| 1 Davide pensò: «Certo, un giorno o l’altro sarò tolto di mezzo per mano di Saul. Non ho miglior via d’uscita che cercare scampo nella terra dei Filistei; Saul rinuncerà a ricercarmi in tutto il territorio d’Israele e sfuggirò alle sue mani». | 1 And David said in his heart, "I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul; there is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines; then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand." |
| 2 Così Davide si alzò e si portò, con i seicento uomini che aveva con sé, presso Achis, figlio di Maoc, re di Gat. | 2 So David arose and went over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. |
| 3 Davide rimase presso Achis a Gat, lui e i suoi uomini, ciascuno con la famiglia; Davide con le due mogli, Achinòam di Izreèl e Abigàil, già moglie di Nabal di Carmel. | 3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, and David with his two wives, Ahino-am of Jezreel, and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal's widow. |
4 Fu riferito a Saul che Davide era fuggito a Gat e non lo cercò più.
| 4 And when it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he sought for him no more. |
| 5 Davide disse ad Achis: «Se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, mi sia concesso un luogo in una città della campagna dove io possa abitare. Perché dovrà stare il tuo servo presso di te nella tua città regale?». | 5 Then David said to Achish, "If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be given me in one of the country towns, that I may dwell there; for why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?" |
| 6 E Achis quello stesso giorno gli diede Siklag. Per questo Siklag è rimasta ai re di Giuda fino ad oggi. | 6 So that day Achish gave him Ziklag; therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. |
| 7 La durata del soggiorno di Davide nella campagna dei Filistei fu di un anno e quattro mesi. | 7 And the number of the days that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months. |
| 8 Davide e i suoi uomini partivano a fare razzie contro i Ghesuriti, i Ghirziti e gli Amaleciti: questi abitano da sempre il territorio che si estende in direzione di Sur fino alla terra d’Egitto. | 8 Now David and his men went up, and made raids upon the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites; for these were the inhabitants of the land from of old, as far as Shur, to the land of Egypt. |
| 9 Davide batteva quel territorio e non lasciava in vita né uomo né donna; prendeva greggi e armenti, asini e cammelli e vesti, poi tornava indietro e andava da Achis. | 9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, but took away the sheep, the oxen, the asses, the camels, and the garments, and came back to Achish. |
| 10 Quando Achis chiedeva: «Dove avete fatto razzie oggi?», Davide rispondeva: «Contro il Negheb di Giuda, contro il Negheb degli Ieracmeeliti, contro il Negheb dei Keniti». | 10 When Achish asked, "Against whom have you made a raid today?" David would say, "Against the Negeb of Judah," or "Against the Negeb of the Jerahmeelites," or, "Against the Negeb of the Kenites." |
| 11 Davide non lasciava in vita né uomo né donna da portare a Gat, pensando: «Non vorrei che riferissero contro di noi: “Così ha fatto Davide”». Tale fu la sua norma finché dimorò nella campagna dei Filistei. | 11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, thinking, "Lest they should tell about us, and say, So David has done.'" Such was his custom all the while he dwelt in the country of the Philistines. |
| 12 Achis si fidò di Davide, pensando: «Si è proprio reso odioso al suo popolo, Israele, e così sarà per sempre mio servo». | 12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, "He has made himself utterly abhorred by his people Israel; therefore he shall be my servant always." |
