Lettera agli Efesini 4

1 Or io, che sono prigioniero del Signore, vi scongiuro ad avere una condotta degna della vocazione che avete ricevuta,	1 And so, as a prisoner in the Lord, I beg you to walk in a manner worthy of the vocation to which you have been called:
2 con tutta umiltà, con mansuetudine, con pazienza, con carità, sopportandovi gli uni gli altri,	2 with all humility and meekness, with patience, supporting one another in charity.
3 studiandovi di conservare l'unità dello Spirito col vincolo della pace,	3 Be anxious to preserve the unity of the Spirit within the bonds of peace.
4 un sol corpo, un solo Spirito, come ad una sola speranza siete stati chiamati colla vostra vocazione.	4 One body and one Spirit: to this you have been called by the one hope of your calling:
5 Un solo Signore, una sola fede, un solo battesimo.	5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 Un solo Dio e Padre di tutti, che è sopra di tutti, che è in tut­te le cose e specialmente in noi tutti.	6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in us all.
7 Ma a ciascuno di noi la grazia è stata data secondo la misura del dono di Cristo,	7 Yet to each one of us there has been given grace according to the measure allotted by Christ.
8 e dice per questo: Salito in alto menò schiava la schiavitù, distribuì doni agli uomini.	8 Because of this, he says: “Ascending on high, he took captivity itself captive; he gave gifts to men.”
9 Ma che vorrebbe dire quel « salito », se prima non fosse anche disceso nelle regioni inferiori della terra?	9 Now that he has ascended, what is left except for him also to descended, first to the lower parts of the earth?
10 Colui che è disceso è quel medesimo che è pure salito sopra tutti i cieli, a dar compimento ad ogni cosa.	10 He who descended is the same one who also ascended above all the heavens, so that he might fulfill everything.
11 Ed è lui che ha fatto alcuni apostoli, altri profeti, altri evangelisti, altri pastori e dottori,	11 And the same one granted that some would be Apostles, and some Prophets, yet truly others evangelists, and others pastors and teachers,
12 per il perfezionamento dei santi, per l'opera del ministero, per la edificazione del corpo di Cristo,	12 for the sake of the perfection of the saints, by the work of the ministry, in the edification of the body of Christ,
13 finchè non arriviamo tut­ti, per l'unità della fede e della conoscenza del Figlio di Dio, al­l'uomo perfetto, alla misura dell'età piena di Cristo,	13 until we all meet in the unity of faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as a perfect man, in the measure of the age of the fullness of Christ.
14 in modo che non siamo come fanciulli sballottati e portati qua e là da ogni vento di dottrina per i raggiri degli uomini, per le astuzie che rendono seducente l'errore,	14 So may we then no longer be little children, disturbed and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the wickedness of men, and by the craftiness which deceives unto error.
15 ma praticando la verità nella carità continuiamo a crescere per ogni parte in lui che è il capo, Cristo,	15 Instead, acting according to truth in charity, we should increase in everything, in him who is the head, Christ himself.
16 dal quale il corpo, proporzionato e concatenato per tutte le giunture, che si dànno mutuo soccorso, in virtù dell'operazione destinata a ciascun membro, riceve il suo aumento per essere edificato nella carità.	16 For in him, the whole body is joined closely together, by every underlying joint, through the function allotted to each part, bringing improvement to the body, toward its edification in charity.
17 Vi dico dunque, scongiurandovi nel Signore, di non vivere più come i pagani che seguono la vanità dei loro pensieri,	17 And so, I say this, and I testify in the Lord: that from now on you should walk, not as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18 che han no l'intelligenza ottenebrata e sono alieni dal vivere secondo Dio, a motivo dell'ignoranza nel­la quale si trovano in seguito al l'induramento del loro cuore.	18 having their intellect obscured, being alienated from the life of God, through the ignorance that is within them, because of the blindness of their hearts.
19 che privi d'ogni speranza si so­no abbandonati all'impurità, fino a commettere con ardente cupi­digia ogni sorta d'infamità.	19 Such as these, despairing, have given themselves over to sexual immorality, carrying out every impurity with rapacity.
20 Ma voi non avete imparato così Cristo,	20 But this is not what you have learned in Christ.
21 se ben lo avete ascoltato e siete stati ammaestrati in lui, secondo la verità che è in Gesù,	21 For certainly, you have listened to him, and you have been instructed in him, according to the truth that is in Jesus:
22 a spogliarvi riguardo al passato, dell'uomo vecchio, che si corrompe assecondando le passioni ingannatrici,	22 to set aside your earlier behavior, the former man, who was corrupted, by means of desire, unto error,
23 a rinnovarvi nello spirito della vostra mente,	23 and so be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
24 a rivestirvi dell'uomo nuovo, creato secondo Dio nella giustizia e nella vera santità.	24 and so put on the new man, who, in accord with God, is created in justice and in the holiness of truth.
25 Lasciate quindi da parte ogni menzogna, « parli ciascuno secondo la verità al suo prossimo », perchè siamo membra gli uni degli altri.	25 Because of this, setting aside lying, speak the truth, each one with his neighbor. For we are all part of one another.
26 Se vi adirate, guardatevi dal peccare: il sole non tramonti sopra l'ira vostra;	26 “Be angry, but do not be willing to sin.” Do not let the sun set over your anger.
27 nè fate posto al diavolo.	27 Provide no place for the devil.
28 Chi rubava non rubi più, ma faccia piuttosto colle sue mani qualche onesto lavoro per aver di che dare ai bisognosi.	28 Whoever was stealing, let him now not steal, but rather let him labor, working with his hands, doing what is good, so that he may have something to distribute to those who suffer need.
29 Non escano dalla vostra bocca discorsi cattivi, e se ne avete dei buoni che edifichino la fede, diteli per far del bene a chi vi ascolta.	29 Let no evil words proceed from your mouth, but only what is good, toward the edification of faith, so as to bestow grace upon those who listen.
30 E non contristate lo Spirito Santo di Dio, dal quale avete ricevuto il sigillo pel giorno della redenzio­ne.	30 And do not be willing to grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you have been sealed, unto the day of redemption.
31 Ogni amarezza, ed ira, e indignazione, e clamore, e ingiuria, ed ogni sorta di malizia sia lontana da voi.	31 Let all bitterness and anger and indignation and outcry and blasphemy be taken away from you, along with all malice.
32 Siate invece benigni gli uni verso gli altri, misericordiosi, perdonandovi reciprocamente, come anche Dio in Cristo vi ha perdonato.	32 And be kind and merciful to one another, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you in Christ.
