1 E mirato fissamente il sinedrio, disse Paolo: uomini fratelli, io con tutta buona coscienza mi son portato dinanzi a Dio fino a questo giorno.	1 Then Paul, gazing intently at the council, said, “Noble brothers, I have spoken with all good conscience before God, even to this present day.”
2 Ma il principe de' sacerdoti Anania ordinò a' circostanti, che lo percuotessero nella bocca.	2 And the high priest, Ananias, instructed those who were standing nearby to strike him on the mouth.
3 Allora Paolo gli disse; percuoterà te Iddio, muraglia imbiancata. E tu siedi a giudicarmi secondo la legge, e contro la legge ordini, che io sia percosso?	3 Then Paul said to him: “God shall strike you, you whitewashed wall! For would you sit and judge me according to the law, when, contrary to the law, you order me to be struck?”
4 Ma i circostanti dissero: tu oltraggi il sommo sacerdote di Dio?	4 And those who were standing nearby said, “Are you speaking evil about the high priest of God?”
5 E Paolo disse: fratelli, io non sapeva che egli è il Principe de' sacerdoti. Imperocché sta scritto: non oltraggiare il principe del popolo tuo.	5 And Paul said: “I did not know, brothers, that he is the high priest. For it is written: ‘You shall not speak evil of the leader of your people.’ ”
6 E sapendo Paolo, come una parte erano Sadducei, e l'altra Farisei, disse ad alta voce nel sinedrio: uomini fratelli, io son Fariseo, figliuolo di Farisei, sono chiamato in giudizio a cagione della speranza della risurrezione de' morti.	6 Now Paul, knowing that one group were Sadducees and the other were Pharisees, exclaimed in the council: “Noble brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees! It is over the hope and resurrection of the dead that I am being judged.”
7 E detto ch'egli ebbe questo nacque disparere tra i Farisei, e i Sadducei, e la moltitudine fu divisa.	7 And when he had said this, a dissension occurred between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. And the multitude was divided.
8 Imperocché i Sadducei dicono non esservi risurrezione, né Angelo, né Spirito: i Farisei poi confessano ambedue queste cose.	8 For the Sadducees claim that there is no resurrection, and neither angels, nor spirits. But the Pharisees confess both of these.
9 E vi furon de' clamori grandi. E alzatisi alcuni de' Farisei contendevano, dicendo: non troviamo male alcuno in quest'uomo: Chi sa, se uno spirito, o un Angelo gli abbia parlato?	9 Then there occurred a great clamor. And some of the Pharisees, rising up, were fighting, saying: “We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel?”
10 E suscitatasi una gran dissensione, temendo il tribuno, che Paolo non fosse da essi fatto in pezzi, ordinò, che scendesser i soldati, e lo traesser di mezzo a coloro, e lo conducessero agli alloggiamenti.	10 And since a great dissension had been made, the tribune, fearing that Paul might be torn apart by them, ordered the soldiers to descend and to seize him from their midst, and to bring him into the fortress.
11 E la notte seguente gli apparve il Signore, e disse: fatti animo: imperocché siccome hai renduto per me testimonianza in Gerusalemme, cosi fa d'uopo, che tu la renda anche in Roma.	11 Then, on the following night, the Lord stood near him and said: “Be constant. For just as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so also it is necessary for you to testify at Rome.”
12 E fattosi giorno si unirono alcuni de' Giudei, e anatematizzarono se stessi, dicendo: che non avrebber mangiato, nè bevuto, finché non avessero ucciso Paolo.	12 And when daylight arrived, some of the Jews gathered together and bound themselves with an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
13 Ed erano più di quaranta quelli, che aveano fatta questa congiura:	13 Now there were more than forty men who had taken this oath together.
14 I quali andaron dai principi de' sacerdoti, e dai seniori, e dissero: ci siam obbligati con anatema a non prender cibo, finché non ammazziamo Paolo.	14 And they approached the leaders of the priests, and the elders, and they said: “We have sworn ourselves by an oath, so that we will taste nothing, until we have killed Paul.
15 Ora dunque voi col sinedrio fate sapere al tribuno, che lo conduca alla vostra presenza, come se foste per iscoprir il qualche cosa di più sicuro intorno a lui. E noi prima che egli vi si accosti, siamo pronti a ucciderlo.	15 Therefore, with the council, you should now give notice to the tribune, so that he may bring him to you, as if you intended to determine something else about him. But before he approaches, we have made preparations to put him to death.”
16 Ma avendo un figliuolo della sorella di Paolo avuta notizia di queste insidie, andò, ed entrò negli alloggiamenti, e ne diede parte a Paolo.	16 But when Paul’s sister’s son had heard of this, about their treachery, he went and entered into the fortress, and he reported it to Paul.
17 E Paolo chiamalo a se uno de' centurioni, disse: conduci questo giovinetto al tribuno, perché ha qualche cosa a fargli sapere.	17 And Paul, calling to him one of the centurions, said: “Lead this young man to the tribune. For he has something to tell him.”
18 E quegli lo prese, e lo condusse al tribuno, e disse: quel Paolo, che è in catene, mi ha pregato di condurre a te questo giovinetto, il quale ha da dirti qualche cosa.	18 And indeed, he took him and led him to the tribune, and he said, “Paul, the prisoner, asked me to lead this young man to you, since he has something to say to you.”
19 Allora il tribuno presolo per mano, si tirò con esso in disparte, e lo interrogò: che è quello, che tu hai a farmi sapere?	19 Then the tribune, taking him by the hand, withdrew with him by themselves, and he asked him: “What is it that you have to tell me?”
20 E quegli disse: i Giudei si sono accordati a pregarti, che domane tu conduca Paolo al sinedrio, come per esaminarlo più diligentemente;	20 Then he said: “The Jews have met to ask you to bring Paul tomorrow to the council, as if they intended to question him about something else.
21 Ma tu non fare a modo loro: imperocché tendono insidie a lui più di quaranta uomini dei loro, i quali hanno anatematizzato se stessi, che non mangieranno, né berranno, sino a tanto che non l'abbiano ucciso: e adesso stanno preparati, aspettandosi, che tu loro il prometta.	21 But truly, you should not believe them, for they would ambush him with more than forty men from among them, who have bound themselves by an oath neither to eat, nor to drink, until they have put him to death. And they are now prepared, hoping for an affirmation from you.”
22 Il tribuno adunque rimandò il giovinetto, ordinandogli di non dire ad alcuno di avergli notificato tali cose.	22 And then the tribune dismissed the young man, instructing him not to tell anyone that he had made known these things to him.
23 E chiamati due centurioni, disse loro: mettete all'ordine dugento soldati, che vadano fino a Cesarea, e settanta cavalli, e dugento uomini armati di lancia per la terza ora della notte:	23 Then, having called two centurions, he said to them: “Prepare two hundred soldiers, so that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen, for the third hour of the night.
24 E preparate le cavalcature sulle quali salvo conducessero Paolo al preside Felice:	24 And prepare beasts of burden to carry Paul, so that they may lead him safely to Felix, the governor.”
25 (Imperocché ebbe timore, che forse i Giudei non lo involassero, e lo uccidessero, ed egli poi fosse calunniato, quasi avesse tirato al denaro),	25 For he was afraid, lest perhaps the Jews might seize him and kill him, and that afterwards he would be falsely accused, as if he had accepted a bribe. And so he wrote a letter containing the following:
26 E scrisse lettera di tal tenore Claudio Lisia a Felice ottimo preside, salute.	26 “Claudius Lysias, to the most excellent governor, Felix: greetings.
27 Quest'uomo preso da' Giudei, e vicino ad essere ucciso da essi, sopraggiunto io co' soldati lo liberai, avendo inteso com'egli è Romano:	27 This man, having been apprehended by the Jews and being about to be put to death by them, I rescued, overwhelming them with soldiers, since I realized that he is a Roman.
28 E volendo sapere di qual delitto lo accusassero, lo condussi al loro sinedrio.	28 And wanting to know the reason that they objected to him, I brought him into their council.
29 Ma trovai, die egli era accusato per conto di questioni della loro legge, senza però avere delitto alcuno degno di morte, o di catene.	29 And I discovered him to be accused about questions of their law. Yet truly, nothing deserving of death or imprisonment was within the accusation.
30 Ed essendo io stato avvertito delle insidie ordite contro di lui, lo ho mandato a te, intimando anche agli accusatori, che la discorrano innanzi a te. Stà sano.	30 And when I had been given news of ambushes, which they had prepared against him, I sent him to you, notifying his accusers also, so that they may plead their accusations before you. Farewell.”
31 I soldati adunque secondo l'ordine dato ad essi, preser seco Paolo, e lo condusser la notte ad Antipatride.	31 Therefore the soldiers, taking Paul according to their orders, brought him by night to Antipatris.
32 E il dì seguente lasciando i cavalieri, che andasser con lui, ritornarono agli alloggiamenti.	32 And the next day, sending the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the fortress.
33 E quegli entrati in Cesarea, e data la lettera al preside, gli presentarono eziandio Paolo.	33 And when they had arrived at Caesarea and had delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul before him.
34 E lettala il preside, e interrogatolo, di qual paese egli fosse, e sentito, che era di Cilicia,	34 And when he had read it and had asked which province he was from, realizing that he was from Cilicia, he said:
35 Ti ascolterò, disse, arrivati, che siano i tuoi accusatori. E ordinò, che fosse custodito nel pretorio di Erode.	35 “I will hear you, when your accusers have arrived.” And he ordered him to be kept in the praetorium of Herod.
