1 I Filistei, catturata l’arca di Dio, la portarono da Eben-Ezer ad Asdod.	1 When the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
2 I Filistei poi presero l’arca di Dio, la introdussero nel tempio di Dagon e la collocarono a fianco di Dagon.	2 Taking the ark of God, the Philistines put it in the temple of Dagon, setting it down beside Dagon.
3 Il giorno dopo i cittadini di Asdod si alzarono, ed ecco che Dagon era caduto con la faccia a terra davanti all’arca del Signore; essi presero Dagon e lo rimisero al suo posto.	3 When the people of Ashdod got up the fol owing morning and went to the temple of Dagon, there layDagon face down on the ground before the ark of Yahweh. They picked Dagon up and put him back in his place.
4 Si alzarono il giorno dopo di buon mattino, ed ecco che Dagon era caduto con la faccia a terra davanti all’arca del Signore, mentre la testa di Dagon e le palme delle mani giacevano staccate sulla soglia; il resto di Dagon era intero.	4 But when they got up on the fol owing morning, there lay Dagon face down on the ground before the arkof Yahweh, and Dagon's head and two hands lay severed on the threshold; only the trunk of Dagon was left inits place.
5 Per questo i sacerdoti di Dagon e quanti entrano nel tempio di Dagon ad Asdod non calpestano la soglia di Dagon ancora oggi.	5 This is why the priests of Dagon and the people frequenting Dagon's temple never step on Dagon'sthreshold in Ashdod, even today.
6 Allora incominciò a pesare la mano del Signore sugli abitanti di Asdod, li devastò e li colpì con bubboni, Asdod e il suo territorio.	6 Yahweh oppressed the people of Ashdod; he ravaged them and afflicted them with tumours -- Ashdodand its territory. When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening they said,
7 I cittadini di Asdod, vedendo che le cose si mettevano in tal modo, dissero: «Non rimanga con noi l’arca del Dio d’Israele, perché la sua mano è dura contro di noi e contro Dagon, nostro dio!».	7 'The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, for he is oppressing us and our god Dagon.'
8 Allora, fatti radunare presso di loro tutti i prìncipi dei Filistei, dissero: «Che dobbiamo fare dell’arca del Dio d’Israele?». Risposero: «Si porti a Gat l’arca del Dio d’Israele». E portarono via l’arca del Dio d’Israele.	8 So they summoned al the Philistine chiefs to them, and said, 'What shal we do with the ark of the Godof Israel?' They decided, 'The ark of the God of Israel shal be taken away to Gath.' So they took the ark of theGod of Israel to Gath.
9 Ma ecco, dopo che l’ebbero portata via, la mano del Signore fu sulla città e un terrore molto grande colpì gli abitanti della città, dal più piccolo al più grande, e scoppiarono loro dei bubboni.	9 But after they had taken it there, Yahweh oppressed that town and a great panic broke out; afflicting thepeople of the town from highest to lowest, he brought them out in tumours too.
10 Allora mandarono l’arca di Dio a Ekron; ma all’arrivo dell’arca di Dio a Ekron, i cittadini protestarono: «Mi hanno portato qui l’arca del Dio d’Israele, per far morire me e il mio popolo!».	10 They then sent the ark of God to Ekron, but when it came to Ekron the Ekronites shouted, 'They havebrought me the ark of the God of Israel to kil me and my people!'
11 Fatti perciò radunare tutti i prìncipi dei Filistei, dissero: «Mandate via l’arca del Dio d’Israele! Ritorni alla sua sede e non faccia morire me e il mio popolo». Infatti si era diffuso un terrore mortale in tutta la città, perché la mano di Dio era molto pesante.	11 They summoned al the Philistine chiefs and said, 'Send the ark of the God of Israel away; let it goback to where it belongs and not kill me and my people' -- for there was mortal panic throughout the town; Godwas oppressing them.
12 Quelli che non morivano erano colpiti da bubboni, e il gemito della città saliva al cielo.	12 The people who did not die were afflicted with tumours, and the wailing from the town rose to the sky.
