NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Fortis in bello Iesus filius Nun,
successor Moysi in prophetis,
qui fuit secundum nomen suum
1 Mighty in war was Joshua son of Nun, successor to Moses in the prophetic office, who well deservedhis name, and was a great saviour of the chosen people, wreaking vengeance on the enemies who opposedhim, and so bringing Israel into its inheritance.
2 maximus in salutem electorum Dei,
qui vindicet in insurgentes hostes,
ut heredem faciat Israel.
2 How splendid he was when, arms uplifted, he brandished his sword against cities!
3 Quam gloriam adeptus est in tollendo manus suas
et iactando contra civitatem acinacem!
3 Who had ever shown such determination as his? He himself led the battles of the Lord.
4 Quis ante illum restitit?
Nam bella Domini ipse perduxit.
4 Was not the sun held back by his hand, and one day drawn out into two?
5 An non in manu eius impeditus est sol,
et una dies facta est quasi duo?
5 He called on the Most High, the Mighty One, while pressing the enemies from all directions, and thegreat Lord answered him with hard and violent hailstones.
6 Invocavit Altissimum potentem
in oppugnando inimicos undique;
et audivit illum magnus Dominus
in saxis grandinis virtutis valde fortis.
6 He fel on that enemy nation, and at the Descent destroyed al resistance to make the nationsacknowledge his warlike prowess and that he was waging war on behalf of the Lord.
7 Impetum fecit contra gentem hostilem
et in descensu perdidit contrarios,
7 For he was a fol ower of the Mighty One, in the time of Moses showing his devotion, he and Caleb sonof Jephunneh, by opposing the whole community, by preventing the people from sinning, and by silencing themutters of rebel ion.
8 ut cognoscant gentes armaturam eius,
quia contra Deum bellum eorum est:
etenim secutus est a tergo Potentis.
8 Hence these two alone were preserved out of six hundred thousand men on the march, and broughtinto their inheritance, into a land where milk and honey flow.
9 Et in diebus Moysi misericordiam fecit,
ipse et Chaleb filius Iephonne,
stare contra congregationem,
prohibere gentem a peccatis
et perfringere murmur malitiae.
9 And the Lord conferred strength on Caleb too, which stayed by him into old age, so that he could investthe highlands of the country which his descendants kept as their inheritance,
10 Ideo et ipsi duo liberati sunt
a numero sescentorum milium peditum,
ut inducerent illos in hereditatem,
in terram, quae manat lac et mel.
10 so that every Israelite might see that it is good to fol ow the Lord.
11 Et dedit Dominus ipsi Chaleb fortitudinem,
et usque in senectutem permansit illi,
ut ascenderet in excelsum terrae locum;
et semen ipsius obtinuit hereditatem,
11 The Judges too, each when he was cal ed, all men whose hearts were never disloyal, who neverturned their backs on the Lord -- may their memory be blessed!
12 ut viderent omnes filii Israel
quia bonum est obsequi Domino.
12 May their bones flourish again from the tomb, and may the names of those il ustrious men be worthilyborne by their sons!
13 Et iudices singuli suo nomine,
quorum non est corruptum cor,
qui non aversi sunt a Domino:
13 Samuel was the beloved of his Lord; prophet of the Lord, he instituted the kingdom, and anointedrulers over his people.
14 sit memoria illorum in benedictione, et ossa eorum pullulent de loco suo,
14 By the Law of the Lord he judged the assembly, and the Lord watched over Jacob.
15 et nomen eorum renovet
filiis illorum sanctorum virorum.
15 By his loyalty he was recognised as a prophet, by his words he was known to be a trustworthy seer.
16 Dilectus a Domino suo Samuel
propheta Domini instituit imperium
et unxit principes in gente sua.
16 He cal ed on the Lord, the Mighty One, when his enemies pressed in from all directions, by offering asucking lamb.
17 In lege Domini congregationem iudicavit,
et visitavit Deus Iacob,
et in fide sua probatus est propheta;
17 And the Lord thundered from heaven, and made his voice heard in a rolling peal;
18 et cognitus est in verbis suis fidelis in visione.
18 he massacred the leaders of the enemy, and all the rulers of the Philistines.
19 Et invocavit Dominum omnipotentem,
in oppugnando hostes circumstantes undique,
in oblatione agni lactentis.
19 Before the time of his everlasting rest he bore witness to the Lord and his anointed, 'Of no property,not even a pair of sandals, have I ever deprived a soul.' Nor did anyone accuse him.
20 Et intonuit de caelo Dominus
et in sonitu magno auditam fecit vocem suam
20 And, having fal en asleep, he prophesied again, warning the king of his end; he spoke from the depthsof the earth in prophecy, to blot out the wickedness of the people.
21 et contrivit principes Tyriorum
et omnes duces Philisthim.
22 Et ante tempus dormitionis aeternae
testimonium praebuit in conspectu Domini et christi eius:
“ Pecunias et usque ad calceamenta
ab omni carne non accepi ”;
et non accusavit illum homo.
23 Et, postquam dormivit, prophetavit
et notum fecit regi et ostendit illi finem vitae suae
et exaltavit vocem suam de terra in prophetia
ad delendam impietatem gentis.
