| 1 L’anno decimoottavo del re Geroboamo, Abia divenne re di Giuda. | 1 Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah. |
| 2 Egli regnò tre anni a Gerusalemme; sua madre si chiamava Maacha figlia di Uriel, da Gabaa. Ci fu però guerra fra Abia e Geroboamo. | 2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. |
| 3 Abia intraprese la guerra con un esercito di prodi guerrieri: quattrocentomila uomini scelti; d’altra parte Geroboamo gli contrappose in linea di battaglia ottocentomila uomini scelti e valorosi. | 3 And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour. |
| 4 Allora Abia, in piedi sulla cima del monte Zemaraim, che è sulla montagna di Efraim, si mise a gridare: « Geroboamo e tutto Israele, ascoltatemi! | 4 And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel; |
| 5 Non sapete che Jahve Dio di Israele ha concesso il regno di Israele a David per sempre, a lui cioè e ai suoi figli come con un’alleanza conclusa con il sale? | 5 Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? |
| 6 Però Geroboamo figlio di Nabat e servitore di Salomone, figlio di David, è insorto e si è ribellato al suo signore. | 6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord. |
| 7 Accanto a lui si raccolse gente fatua, buona a nulla, la quale prevalse su Roboamo figlio di Salomone, mentre questi era ancora giovane, poco coraggioso e non si mostrò forte abbastanza di fronte a loro. | 7 And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them. |
| 8 Ora voi pensate di resistere dinanzi al regno di Jahve in mano ai figli di David, perchè voi siete una grande moltitudine e avete con voi i vitelli d’oro che Geroboamo vi ha costruito perchè fossero vostro dio? | 8 And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods. |
| 9 Non avete voi forse cacciato i sacerdoti di Jahve figli di Aronne e i Leviti, e non avete costituito sacerdoti per voi come i popoli degli altri paesi? Chiunque si presenta con un giovane toro e con sette montoni per farsi investire, diventa sacerdote di chi non è dio! | 9 Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods. |
| 10 Ma Jahve è nostro Dio e noi non lo abbiamo abbandonato! I sacerdoti, che servono Jahve, sono figli di Aronne, mentre quelli occupati nel ministero sono i Leviti. | 10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business: |
| 11 Essi offrono a Jahve ogni mattino e ogni sera olocausti, profumi d’incenso, il pane della presenza sulla tavola pura e hanno cura del candelabro d’oro con le lampade che accendono: ogni sera. Noi infatti siamo fedeli al servizio di Jahve nostro Dio, mentre voi lo avete abbandonato. | 11 And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him. |
| 12 Ed ecco, noi abbiamo alla testa Dio e i suoi sacerdoti, con le trombe sonore per farle squillare contro di voi. Figli di Israele, non combattete contro Jahve Dio dei vostri padri, perchè non avreste nessun successo!». | 12 And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper. |
| 13 Geroboamo però ordinò una manovra di aggiramento alle truppe che erano in agguato. per coglierli alle spalle; così egli si trovò di fronte a Giuda, mentre l'agguato stava di dietro. | 13 But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them. |
| 14 Quando quelli di Giuda si voltarono, ecco incombere loro la battaglia di fronte e di dietro. Perciò lanciarono un grido di aiuto a Jahve e i sacerdoti suonarono le trombe. | 14 And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. |
| 15 Gli uomini di Giuda lanciarono. il grido di guerra e, mentre questi gridavano, Dio colpì Geroboamo e tutto Israele innanzi ad Abia e a Giuda. | 15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. |
| 16 I figli di Israele fuggirono di fronte a Giuda e Dio li consegnò nelle sue mani. | 16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand. |
| 17 Abia con l’esercito inflisse loro una grave sconfitta; di Israele caddero trafitti ben cinquecentomila uomini scelti. | 17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men. |
| 18 Così i figli di Israele in quella occasione furono umiliati, mentre i figli di Giuda prevalsero, poichè avevano posto fiducia in Jahve Dio dei loro padri. | 18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers. |
| 19 Abia quindi inseguì Geroboamo e gli tolse queste città: Bethel con le dipendenze, Jeshana con le dipendenze ed Efron con le dipendenze. | 19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with the towns thereof, and Jeshnah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof. |
| 20 Geroboamo, durante la vita di Abia, non potè più rimettersi in forze; in seguito fu colpito da Jahve e morì. | 20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died. |
| 21 Abia invece si rafforzò; prese quattordici mogli e generò ventidue figli e sedici figlie. | 21 But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters. |
| 22 Il resto degli atti di Abia, la sua condotta e le sue parole sono cose scritte nel trattato del profeta Iddo. | 22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo. |
| 23 Abia si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto nella: città di David. Asa suo figlio regnò al suo posto. | |
