1 Prima della festa di Pasqua sapendo Gesù che era venuta la sua ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò sino alla fine.	1 Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.
2 E fatta la cena, avendo già il diavolo messo in cuore a Giuda di Simone Iscariote di tradirlo,	2 The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper,
3 sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani, e come, venuto da Dio, a Dio tornava,	3 fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God,
4 si alzò da tavola, depose la veste, e preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.	4 he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
5 Poi versata dell'acqua in un catino, cominciò a lavare i piedi ai discepoli, e ad asciugarli con l'asciugatoio di cui era cinto.	5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.
6 Venne dunque a Simon Pietro. E Pietro gli disse: Signore, tu lavarmi i piedi?	6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?"
7 Gli rispose Gesù: Quel che fo' tu ora non lo comprendi; ma lo saprai in avvenire.	7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later."
8 E Pietro: Tu non mi laverai i piedi in eterno! Gesù gli rispose: Se non ti laverò non avrai parte con me.	8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me."
9 Allora, Signore, esclamò Simon Pietro, non soltanto i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo!	9 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well."
10 E Gesù replicò: Chi è lavato non ha bisogno che di lavarsi i piedi, per essere tutto puro. E voi siete puri, ma non tutti.	10 Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all."
11 Sapeva bene chi l'avrebbe tradito; per questo disse: Non siete tutti puri.	11 For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, "Not all of you are clean."
12 Dopo aver dunque lavati loro i piedi, riprese le sue vesti, e rimessosi a mensa, disse loro: Intendete quello che vi ho fatto?	12 So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you?
13 Voi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore, e dite bene, perchè lo sono.	13 You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am.
14 Se dunque v'ho lavati i piedi io, Maestro e Signore, dovete anche voi lavarvi i piedi l'un l'altro.	14 If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet.
15 Io infatti vi ho dato l'esempio, affinchè come ho fatto io, facciate anche voi.	15 I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.
16 In verità, in verità vi dico: Non c'è servo maggiore del suo padrone; nè apostolo da più di chi lo ha mandato.	16 Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 Sapendo queste cose sarete beati se le metterete in pratica.	17 If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
18 Non parlo di voi tutti, so quali ho eletti; ma si deve adempire la Scrittura; uno che mangia il pane con me leverà contrò di me il suo calcagno.	18 I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so that the scripture might be fulfilled, 'The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.'
19 Ve lo dico ora prima che avvenga, affinché, avvenuto che sia, crediate che son io.	19 From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
20 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi accoglie colui elio avrò mandato, accoglie me, o chi accoglie me, riceve colui che mi ha mandato.	20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."
21 Dette queste cose, Gesù si turbò nello spirito, e parlando apertamente, disse: In verità, in verità vi dico, che uno di voi mi tradirà.	21 When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, "Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."
22 Cominciarono perciò i discepoli a guardarsi l'un l'altro, non sapendo a chi alludesse.	22 The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant.
23 Stava uno dei discepoli, quello da Gesù prediletto, posando sul seno di lui.	23 One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' side.
24 A questo fe' cenno Simon Pietro, e chiese: Di chi parla?	24 So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant.
25 E quello, posato com'era sul petto di Gesù, chiese a lui: Signore, chi è mai?	25 He leaned back against Jesus' chest and said to him, "Master, who is it?"
26 Gesù gli rispose: E' quello a cui darò un pezzetto di pane intinto. E intinto un pezzetto di pane lo diede a Giuda di Simone Iscariote.	26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it." So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot.
27 E dopo quel boccone Satana entrò in lui. E Gesù gli disse: Quello che fai fallo presto.	27 After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."
28 Ma nessuno dei commensali comprese perchè egli avesse così parlato.	28 (Now) none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.
29 Difatti alcuni pensavano, che tenendo Giuda la borsa, Gesù gli avesse detto: Compra quanto ci occorre per la festa, o che desse qualche cosa ai poveri.	29 Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or to give something to the poor.
30 Ma Giuda, preso il boccone, partì subito. Ed era notte.	30 So he took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.
31 Uscito che fu Giuda, Gesù disse: Ora è stato glorificato il Figlio dell'uomo: e Dio è stato glorificato in lui:	31 When he had left, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
32 e se Dio è stato in lui glorificato, lo glorificherà in se stesso e presto.	32 (If God is glorified in him,) God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.
33 Figliolini, son con voi ancora per poco. Mi cercherete, ma, come dissi ai Giudei: dove sono io non potete venire voi, or lo dico anche a voi.	33 My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, 'Where I go you cannot come,' so now I say it to you.
34 Vi dò un comandamento nuovo, d'amarvi scambievolmente: amatevi l'un l'altro come io vi ho amati.	34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
35 Da questo conosceran tutti che siete miei discepoli, se avrete mutuo amore.	35 This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
36 Gli disse altera Simon Pietro: Signore, dove vai? Gesù gli rispose: Dove vo io non puoi seguirmi per ora, ma più tardi mi seguirai.	36 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered (him), "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later."
37 Replicò Pietro: E perchè non posso ora, Signore, seguirti? Darò per te la vita.	37 Peter said to him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
38 Gesù gli disse: Tu darai la vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: non canterà il gallo, che tu mi avrai rinnegato per tre volte.	38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times."
