NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et die tertio nuptiae factae sunt in Cana Galilaeae, et erat mater Iesuibi;1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there,
vocatus est autem et Iesus et discipuli eius ad nuptias.2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited.
Et deficientevino, dicit mater Iesu ad eum: “ Vinum non habent ”.3 And they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the feast had al been used, and the mother ofJesus said to him, 'They have no wine.'
Nondum venit hora mea ”.4 Jesus said, 'Woman, what do you want from me? My hour has not come yet.'
Dicit mater eiusministris: “ Quodcumque dixerit vobis, facite ”.
His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.'
Erant autem ibi lapideae hydriae sex positae secundum purificationemIudaeorum, capientes singulae metretas binas vel ternas.6 There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among theJews: each could hold twenty or thirty gal ons.
Dicit eis Iesus: “Implete hydrias aqua ”. Et impleverunt eas usque ad summum.7 Jesus said to the servants, 'Fil the jars with water,' and they fil ed them to the brim.
Et dicit eis:“ Haurite nunc et ferte architriclino ”. Illi autem tulerunt.8 Then he said to them, 'Draw some out now and take it to the president of the feast.'
Ut autemgustavit architriclinus aquam vinum factam et non sciebat unde esset, ministriautem sciebant, qui haurierant aquam, vocat sponsum architriclinus9 They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it camefrom -- though the servants who had drawn the water knew -- the president of the feast cal ed the bridegroom
et dicitei: “ Omnis homo primum bonum vinum ponit et, cum inebriati fuerint, id quoddeterius est; tu servasti bonum vinum usque adhuc ”.10 and said, 'Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are wel wined; butyou have kept the best wine til now.'
This was the first of Jesus' signs: it was at Cana in Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciplesbelieved in him.
After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, but theystayed there only a few days.
Et prope erat Pascha Iudaeorum, et ascendit Hierosolymam Iesus.13 When the time of the Jewish Passover was near Jesus went up to Jerusalem,
Et invenitin templo vendentes boves et oves et columbas, et nummularios sedentes;14 and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and doves, and the money changerssitting there.
etcum fecisset flagellum de funiculis, omnes eiecit de templo, oves quoque etboves, et nummulariorum effudit aes et mensas subvertit;15 Making a whip out of cord, he drove them al out of the Temple, sheep and cattle as wel , scattered themoney changers' coins, knocked their tables over
et his, qui columbasvendebant, dixit: “ Auferte ista hinc! Nolite facere domum Patris mei domumnegotiationis ”.16 and said to the dove sel ers, 'Take all this out of here and stop using my Father's house as a market.'
Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: I am eaten up with zeal for your house.
”.18 The Jews intervened and said, 'What sign can you show us that you should act like this?'
Respondit Iesus et dixit eis:“ Solvite templum hoc, et in tribus diebus excitabo illud ”.19 Jesus answered, 'Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up.'
”.20 The Jews replied, 'It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple: are you going to raise it up again inthree days?'
Ille autem dicebat de templo corporissui.21 But he was speaking of the Temple that was his body,
and when Jesus rose from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believedthe scripture and what he had said.
During his stay in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover many believed in his name when they sawthe signs that he did,
Ipse autem Iesus noncredebat semetipsum eis, eo quod ipse nosset omnes,24 but Jesus knew al people and did not trust himself to them;
he never needed evidence about anyone; he could tell what someone had within.
