servi, fece chiudere me ed il capo panettiere nella carcere del capo delle milizie.	10 When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, he put myself and the chief baker in custody in thehouse of the commander of the guard.
11 Ivi in una stessa notte avemmo ambedue un sogno, in presagio dell'avvenire.	11 We had a dream on the same night, he and I, and each man's dream had a meaning for himself.
12 V'era lì un giovine ebreo, servo dello stesso capo delle milizie, ed avendogli raccontato i sogni,	12 There was a young Hebrew with us, one of the slaves belonging to the commander of the guard. Wetold our dreams to him and he interpreted them for us, tel ing each of us what his dream meant.
13 udimmo da lui dirci quello che poi gli eventi avverarono; io infatti fui rimesso al mio ufficio, e l'altro fu appeso al patibolo».	13 It turned out exactly according to his interpretation: I was restored to my position, but the other manwas hanged.'
14 Subito, al comando del re, Giuseppe fu condotto fuori del carcere; e raso, e mutategli le vesti, fu presentato al re,	14 Then Pharaoh had Joseph summoned, and they hurried him from the dungeon. He shaved andchanged his clothes, and presented himself before Pharaoh.
15 che gli disse: «Ho avuto dei sogni, nè v'è chi li spieghi, mentre ho udito che tu sei sapientissimo nell'interpretarli».	15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I have had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard itsaid of you that you can interpret a dream the instant you hear it.'
16 Rispose Giuseppe: «Senza bisogno di me, Dio risponderà cose liete pel Faraone».	16 'Not I,' Joseph replied to Pharaoh, 'God wil give Pharaoh a favourable answer.'
17 Allora il re raccontò quel che aveva veduto: «Mi pareva d'esser sulla riva del fiume;	17 So Pharaoh told Joseph, 'In my dream there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile.
18 ne uscivan sette vacche straordinariamente belle e grasse, che pascevano l'erba negli acquitrini.	18 And there were seven cows, fat and sleek, coming up out of the Nile, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.
19 Ed ecco ne venivan dietro altre sette, così brutte e magre come non ne ho mai viste nella terra di Egitto,	19 And then seven other cows came up, behind them, starved, very wretched and lean; I have neverseen such poor cows in all Egypt.
20 le quali divorarono e consumarono le prime,	20 The lean and wretched cows ate up the first seven fat cows.
21 senza dar segno alcuno d'esser sazie; che anzi, restarono della stessa magrezza e sfinimento. Svegliatomi, fui ripreso dal sonno,	21 But when they had eaten them up, it was impossible to tel they had eaten them, for they looked aswretched as ever. Then I woke up.
22 ed ebbi un altro sogno. Sette spighe germogliavano da un unico stelo, piene e bellissime;	22 And then again in my dream, there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, beautiful y ripe;
23 altre sette nascevano da un gambo, vuote e bruciate dal vento.	23 but then sprouting up behind them came seven ears of grain, withered, meagre and scorched by theeast wind.
24 che divorarono le prime sì belle. Ho raccontato il sogno agl'indovini, e non v'è chi lo spieghi».	24 Then the shrivel ed ears of grain swal owed the seven ripe ears of grain. I have told the magicians,but no one has given me the answer.'
25 Rispose Giuseppe: «Il sogno del re è tutt'uno; Iddio ha mostrato al Faraone quel che sta per fare.	25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, 'Pharaoh's dreams are one and the same: God has revealed to Pharaohwhat he is going to do.
26 Le sette vacche grasse e le sette spighe piene sono sette anni di abbondanza, ed hanno nel sogno lo stesso significato.	26 The seven fine cows are seven years and the seven ripe ears of grain are seven years; it is one andthe same dream.
27 Le sette vacche magre e macilente che uscirono dal fiume dopo le prime, e le sette spighe vuote e bruciate dal vento, sono sette anni di successiva fame.	27 The seven gaunt and lean cows coming up behind them are seven years, as are the seven shrivel edears of grain scorched by the east wind: there wil be seven years of famine.
28 Le cose andranno così.	28 It is as I have told Pharaoh: God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is going to do.
29 Ecco, verranno in tutta la terra d'Egitto sette anni di straordinaria fertilità;	29 Seven years are coming, bringing great plenty to the whole of Egypt,
30 a questi terran dietro altri sette anni di tanta sterilità, da far dimenticare tutta la passata abbondanza; la fame invero starà per consumare tutta la terra,	30 but seven years of famine will fol ow them, when al the plenty in Egypt wil be forgotten, and faminewil exhaust the land.
31 e l'immensità della carestia starà per annullare l'immensità dell'abbondanza.	31 The famine that is to fol ow wil be so very severe that no one wil remember what plenty the countryused to enjoy.
32 L'aver tu visto due volte un sogno riferentesi allo stesso fatto, è segno di certezza che la parola di Dio s'avvererà, e presto.	32 The reason why Pharaoh had the same dream twice is that the event is already determined by God,and God wil shortly bring it about.
33 Or dunque elegga il re un uomo savio ed accorto, e lo preponga a tutto l'Egitto;	33 'Pharaoh should now find someone intel igent and wise to govern Egypt.
34 questi poi stabilisca degli ufficiali per tutte le province, e la quinta parte del raccolto dei sette anni di fertilità,	34 Pharaoh should take action and appoint supervisors for the country, and impose a tax of one-fifth onEgypt during the seven years of plenty.
35 che ora stanno per cominciare, raccolga in granai; tutto il grano sia serrato e conservato nelle città agli ordini del Faraone,	35 They wil col ect al the food produced during these good years that are coming, and store the grainunder Pharaoh's authority, putting it in the towns and keeping it.
36 in previsione della futura fame di sette anni che affliggerà l'Egitto; così, la regione non sarà consumata dalla fame». Giuseppe vicerè d'Egitto	36 This food wil form a reserve for the country against the seven years of famine which are coming onEgypt, so that the country wil not be destroyed by the famine.'
37 Piacque il suggerimento al Faraone ed a tutti i suoi ministri;	37 Pharaoh and all his ministers approved of what he had said.
38 e disse loro: «Potremo noi trovare un altro uomo così pieno dello spirito di Dio?».	38 Then Pharaoh asked his ministers, 'Can we find anyone else endowed with the spirit of God, likehim?'
39 Disse dunque a Giuseppe: «Giacchè il Signore ti ha manifestato tutto quel che ci hai detto, potrò io forse trovare uno più saggio, o anche simile a te?	39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Since God has given you knowledge of al this, there can be no one asintelligent and wise as you.
40 Tu sarai il capo della mia casa, ed ai tuoi comandi tutto il popolo ubbidirà; io non avrò in più di te, altro che il trono».	40 You shall be my chancel or, and al my people shall respect your orders; only this throne shal set meabove you.'
41 Disse ancora il Faraone a Giuseppe: «Ecco, io ti dò autorità su tutto l'Egitto».	41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I hereby make you governor of the whole of Egypt.'
42 Si cavò di mano l'anello, e lo mise in mano a lui; lo fece vestire d'una veste di bisso, e mettergli al collo una collana d'oro.	42 Pharaoh took the ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's. He dressed him in robes of fine linen andput a gold chain round his neck.
43 Quindi lo fece salire sul secondo de' suoi cocchi; ed un araldo gridava che tutti innanzi a lui piegassero il ginocchio, e seppero che egli era stato preposto al governo di tutto l'Egitto.	43 He made him ride in the best chariot he had after his own, and they shouted 'Abrek!' ahead of him.Thus he became governor of the whole of Egypt.
44 Disse ancora il re a Giuseppe: «Io sono il Faraone. Senza tuo ordine, nessuno moverà mano o piede in tutto l'Egitto».	44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Although I am Pharaoh, no one is to move hand or foot without yourpermission throughout Egypt.'
45 Poi gli cambiò nome, e lo chiamò in lingua egiziana Salvatore del mondo. E gli diede in moglie Asenet, figlia di Putifare sacerdote d'Eliopoli. Giuseppe pertanto uscì a visitare l'Egitto.	45 Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-Paneah, and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest ofOn, to be his wife. And Joseph began to journey al over Egypt.
46 (era di trent'anni quando comparve davanti al re Faraone), e percorse tutte le province dell'Egitto.	46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. After leavingPharaoh's presence, Joseph travel ed throughout the length and breadth of Egypt.
47 Venne la fertilità di sette anni, e le mèssi raccolte in manipoli furono ammassate nei granai d'Egitto.	47 During the seven years of plenty, the soil yielded generously.
48 Tutto il di più delle raccolte fu serbato nelle singole città.	48 He col ected al the food of the seven years while there was an abundance in Egypt, and stored thefood in the towns, placing in each the food from the surrounding countryside.
49 Tanta fu l'abbondanza del grano da paragonarsi all'arena del mare, e la quantità eccedeva ogni misura.	49 Joseph gathered in grain like the sand of the sea, in such quantity that he gave up keeping count,since it was past accounting.
50 Prima che venisse la fame, nacquero a Giuseppe due figli, partoritigli da Asenet, figlia di Putifare sacerdote di Eliopoli.	50 Before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph: Asenath daughter of Potiphera,priest of On, bore him these.
51 Al primogenito mise nome Manasse, dicendo: «Iddio m'ha fatto dimenticare tutti i miei travagli, e la casa del padre mio».	51 Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me completely forget myhardships and my father's House.'
52 Al secondo mise nome Efraim, dicendo: «Iddio m'ha fatto prosperare nella terra ov'ero stato povero».	52 He named the second Ephraim, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me fruitful in the country of mymisfortune.'
53 Passati poi i sette anni d'abbondanza ch'erano stati in Egitto,	53 Then the seven years of plenty that there had been in Egypt came to an end,
54 cominciarono i sette anni di carestia predetti da Giuseppe, e la fame fu grande in tutte le regioni; ma in tutto l'Egitto v'era il pane.	54 and the seven years of famine set in, as Joseph had predicted. There was famine in every country,but throughout Egypt there was food.
55 Quando ivi pure fu fame, il popolo gridò al Faraone chiedendo da mangiare. Ed egli rispose: «Ricorrete a Giuseppe, e fate tutto quello che vi dirà».	55 But when al Egypt too began to feel the famine and the people appealed to Pharaoh for food,Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, 'Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.'
56 Ora la fame cresceva ogni giorno in tutta la terra; e Giuseppe fece aprire tutti i granai, e vendere grano agli Egiziani, che erano essi pure tormentati dalla fame.	56 There was famine all over the world. Then Joseph opened al the granaries and rationed out grain tothe Egyptians, as the famine grew even worse in Egypt.
57 Da tutte le parti venivano in Egitto per comprare cibi, e rimediare al malanno della carestia.	57 People came to Egypt from al over the world to get supplies from Joseph, for the famine had grownsevere throughout the world.
