1 E il popolo partì da Haserot e piantò le tende nel deserto di Faran,	1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 ove il Signore parlò a Mosè dicendo:	2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
3 « Manda degli uomini, uno dei principali per ogni tribù, ad esplorare la terra di Canaan che io darò ai figli d'Israele ».	3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
4 Mosè, eseguendo l'ordine del Signore, mandò, dal deserto di Faran, degli uomini fra i principali. Eccone i nomi:	4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;

6 della tribù di Simeone, Safat figlio di Huri;	6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;

8 della tribù d'Issacar, Igal figlio di Giuseppe;	8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;

16 della tribù di Gad, Guel figlio di Machi.	16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
17 Questi sono i nomi degli uomini che Mosè mandò ad esplorare la terra; ad Osee figlio di Nun diede il nome di Giosuè.	17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
18 Mosè adunque li mandò ad esplorare la terra di Canaan, e disse loro: « Salite dalla parte meridionale, e, giunti alle montagne,	18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
19 guardate che paese sia, che popolo vi abiti, se forte o debole, poco o molto numeroso;	19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
20 come sia la terra, se buona o cattiva, come siano le città, se fortificate o senza mura;	20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
21 come sia il terreno, se grasso o sterile, selvoso o senza alberi. Siate coraggiosi, e portateci dei frutti della terra ». Era allora il tempo in cui potevano assaggiarsi le uve primaticce.	21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
22 Quelli partirono, ed esplorarono la terra dal deserto di Sin fino a Rohob, al varco di Emat.	22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 Saliti dalla parte meridionale, giunsero ad Ebron, dove erano Achiman, Sisai e Tolmai figli di Enac. Ebron fu edificata sette anni prima di Tanim, città dell'Egitto.	23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
24 Giunti al Torrente del Grappolo, tagliarono un tralcio col suo grappolo e lo portarono in due appeso ad una stanga. Portarono anche delle melagrane e dei fichi di quel luogo	24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
25 che fu chiamato Nehelescol, cioè Torrente del Grappolo, perchè i figli d'Israele vi avevan preso quel grappolo.	25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
26 Dopo quaranta giorni, avendo scorso tutto il paese, gli esploratori tornarono,	26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
27 e andarono a trovare Mosè, Aronne e tutta l'assemblea dei figli d'Israele a Cades, nel deserto di Faran. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.

30 Amalec abita al mezzodì; l'Eteo, il Gebuseo e l'Amorreo sulle montagne; il Cananeo invece abita pressò il mare e lungo il Giordano ».	30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
31 Allora Caleb, per sedare il rumore che già si levava nel popolo contro Mose, disse: « Andiamo a prender possesso di quella terra: la conquisteremo certamente ».	31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
32 Ma gli altri che erano andati con lui dicevano: « E impossibile salire contro quel popolo: è più forte di noi ».	32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
33 E, screditando davantiai figli d'Israele la terra che avevano esplorata, dicevano: « La terra da noi attraversata divora i suoi abitanti; il popolo che abbiamo veduto è di grande statura;	33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
34 vi abbiamo veduto certi mostri dei figli di Enac, della razza dei giganti, paragonati ai quali noi si pareva delle locuste ».
