1 Mentre Apollo era a Corinto, Paolo, attraversate le regioni dell’altopiano, scese a Èfeso. Qui trovò alcuni discepoli	1 It happened that while Apol os was in Corinth, Paul made his way overland as far as Ephesus, wherehe found a number of disciples.
2 e disse loro: «Avete ricevuto lo Spirito Santo quando siete venuti alla fede?». Gli risposero: «Non abbiamo nemmeno sentito dire che esista uno Spirito Santo».	2 When he asked, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?' they answered, 'No, wewere never even told there was such a thing as a Holy Spirit.'
3 Ed egli disse: «Quale battesimo avete ricevuto?». «Il battesimo di Giovanni», risposero.	3 He asked, 'Then how were you baptised?' They replied, 'With John's baptism.'
4 Disse allora Paolo: «Giovanni battezzò con un battesimo di conversione, dicendo al popolo di credere in colui che sarebbe venuto dopo di lui, cioè in Gesù».	4 Paul said, 'John's baptism was a baptism of repentance; but he insisted that the people should believein the one who was to come after him -- namely Jesus.'
5 Udito questo, si fecero battezzare nel nome del Signore Gesù	5 When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus,
6 e, non appena Paolo ebbe imposto loro le mani, discese su di loro lo Spirito Santo e si misero a parlare in lingue e a profetare.	6 and the moment Paul had laid hands on them the Holy Spirit came down on them, and they began tospeak with tongues and to prophesy.
7 Erano in tutto circa dodici uomini.	7 There were about twelve of these men in al .
8 Entrato poi nella sinagoga, vi poté parlare liberamente per tre mesi, discutendo e cercando di persuadere gli ascoltatori di ciò che riguarda il regno di Dio.	8 He began by going to the synagogue, where he spoke out fearlessly and argued persuasively aboutthe kingdom of God. He did this for three months,
9 Ma, poiché alcuni si ostinavano e si rifiutavano di credere, dicendo male in pubblico di questa Via, si allontanò da loro, separò i discepoli e continuò a discutere ogni giorno nella scuola di Tiranno.	9 till the attitude of some of the congregation hardened into unbelief. As soon as they began attackingthe Way in public, he broke with them and took his disciples apart to hold daily discussions in the lecture room ofTyrannus.
10 Questo durò per due anni, e così tutti gli abitanti della provincia d’Asia, Giudei e Greci, poterono ascoltare la parola del Signore.	10 This went on for two years, with the result that al the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, wereable to hear the word of the Lord.
11 Dio intanto operava prodigi non comuni per mano di Paolo,	11 So remarkable were the miracles worked by God at Paul's hands
12 al punto che mettevano sopra i malati fazzoletti o grembiuli che erano stati a contatto con lui e le malattie cessavano e gli spiriti cattivi fuggivano.	12 that handkerchiefs or aprons which had touched him were taken to the sick, and they were cured oftheir il nesses, and the evil spirits came out of them.
13 Alcuni Giudei, che erano esorcisti itineranti, provarono anch’essi a invocare il nome del Signore Gesù sopra quanti avevano spiriti cattivi, dicendo: «Vi scongiuro per quel Gesù che Paolo predica!».	13 But some itinerant Jewish exorcists too tried pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus over peoplewho were possessed by evil spirits; they used to say, 'I adjure you by the Jesus whose spokesman is Paul.'
14 Così facevano i sette figli di un certo Sceva, uno dei capi dei sacerdoti, giudeo.	14 Among those who did this were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest.
15 Ma lo spirito cattivo rispose loro: «Conosco Gesù e so chi è Paolo, ma voi chi siete?».	15 The evil spirit replied, 'Jesus I recognise, and Paul I know, but who are you?'
16 E l’uomo che aveva lo spirito cattivo si scagliò su di loro, ebbe il sopravvento su tutti e li trattò con tale violenza che essi fuggirono da quella casa nudi e coperti di ferite.	16 and the man with the evil spirit hurled himself at them and overpowered first one and then another,and handled them so violently that they fled from that house stripped of clothing and badly mauled.
17 Il fatto fu risaputo da tutti i Giudei e i Greci che abitavano a Èfeso e tutti furono presi da timore, e il nome del Signore Gesù veniva glorificato.	17 Everybody in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks, heard about this episode; everyone was fil ed withawe, and the name of the Lord Jesus came to be held in great honour.
18 Molti di quelli che avevano abbracciato la fede venivano a confessare in pubblico le loro pratiche di magia	18 Some believers, too, came forward to admit in detail how they had used spel s
19 e un numero considerevole di persone, che avevano esercitato arti magiche, portavano i propri libri e li bruciavano davanti a tutti. Ne fu calcolato il valore complessivo e si trovò che era di cinquantamila monete d’argento.	19 and a number of them who had practised magic col ected their books and made a bonfire of them inpublic. The value of these was calculated to be fifty thousand silver pieces.
20 Così la parola del Signore cresceva con vigore e si rafforzava.	20 In this powerful way the word of the Lord spread more and more widely and successful y.
21 Dopo questi fatti, Paolo decise nello Spirito di attraversare la Macedonia e l’Acaia e di recarsi a Gerusalemme, dicendo: «Dopo essere stato là, devo vedere anche Roma».	21 When al this was over Paul made up his mind to go back to Jerusalem through Macedonia andAchaia. 'After I have been there,' he said, 'I must go on to see Rome as wel .'
22 Inviati allora in Macedonia due dei suoi aiutanti, Timòteo ed Erasto, si trattenne ancora un po’ di tempo nella provincia di Asia.	22 So he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, ahead of him to Macedonia, while he remainedfor a time in Asia.
23 Fu verso quel tempo che scoppiò un grande tumulto riguardo a questa Via.	23 It was during this time that a serious disturbance broke out in connection with the Way.
24 Un tale, di nome Demetrio, che era òrafo e fabbricava tempietti di Artèmide in argento, procurando in tal modo non poco guadagno agli artigiani,	24 A silversmith cal ed Demetrius, who provided work for a large number of craftsmen making silvershrines of Diana,
25 li radunò insieme a quanti lavoravano a questo genere di oggetti e disse: «Uomini, voi sapete che da questa attività proviene il nostro benessere;	25 cal ed a general meeting of them with others in the same trade. 'As you know,' he said, 'it is on thisindustry that we depend for our prosperity.
26 ora, potete osservare e sentire come questo Paolo abbia convinto e fuorviato molta gente, non solo di Èfeso, ma si può dire di tutta l’Asia, affermando che non sono dèi quelli fabbricati da mani d’uomo.	26 Now you must have seen and heard how, not just in Ephesus but nearly everywhere in Asia, this manPaul has persuaded and converted a great number of people with his argument that gods made by hand are notgods at all.
27 Non soltanto c’è il pericolo che la nostra categoria cada in discredito, ma anche che il santuario della grande dea Artèmide non sia stimato più nulla e venga distrutta la grandezza di colei che tutta l’Asia e il mondo intero venerano».	27 This threatens not only to discredit our trade, but also to reduce the sanctuary of the great goddessDiana to unimportance. It could end up by taking away the prestige of a goddess venerated al over Asia, andindeed al over the world.'
28 All’udire ciò, furono pieni di collera e si misero a gridare: «Grande è l’Artèmide degli Efesini!».	28 This speech roused them to fury, and they started to shout, 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians!'
29 La città fu tutta in agitazione e si precipitarono in massa nel teatro, trascinando con sé i Macèdoni Gaio e Aristarco, compagni di viaggio di Paolo.	29 The whole town was fil ed with the uproar and the mob made a concerted rush to the theatre,dragging along two of Paul's Macedonian travelling companions, Gaius and Aristarchus.
30 Paolo voleva presentarsi alla folla, ma i discepoli non glielo permisero.	30 Paul wanted to make an appeal to the people, but the disciples refused to let him;
31 Anche alcuni dei funzionari imperiali, che gli erano amici, mandarono a pregarlo di non avventurarsi nel teatro.	31 in fact, some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent messages urging him not to take the riskof going into the theatre.
32 Intanto, chi gridava una cosa, chi un’altra; l’assemblea era agitata e i più non sapevano il motivo per cui erano accorsi.	32 By now everybody was shouting different things, til the assembly itself had no idea what was goingon; most of them did not even know why they had gathered together.
33 Alcuni della folla fecero intervenire un certo Alessandro, che i Giudei avevano spinto avanti, e Alessandro, fatto cenno con la mano, voleva tenere un discorso di difesa davanti all’assemblea.	33 Some of the crowd prevailed upon Alexander, whom the Jews pushed forward; he raised his hand forsilence with the intention of explaining things to the people.
34 Appena s’accorsero che era giudeo, si misero tutti a gridare in coro per quasi due ore: «Grande è l’Artèmide degli Efesini!».	34 As soon as they realised he was a Jew, they all started shouting in unison, 'Great is Diana of theEphesians!' and they kept this up for two hours.
35 Ma il cancelliere della città calmò la folla e disse: «Abitanti di Èfeso, chi fra gli uomini non sa che la città di Èfeso è custode del tempio della grande Artèmide e della sua statua caduta dal cielo?	35 When the town clerk eventual y succeeded in calming the crowd, he said, 'Citizens of Ephesus! Isthere anybody who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is the guardian of the temple of great Diana andof her statue that fell from heaven?
36 Poiché questi fatti sono incontestabili, è necessario che stiate calmi e non compiate gesti inconsulti.	36 Nobody can contradict this and there is no need for you to get excited or do anything rash.
37 Voi avete condotto qui questi uomini, che non hanno profanato il tempio né hanno bestemmiato la nostra dea.	37 These men you have brought here are not guilty of any sacrilege or blasphemy against our goddess.
38 Perciò, se Demetrio e gli artigiani che sono con lui hanno delle ragioni da far valere contro qualcuno, esistono per questo i tribunali e vi sono i proconsoli: si citino in giudizio l’un l’altro.	38 If Demetrius and the craftsmen he has with him want to complain about anyone, there are the assizesand the proconsuls; let them take the case to court.
39 Se poi desiderate qualche altra cosa, si deciderà nell’assemblea legittima.	39 And if you want to ask any more questions you must raise them in the regular assembly.
40 C’è infatti il rischio di essere accusati di sedizione per l’accaduto di oggi, non essendoci alcun motivo con cui possiamo giustificare questo assembramento». Detto questo, sciolse l’assemblea.	40 We could easily be charged with rioting for today's happenings: there is no ground for it al , and wecan give no justification for this gathering.' When he had finished this speech he dismissed the assembly.
