1 Arrivo adunque a Derbe, e a Listra. Ed ecco, che quivi si ritrovava un certo discepolo per nome Timoteo, figliuolo di una donna Giudea fedele, di padre Gentile.	1 From there he went to Derbe, and then on to Lystra, where there was a disciple cal ed Timothy, whosemother was Jewish and had become a believer; but his father was a Greek.
2 A lui rendevano buona testimonianza i fratelli, che erano in Lastra, e in Iconio.	2 The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke wel of him,
3 Volle Paolo, che questi andasse seco: e presolo lo circoncise per riguardo de' Giudei, che erano in que' luoghi; perché tutti sapevano, che il padre di lui era Gentile.	3 and Paul, who wanted to have him as a travel ing companion, had him circumcised. This was onaccount of the Jews in the locality where everyone knew his father was a Greek.
4 E passando di città in città raccomandavan di osservare le regole stabilite dagli apostoli, e dai sacerdoti, che erano in Gerusalemme.	4 As they visited one town after another, they passed on the decisions reached by the apostles andelders in Jerusalem, with instructions to observe them.
5 E le chiese si assodavano nella fede, e diventavano ogni giorno più numerose.	5 So the churches grew strong in the faith, as well as growing daily in numbers.
6 Passata poi la Frigia, e il paese della Galazia, fu loro vietato dallo Spirito Santo di aununziar la parola di Dio nell'Asia.	6 They travel ed through Phrygia and the Galatian country, because they had been told by the Holy Spiritnot to preach the word in Asia.
7 Ed essendo giunti nella Misia tentavano di andare nella Bitinia, ma nol permise loro lo Spirito di Gesù.	7 When they reached the frontier of Mysia they tried to go into Bithynia, but as the Spirit of Jesus wouldnot al ow them,
8 E traversata la Misia, giunsero a Troade.	8 they went through Mysia and came down to Troas.
9 E fu veduta la notte da Paolo una visione. Un cert'uomo di Macedonia se gli presentava pregandolo, e dicendo: passa nella Macedonia, e ajutaci.	9 One night Paul had a vision: a Macedonian appeared and kept urging him in these words, 'Comeacross to Macedonia and help us.'
10 E subito che egli ebbe veduta questa visione, cercammo di partire per la Macedonia, accertati, che ci avesse il Signore chiamati ad evangelizzare colà.	10 Once he had seen this vision we lost no time in arranging a passage to Macedonia, convinced thatGod had cal ed us to bring them the good news.
11 E fatta vela da Troade a dirittura andammo a Samotracia, e il di seguente a Napoli.	11 Sailing from Troas we made a straight run for Samothrace; the next day for Neapolis,
12 E di lì a Filippi, colonia, che è la prima città di quella parte di Macedonia e dimorammo in questa città alcuni giorni.	12 and from there for Philippi, a Roman colony and the principal city of that district of Macedonia.
13 E il giorno di sabato uscimmo fuori di porta vicino al fiume, dove pareva, che fosse l'orazione: e postici a sedere parlavamo alle donne congregate.	13 After a few days in this city we went outside the gates beside a river as it was the Sabbath and thiswas a customary place for prayer. We sat down and preached to the women who had come to the meeting.
14 E una certa donna per nome Lidia della città di Thiatira, che vendeva la porpora, timorata di Dio, ascoltò: cui il Signore apri il cuore per attendere a quello, che diceva Paolo.	14 One of these women was called Lydia, a woman from the town of Thyatira who was in the purple-dyetrade, and who revered God. She listened to us, and the Lord opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying.
15 E battezzata, che fu ella, e la sua famiglia, pregò, dicendo: Se avete giudicato, che io sia fedele al Signore, venite, e fermatevi a casa mia; e ci fé forza.	15 After she and her household had been baptised she kept urging us, 'If you judge me a true believer in the Lord,' she said, 'come and stay with us.' And she would take no refusal.
16 Accadde poi, che andando noi all'orazione, una serva, che aveva lo spirito di Pitone, ci venne incontro. Ella portava molto guadagno a' suoi padroni col fare l'indovina.	16 It happened one day that as we were going to prayer, we were met by a slave-girl who was asoothsayer and made a lot of money for her masters by foretel ing the future.
17 Costei seguitando Paolo, e noi, gridava: Questi uomini sono servi di Dio altissimo, che annunziano a voi la via della salute.	17 This girl started fol owing Paul and the rest of us and shouting, 'Here are the servants of the MostHigh God; they have come to tel you how to be saved!'
18 Ciò ella faceva per molti giorni. Ma Paolo annojato, rivoltosi disse allo Spirito: Ordino a te nel nome di Gesù Cristo, che esca da costei; e nel medesimo punto se n' andò.	18 She did this day after day until Paul was exasperated and turned round and said to the spirit, 'I orderyou in the name of Jesus Christ to leave that woman.' The spirit went out of her then and there.
19 Ma vedendo i padroni di lei, che se n' era andata la speranza del loro guadagno, presero Paolo, e Sita, e gli condussero nel foro ai decurioni:	19 When her masters saw that there was no hope of making any more money out of her, they seizedPaul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities.
20 E presentatigli ai magistrati, dissero: Questi uomini mettono sossopra la nostra città, essendo Giudei:	20 Taking them before the magistrates they said, 'These people are causing a disturbance in our city.They are Jews
21 E predicano cerimonie, le quali non è lecito a noi di abbracciare, né di praticare essendo noi Romani.	21 and are advocating practices which it is unlawful for us as Romans to accept or fol ow.'
22 E insieme la moltitudine insorse contro di essi: e i magistrati, lacerate loro le vesti, ordinarono, che fossero battuti con le verghe.	22 The crowd joined in and showed its hostility to them, so the magistrates had them stripped andordered them to be flogged.
23 E date loro molte battiture li cacciarono in prigione, dando ordine al custode, che facesse buona guardia.	23 They were given many lashes and then thrown into prison, and the gaoler was told to keep a closewatch on them.
24 Il quale ricevuto simil comando, li mise nella più profonda segreta, e strinse in ceppi i loro piedi.	24 So, fol owing such instructions, he threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in thestocks.
25 E su la mezza notte Paolo, e Sila oravano, cantando laudi a Dio: e i carcerati gli udivano.	25 In the middle of the night Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the otherprisoners listened.
26 Ma a un tratto venne un gran tremuoto, e tale, che si scossero le fondamenta della prigione; e si apriron di subito tutte le porte, e si sciolsero a tutti le catene.	26 Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison to its foundations. Al the doors flew openand the chains fel from al the prisoners.
27 E risvegliatosi il custode della prigione, e vedute aperte le porte della prigione, sguainata la spada, voleva uccidersi, credendo, che i prigioni fossero fuggiti.	27 When the gaoler woke and saw the doors wide open he drew his sword and was about to commitsuicide, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.
28 Ma Paolo gridò ad alta voce, dicendo: Non fare a te male alcuno, mentre siam qui tutti quanti.	28 But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, 'Do yourself no harm; we are al here.'
29 E quegli avendo chiesto del lume entrò dentro, e tremante si gittò a' piedi di Paolo, e di Sila.	29 He cal ed for lights, then rushed in, threw himself trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas,
30 E menatili fuora, disse: Signori, che deggio fare per esser salvo?	30 and escorted them out, saying, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'
31 Ed essi dissero: Credi nel Signore Gesù, e sarai salvo tu, e la tua famiglia.	31 They told him, 'Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and you wil be saved, and your household too.'
32 E parlarono della parola del Signore a lui, e a quanti erano nella di lui casa.	32 Then they preached the word of the Lord to him and to al his household.
33 E presili seco in quella stessa ora di notte, lavò le loro piaghe, e fu battezzato egli, e tutta la sua famiglia immmediatamente.	33 Late as it was, he took them to wash their wounds, and was baptised then and there with al hishousehold.
34 E condottigli a casa sua, apparecchiò loro da mangiare, e fece festa dell'avere creduto a Dio con tutti i suoi.	34 Afterwards he took them into his house and gave them a meal, and the whole household celebratedtheir conversion to belief in God.
35 E fattosi giorno, i magistrati mandarono i littori a dire: Metti in libertà quegli uomini.	35 When it was daylight the magistrates sent the lictors with the order: 'Release those men.'
36 E il custode portò questa nuova a Paolo: I magistrati hanno mandato a liberarvi: or dunque uscite, e andatevene in pace.	36 The gaoler reported the message to Paul, 'The magistrates have sent an order for your release; youcan go now and be on your way.'
37 Ma Paolo disse loro: Ci hanno battuti pubblicamente, senza che fossimo condannati. Romani, come siamo, messi in prigione, e ora nascostamente ci mandan via? Non sarà così: ma vengano,	37 'What!' Paul replied. 'Without trial they gave us a public flogging, though we are Roman citizens, andthrew us into prison, and now they want to send us away on the quiet! Oh no! They must come and escort us outthemselves.'
38 Ed eglino ci traggan fuora. Riferirono i littori queste parole a' magistrati, i quali sentendo, che erano romani, ebber paura:	38 The lictors reported this to the magistrates, who were terrified when they heard they were Romancitizens.
39 E andarono, e fecer loro buone parole, e trattili fuora li pregarono di partirsi dalla città.	39 They came and urged them to leave the town.
40 Ed eglino usciti di prigione entrarono in casa di Lidia: e veduti i fratelli gli consolarono, e si partirono.	40 From the prison they went to Lydia's house where they saw all the brothers and gave them someencouragement; then they left.
