(He had previously become king of Greece.) |
| 2 Egli intraprese molte guerre, si impadronì di fortezze e uccise i re della regione. | 2 He fought many battles, conquered strongholds, and put to death the kings of the earth. |
| 3 Egli raggiunse l’estremità della terra, depredò una quantità di nazioni finché la terra non ammutolì davanti a lui, mentre il suo cuore si esaltò e si insuperbì. | 3 He advanced to the ends of the earth, and plundered many nations. When the earth became quiet before him, he was exalted, and his heart was lifted up. |
| 4 Egli radunò un esercito fortissimo e ridusse in suo potere regioni, nazioni e re, che divennero suoi tributari. | 4 He gathered a very strong army and ruled over countries, nations, and princes, and they became tributary to him. |
| 5 Infine, cadde ammalato e capì di essere vicino alla morte. | 5 After this he fell sick and perceived that he was dying. |
| 6 Convocò i suoi ufficiali, i nobili che erano stati educati con lui fino dalla giovinezza e divise fra di loro il regno, mentre era ancora in vita. | 6 So he summoned his most honored officers, who had been brought up with him from youth, and divided his kingdom among them while he was still alive. |

| 11 In quei giorni sorsero in Israele uomini iniqui che persuasero molti dicendo: «Andiamo e concludiamo un patto con le nazioni che ci circondano; perché da quando ci siamo separati da esse molti mali sono piombati su di noi». | 11 In those days lawless men came forth from Israel, and misled many, saying, "Let us go and make a covenant with the Gentiles round about us, for since we separated from them many evils have come upon us." |
| 12 Il discorso parve buono ai loro occhi. | 12 This proposal pleased them, |
| 13 Alcuni del popolo si fecero premura di andare dal re e questi concesse loro la facoltà di seguire le usanze dei Gentili. | 13 and some of the people eagerly went to the king. He authorized them to observe the ordinances of the Gentiles. |
| 14 Essi costruirono un ginnasio a Gerusalemme secondo l’uso dei Gentili, | 14 So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem, according to Gentile custom, |
| 15 si fecero i prepuzi e si allontanarono dalla santa alleanza. Si aggiogarono ai Gentili e si vendettero per compiere il male. | 15 and removed the marks of circumcision, and abandoned the holy covenant. They joined with the Gentiles and sold themselves to do evil. |
| 16 Ora, quando il suo regno apparve ben consolidato, Antioco decise di impadronirsi dell’Egitto per regnare su due regni. | 16 When Antiochus saw that his kingdom was established, he determined to become king of the land of Egypt, that he might reign over both kingdoms. |
| 17 Egli entrò in Egitto con un grande esercito, con carri ed elefanti, con cavalleria e con una numerosa flotta. | 17 So he invaded Egypt with a strong force, with chariots and elephants and cavalry and with a large fleet. |
| 18 Attaccò battaglia con Tolomeo, re dell’Egitto; | 18 He engaged Ptolemy king of Egypt in battle, and Ptolemy turned and fled before him, and many were wounded and fell. |
| 19 Così egli si impadronì delle roccheforti dell’Egitto e depredò la terra d’Egitto. | 19 And they captured the fortified cities in the land of Egypt, and he plundered the land of Egypt. |
| 20 Dopo aver vinto l’Egitto, Antioco tornò indietro nell’anno 143 e avanzò contro Israele e Gerusalemme con un grande esercito. | 20 After subduing Egypt, Antiochus returned in the one hundred and forty-third year. * He went up against Israel and came to Jerusalem with a strong force. |
| 21 Entrò con insolenza nel santuario e prese l’altare d’oro, il candelabro della luce e tutte le suppellettili; | 21 He arrogantly entered the sanctuary and took the golden altar, the lampstand for the light, and all its utensils. |
| 22 la mensa della presenza, i vasi per le libazioni, le tazze, le scodelle d’oro, il velo, le corone e tutti gli ornamenti in oro, che erano sulla facciata del tempio, asportandone tutte le lamine. | 22 He took also the table for the bread of the Presence, the cups for drink offerings, the bowls, the golden censers, the curtain, the crowns, and the gold decoration on the front of the temple; he stripped it all off. |
| 23 Egli prese l’argento, l’oro e le suppellettili preziose, prese anche i tesori nascosti che riuscì a trovare. | 23 He took the silver and the gold, and the costly vessels; he took also the hidden treasures which he found. |
| 24 Dopo aver preso tutto, fece ritorno nella sua terra. Egli aveva fatto una strage di uomini e parlato con molta arroganza. | 24 Taking them all, he departed to his own land. He committed deeds of murder, and spoke with great arrogance. |
| 25 Ci fu allora un gran lutto in Israele, in ogni suo luogo. | 25 Israel mourned deeply in every community, |
| 26 Gemettero capi e anziani, vergini e giovani perdettero ogni vigore svanì la bellezza delle donne. | 26 rulers and elders groaned, maidens and young men became faint, the beauty of women faded. |
| 27 Ogni sposo intonò un lamento, nel talamo nuziale fu in angoscia la sposa. | 27 Every bridegroom took up the lament; she who sat in the bridal chamber was mourning. |
| 28 La terra si commosse a causa dei suoi abitanti e tutta la casa di Giacobbe si coprì di confusione. | 28 Even the land shook for its inhabitants, and all the house of Jacob was clothed with shame. |
| 29 Dopo due anni, il re mandò nelle città di Giuda il sovrintendente ai tributi. Costui venne a Gerusalemme con numeroso esercito | 29 Two years later the king sent to the cities of Judah a chief collector of tribute, and he came to Jerusalem with a large force. |
| 30 e pronunciò con inganno parole di pace agli abitanti ed essi gli credettero. All’improvviso, però, irruppe nella città e la colpì duramente, uccidendo molta gente in Israele. | 30 Deceitfully he spoke peaceable words to them, and they believed him; but he suddenly fell upon the city, dealt it a severe blow, and destroyed many people of Israel. |
| 31 Depredata la città, egli la diede alle fiamme, ne abbatté le case e le mura di cinta. | 31 He plundered the city, burned it with fire, and tore down its houses and its surrounding walls. |
| 32 Condussero in schiavitù le donne con i bambini e si impadronirono del bestiame. | 32 And they took captive the women and children, and seized the cattle. |
| 33 Essi fortificarono la città di David con un muro grande e solido e con torri solide, trasformandola in una loro fortezza. | 33 Then they fortified the city of David with a great strong wall and strong towers, and it became their citadel. |
| 34 Vi stabilirono gente peccatrice, uomini iniqui, che vi si rafforzarono. | 34 And they stationed there a sinful people, lawless men. These strengthened their position; |
| 35 Vi collocarono armi e vettovaglie e vi depositarono il bottino di Gerusalemme. Costoro divennero come un gran laccio. | 35 they stored up arms and food, and collecting the spoils of Jerusalem they stored them there, and became a great snare. |
| 36 Fu un’insidia per il santuario e un avversario irriducibilmente malefico per Israele. | 36 It became an ambush against the sanctuary, an evil adversary of Israel continually. |
| 37 Essi versarono sangue innocente intorno al santuario e contaminarono i luoghi santi. | 37 On every side of the sanctuary they shed innocent blood; they even defiled the sanctuary. |
| 38 Per causa loro fuggirono gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, e questa divenne una colonia di stranieri. Essa diventò straniera ai suoi figli, i suoi figli la abbandonarono. | 38 Because of them the residents of Jerusalem fled; she became a dwelling of strangers; she became strange to her offspring, and her children forsook her. |

| 40 Grande come la sua gloria di una volta fu la sua ignominia, la sua magnificenza si cambiò in lutto. | 40 Her dishonor now grew as great as her glory; her exaltation was turned into mourning. |
| 41 Il re, poi, scrisse a tutto il regno, dichiarando che tutti dovevano formare un solo popolo, | 41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people, |
| 42 che ognuno doveva abbandonare le proprie usanze. Tutte le nazioni si adattarono all’ordine del re. | 42 and that each should give up his customs. |
| 43 Anche molti in Israele furono favorevoli al suo culto, sacrificarono agli idoli e profanarono il sabato. | 43 All the Gentiles accepted the command of the king. Many even from Israel gladly adopted his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath. |
| 44 Il re mandò, per mezzo dei corrieri, lettere a Gerusalemme e nelle città di Giuda, ordinando di seguire usi estranei al paese, | 44 And the king sent letters by messengers to Jerusalem and the cities of Judah; he directed them to follow customs strange to the land, |
| 45 di cessare gli olocausti, i sacrifici e le libazioni nel santuario e di profanare i sabati e le feste, | 45 to forbid burnt offerings and sacrifices and drink offerings in the sanctuary, to profane sabbaths and feasts, |
| 46 di contaminare il santuario e i luoghi santi, | 46 to defile the sanctuary and the priests, |
| 47 di edificare altari, recinti e tempietti per gli idoli e di sacrificare porci e animali immondi, | 47 to build altars and sacred precincts and shrines for idols, to sacrifice swine and unclean animals, |
| 48 di lasciare i figli incirconcisi e di macchiarsi di ogni immondezza e profanazione, | 48 and to leave their sons uncircumcised. They were to make themselves abominable by everything unclean and profane, |
| 49 così da dimenticare la legge e cambiare tutte le tradizioni. | 49 so that they should forget the law and change all the ordinances. |
| 50 Chiunque non si fosse conformato all’editto del re sarebbe stato condannato a morte. | 50 "And whoever does not obey the command of the king shall die." |
| 51 In questi termini egli scrisse a tutto il regno, costituì ispettori sopra tutto il popolo e ordinò alle città di Giuda di offrire sacrifici città per città. | 51 In such words he wrote to his whole kingdom. And he appointed inspectors over all the people and commanded the cities of Judah to offer sacrifice, city by city. |
| 52 Molti del popolo, cioè quanti avevano abbandonato la legge, si uniformarono a essi e commisero del male nel paese. | 52 Many of the people, every one who forsook the law, joined them, and they did evil in the land; |
| 53 Costoro costrinsero il popolo di Israele a vivere in nascondigli, in ogni rifugio. | 53 they drove Israel into hiding in every place of refuge they had. |
| 54 Il 15 di Casleu dell’anno 145, Antioco costruì l’abominio della desolazione sull’altare ed edificò are nelle città di Giuda all’intorno. | 54 Now on the fifteenth day of Chislev, in the one hundred and forty-fifth year, * they erected a desolating sacrilege upon the altar of burnt offering. They also built altars in the surrounding cities of Judah, |
| 55 Sulle porte delle case e nelle piazze offrivano incenso; | 55 and burned incense at the doors of the houses and in the streets. |
| 56 facevano a pezzi e bruciavano i libri della legge, che riuscivano a trovare. | 56 The books of the law which they found they tore to pieces and burned with fire. |
| 57 L’editto del re condannava a morte colui presso il quale si trovava il libro dell’alleanza e chi osservava la legge. | 57 Where the book of the covenant was found in the possession of any one, or if any one adhered to the law, the decree of the king condemned him to death. |
| 58 Agivano con la forza contro gli Israeliti che, mese per mese, venivano scoperti nelle città; | 58 They kept using violence against Israel, against those found month after month in the cities. |
| 59 e il 25 del mese sacrificavano sopra l’ara, che era nel luogo dei sacrifici. | 59 And on the twenty-fifth day of the month they offered sacrifice on the altar which was upon the altar of burnt offering. |
| 60 Condannarono a morte, secondo l’ordine, le donne che avevano circonciso i figli, | 60 According to the decree, they put to death the women who had their children circumcised, |
| 61 con i bambini sospesi al collo, insieme con i familiari e con coloro che avevano praticato la circoncisione. | 61 and their families and those who circumcised them; and they hung the infants from their mothers' necks. |
| 62 Tuttavia molti in Israele non perdettero coraggio; costoro decisero generosamente, insieme, di non mangiare cibi immondi. | 62 But many in Israel stood firm and were resolved in their hearts not to eat unclean food. |
| 63 Essi preferirono morire pur di non contaminarsi con cibi proibiti e di non profanare la santa alleanza; così morirono. | 63 They chose to die rather than to be defiled by food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. |
| 64 Grandissima fu l'ira sopra Israele. | 64 And very great wrath came upon Israel. |
