| 1 Allora Salomone esclamò: « Jahve ha voluto abitare nella densa nube! | 1 Then Solomon said: The Lord promised that he would dwell in a cloud. |
| 2 Perciò io ti ho edificato una dimora eccelsa, un luogo per la tua residenza eterna! ». | 2 But I have built a house to his name, that he might dwell there for ever. |
| 3 Quindi il re voltò la faccia e benedisse l’intera assemblea di Israele, che stava in piedi, | 3 And the king turned his face, and blessed all the multitude of Israel (for all the multitude stood attentive) and he said: |
| 4 e cominciò: « Benedetto Jahve Dio di Israele, la cui mano ha compiuto ciò che la sua bocca aveva promesso a David mio padre dicendo: | 4 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, who hath accomplished in deed that which he spoke to David my father, saying: |
| 5 “ Da quando ho fatto uscire il mio popolo dalla terra Egitto non ho scelto alcuna città fra tutte le tribù di Israele per edificare una casa, dove abiti il mio nome; neppure ho scelto alcun uomo, perchè divenga principe del mio popolo Israele. | 5 From the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel, for a house to be built in it to my name: neither chose I any other man, to be the ruler of my people Israel. |
| 6 Ho scelto però Gerusalemme perchè vi abiti il mio nome, e ho scelto David perchè fosse capo del mio popolo Israele ”. | 6 But I chose Jerusalem, that my name might be there: and I chose David to set him over my people Israel. |
| 7 Ora David mio padre aveva in animo di edificare una casa al nome di Jahve, Dio di Israele. | 7 And whereas David my father had a mind to build a house to the name of the Lord the God of Israel, |
| 8 Jahve però gli ha detto: “ Buona è l’intenzione, che hai nel cuore, di edificare una casa al mio nome; | 8 The Lord said to him: Forasmuch as it was thy will to build a house to my name, thou hast done well indeed in having such a will: |
| 9 tuttavia tu non edificherai la casa, ma il figlio che uscirà dai tuoi lombi edificherà la casa al mio nome ”. | 9 But thou shalt not build the house, but thy son, who shall come out of thy loins, he shall build a house to my name. |
| 10 Jahve ha dunque compiuto la promessa che aveva pronunciato: io sono successo a David mio padre; mi sono seduto sul trono di Israele, come Fibre aveva detto, e ho edificato la casa al nome di Jahve, Dio di Israele, | 10 The Lord therefore hath accomplished his word which he spoke: and I am risen up in the place of David my father, and sit upon the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised : and have built a house to the name of the Lord God of Israel. |
| 11 dove ho collocato l’arca, dove c’è l’alleanza che Jahve ha sancito con i figli di Israele ». | 11 And I have put in it the ark, wherein is the covenant of the Lord, which he made with the children of Israel. |
| 12 Poi, stando in piedi davanti all’altare di Jahve, di fronte a tutta l’assemblea di Israele, stese le mani. | 12 And he stood before the altar of the I Lord, in presence of all the multitude of Israel, and stretched forth his hands. |
| 13 Salomone aveva costruito una tribuna di bronzo e l’aveva posta in mezzo all’atrio. Essa era lunga cinque cubiti, larga cinque e alta tre. Egli poi vi era salito in piedi e, prostratosi sulle ginocchia, al cospetto di tutta l'assemblea di Israele, stendendo le mani verso il cielo, | 13 For Solomon had made a brazen scaffold, and had set it in the midst of the temple, which was five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high: and he stood upon it: then kneeling down in the presence of all the multitude of Israel, and lifting up his hands towards heaven, |
| 14 proseguì: « Jahve Dio di Israele non c’è nessun dio come te, nè in cielo nè in terra! Tu conservi l’alleanza e la benevolenza verso i servitori, camminano innanzi a te con tutto il cuore; | 14 He said: O Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee in heaven nor in earth: who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts: |
| 15 che hai mantenuto la promessa, che hai fatto a David tu tuo servitore, mio padre! Si, la tua mano ha oggi compiuto ciò che la tua bocca aveva proferito. | 15 Who hast performed to thy servant David my father all that thou hast promised him: and hast accomplished in fact, what thou hast spoken with thy mouth, as also the present time proveth. |
| 16 Ora, Jahve Dio di Israele, mantieni al tuo servitore David, mio padre, anche a questa promessa: « Non sarà eliminato davanti a me nessuno dei tuoi che siederà sul trono di Israele, purchè i tuoi figli conservino la loro via camminando nella mia legge, come tu hai camminato al mio cospetto ”. | 16 Now then, O Lord God of Israel, fulfil to thy servant David my father, whatsoever thou hast promised him, saying: There shall not fail thee a man in my sight, to sit upon the throne of Israel: yet so that thy children take heed to their ways, and walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me. |
| 17 Orsù, dunque, Jahve Dio di Israele, si avveri la promessa che hai fatto al tuo servitore David! | 17 And now, Lord God of Israel, let thy word be established which thou hast spoken to thy servant David. |
| 18 Ma davvero Dio abita con l'uomo -sulla terra? Ecco il cielo e il cielo del cielo non ti contengono; quanto meno questa casa che ho edificato! | 18 Is it credible then that God should dwell with men on the earth? If heaven and the heavens of heavens do not contain thee, how much less this house, which I have built? |
| 19 Volgiti propizio, o Jahve mio Dio, alla preghiera e alla supplica del tuo servitore e ascolta il grido di preghiera che il tuo servitore solleva innanzi a te. | 19 But to this end only it is made, that thou mayest regard the prayer of thy servant and his supplication, O Lord my God: and mayest hear the prayers which thy servant poureth out before thee. |
| 20 Fa’ che i tuoi occhi siano aperti su questa casa giorno e notte, sul luogo dove tu hai voluto porre il tuo nome; così tu ascolterai la preghiera che ti rivolge il tuo servitore in questo luogo. | 20 That thou mayest open thy eyes upon this house day and night, upon the place wherein thou hast promised that thy name should be called upon, |
| 21 Tu udrai certamente le suppliche del tuo servitore e del tuo popolo Israele, quando ti pregheranno in questo luogo. Tu allora, udendo dal luogo della tua abitazione, ascolta e perdona! | 21 And that thou wouldst hear the prayer which thy servant prayeth in it: hearken then to the prayers of thy servant, and of thy people Israel. Whosoever shall pray in this place, hear thou from thy dwelling place, that is, from heaven, and shew mercy. |
| 22 Se qualcuno avrà peccato contro il suo prossimo e, perchè gli fu imposto un giuramento di maledizione, si presenterà innanzi al tuo altare per giurare, | 22 If any man sin against his neighbour, and come to swear against him, and bind himself with a curse before the altar in this house: |
| 23 tu ascolta dal cielo e fa’ giustizia con i tuoi servitori, in modo da condannare l’empio e far ricadere sul suo capo il suo misfatto e dichiarare giusto l’innocente, rendendogli secondo la sua innocenza. | 23 Then hear thou from heaven, and do justice to thy servants, so as to requite the wicked by making his wickedness fall upon his own head, and to revenge the just, rewarding him according to his justice. |
| 24 Quando il tuo popolo, battuto dal nemico perchè ha peccato contro di te, farà ritorno e loderà il tuo nome, ti pregherà e supplicherà innanzi a te, in questo tempio, | 24 If thy people Israel be overcome by their enemies, (for they will sin against thee,) and being converted shall do penance, and call upon thy name, and pray to thee in this place, |
| 25 tu ascolta dal cielo e perdona il peccato del tuo popolo Israele e riportalo sul suolo che hai concesso a loro e ai loro padri. | 25 Then hear thou from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them back into the land, which thou gavest to them, and their fathers. |
| 26 Quando il cielo sarà chiuso e senza pioggia, perchè hanno peccato contro di te, ma essi ti pregheranno in questo luogo, celebreranno il tuo nome e, spinti dal tuo castigo, abbandoneranno i peccati, | 26 If the heavens be shut up, and there fall no rain by reason of the sine of the people, and they shall pray to thee in this place, and confess to thy name, and be converted from their sins, when thou dost afflict them, |
| 27 tu ascolta dal cielo, perdona il peccato dei tuoi servitori e del tuo popolo Israele, insegnando loro la buona via per cui dovranno camminare, e concedi la pioggia sulla terra che hai concesso in eredità al tuo popolo. | 27 Then hear thou from heaven, O Lord, and forgive the sine of thy servants and of thy people Israel, and teach them the good way, in which they may walk: and give rain to thy land which thou hast given to thy people to possess. |
| 28 Quando la carestia, la peste, il carbonchio, la ruggine, le locuste e i bruchi piomberanno sul paese, mentre il suo nemico stringerà d’assedio una delle sue porte o scoppierà un flagello e un epidemia qualsiasi, | 28 If a famine arise in the land, or a pestilence or blasting, or mildew, or locusts, or caterpillars: or if their enemies waste the country, and besiege the cities, whatsoever scourge or infirmity shall be upon them: |
| 29 se uno qualunque e l’intero tuo popolo Israele innalzerà una preghiera o una supplica, conscio della propria afflizione e del Proprio dolore, e stenderà le palme verso questo tempio, | 29 Then if any of thy people Israel, knowing his own scourge and infirmity shall pray, and shall spread forth his hands in this house, |
| 30 tu ascolta dal cielo, luogo della tua dimora, perdona e da’ a ciascuno secondo le sue azioni, tu che ne conosci il cuore! A te solo infatti è noto il cuore dei figli dell’uomo. | 30 Hear thou from heaven, from thy high dwelling place, and forgive, and render to every one according to his ways, which thou knowest him to have in his heart: (for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:) |
| 31 Così essi ti temeranno e cammineranno per le tue vie, finchè rimarranno vivi sulla faccia della terra che tu hai concesso ai nostri padri. | 31 That they may fear thee, and walk in thy ways all the days that they live upon the face of the land, which thou hast given to our fathers. |
| 32 Perfino lo straniero, che non appartiene al tuo popolo Israele, quando verrà da una terra lontana a causa del tuo grande nome, della tua mano potente e del tuo braccio teso; quando verrà per pregare in questa casa, | 32 If the stranger also, who is not of thy people Israel, come from a far country, for the sake of thy great name, and thy strong hand, and thy stretched out arm, and adore in this place: |
| 33 tu ascolta dal cielo, dal luogo della tua dimora, e concedi quanto lo straniero ti chiederà; così tutti i popoli della terra conosceranno il tuo nome, ti temeranno come il tuo popolo Israele e sapranno che il tuo nome è stato invocato su questo tempio che io ho edificato. | 33 Hear thou from heaven thy firm dwelling place, and do all that which that stranger shall call upon thee for: that all the people of the earth may know thy name, and may fear thee, as thy people Israel, and may know, that thy name is invoked upon this house, which I have built. |
| 34 Se il tuo popolo entrerà in guerra con i suoi nemici, seguendo la via per cui tu lo hai inviato, e ti rivolgerà una preghiera in direzione di questa città che tu hai scelto e del tempio, che io ho edificato al tuo nome, | 34 If thy people go out to war against their enemies, by the way that thou shalt send them, and adore thee towards the way of this city, which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built to thy name: |
| 35 tu ascolta dal cielo la sua preghiera e la sua supplica e fagli giustizia. | 35 Then hear thou from heaven their prayers, and their supplications, and revenge them. |
| 36 Se peccheranno contro di te — non c’è infatti uomo che non pecchi — e tu, adirato contro di loro, li avrai dati in potere del nemico, e così i loro deportatori li deporteranno in un paese, lontano o vicino; | 36 And if they sin against thee (for there is no man that sinneth not) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them up to their enemies, and they lead them away captive to a land either afar off, or near at hand, |
| 37 qualora rientreranno in se stessi nella terra della deportazione e, convertendosi, ti supplicheranno nel paese della deportazione, esclamando: “ Abbiamo peccato, abbiamo agito iniquamente, abbiamo operato da empi!” | 37 And if they be converted in their heart in the land to which they were led / captive, and do penance, and pray to thee in the land of their captivity, saying: We have sinned, we have done wickedly, we have dealt unjustly: |
| 38 e così, ritornando a te, con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, nella terra nella quale furono deportati, pregheranno rivolti alla patria che tu hai concesso ai loro padri; alla città, che hai scelto, e al tempio, che io ho edificato al tuo nome, | 38 And return to thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their captivity, to which they were led away, and adore thee towards the way of their own land which thou gavest their fathers, and of the city, which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built to thy name: |
| 39 tu ascolta dal cielo, luogo della tua dimora, la loro preghiera e le loro suppliche, fa loro giustizia e perdona al tuo popolo che ha peccato contro di te. | 39 Then hear thou from heaven, that is, from thy firm dwelling place, their prayers, and do judgment, and forgive thy people, although they have sinned: |
| 40 Ora, mio Dio, i tuoi occhi siano aperti e le tue orecchie attente alla preghiera in questo luogo. | 40 For thou art my God: let thy eyes, I beseech thee, be open, and let thy ears be attentive to the prayer, that is made in this place. |
| 41 Orsù dunque, Jahve Dio, muovi verso il luogo del tuo riposo, tu € la tua arca potente! I tuoi sacerdoti, Jahve Dio, si ammantino di vittoria. I tuoi fedeli esultino felici. | 41 Now therefore arise, O Lord God, into thy resting place, thou and the ark of thy strength: let thy priests, O Lord God, put on salvation, and thy saints rejoice in good things. |
| 42 Jahve Dio, non disdegnare la presenza del tuo unto; rammenta a mio favore le grazie che hai concesso a David tuo servitore! ». | 42 O Lord God, turn not away the face of thy anointed: remember the mercies of David thy servant. |
