BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Or Ietro, sacerdote di Madian e suo cero di Mosè, avendo inteso tutto quello che Dio aveva fatto a Mosè e a Israele suo popolo e come il Signore aveva tratto Israele dall'Egitto,	1 Jethro, priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, had heard al about what God had done for Moses andfor Israel his people: how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.
2 prese Sefora, moglie di Mosè, che questi gli aveva rimandata,	2 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then took back Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent home,
3 e i due figli di lei, chiamato l'uno Gersam, (perchè il padre aveva detto: Sono stato pellegrino in terra straniera),	3 with her two sons; one of them was cal ed Gershom because, he had said, 'I am an alien in a foreignland,'
4 e l'altro Eliezer (perchè il padre aveva detto: Il Dio del mio padre fu mio aiuto e mi ha liberato dalla spada di Faraone).	4 and the other cal ed Eliezer because 'My father's God is my help and has delivered me from Pharaoh'ssword.'
5 Così Ietro, suocero di Mosè, venne, coi figli e colla moglie di lui, a trovarlo nel deserto, ove egli era accampato sotto il monte di Dio.	5 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, with Moses' sons and wife, came to Moses in the desert where hewas encamped, at the mountain of God.
6 E mandò a dire a Mosè: « Io, Ietro, tuo suocero, vengo a te colla tua moglie che ha seco i tuoi due figlioli ».	6 'Here is your father-in-law Jethro approaching', Moses was told, 'with your wife and her two sons.'
7 Allora Mosè andò incontro al suocero, gli s'inchinò e lo baciò e si salutarono scambievolmente con amichevoli parole. Ricevutolo poi nel padiglione,	7 So Moses went out to greet his father-in-law, bowed low to him and kissed him; and when each hadasked how the other was they went into the tent.
8 Mosè raccontò al suocero tutto quello che il Signore aveva fatto a Faraone e all'Egitto per amore d'Israele, e tutti i travagli sofferti nel viaggio, e come il Signore li avesse liberati.	8 Moses then told his father-in-law al about what Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians forIsrael's sake, and about al the hardships that they had encountered on the way, and how Yahweh had rescuedthem.
9 E Ietro, dopo essersi rallegrato di tutto il bene che il Signore aveva fatto a Israele, liberandolo dalla mano degli Egiziani,	9 And Jethro was delighted at al Yahweh's goodness to Israel in having rescued them from the clutchesof the Egyptians.
10 disse: « Benedetto il Signore che vi ha liberati dalla mano degli Egiziani e dalla mano di Faraone ed ha sottratto il suo popolo dalla mano dell'Egitto.	10 'Blessed be Yahweh', Jethro exclaimed, 'for having rescued you from the clutches of the Egyptiansand the clutches of Pharaoh, for having rescued the people from the grasp of the Egyptians!
11 Ora riconosco che il Signore è grande sopra tutti gli dèi, chè li han trattati con superbia ».	11 Now I know that Yahweh is greater than al other gods. . .'
12 Poi Ietro, suocero di Mosè, offrì olocausti e ostie a Dio, e Aronne e tutti gli anziani d'Israele andarono a mangiare con lui dinanzi a Dio.	12 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then offered a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God; and Aaron and al the elders of Israel came and ate with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.
13 Ma il giorno dopo Mosè si assise per render ragione al popolo, il quale rimase intorno a lui dalla mattina alla sera.	13 On the fol owing day, Moses took his seat to administer justice for the people, and the people werestanding round him from morning til evening.
14 E il suocero di Mosè, avendo osservato tutto quello che faceva per il popolo, disse: « Che cosa è questo che tu fai pel popolo? Perchè siedi solo, e fai aspetta re il popolo dalla mattina alla sera? »	14 Seeing all he did for the people, Moses' father-in-law said to him, 'Why do you do this for the people,why sit here alone with the people standing round you from morning til evening?'
15 Mosè gli rispose: « Il popolo viene a me per sentire la sentenza di Dio.	15 Moses replied to his father-in-law, 'Because the people come to me to consult God.
16 Quindi qualunque contesa abbian tra loro, vengono da me, perchè io giudichi fra loro, facendo conoscere gli ordini di Dio e le sue leggi ».	16 When they have a problem they come to me, and I give a ruling between the one and the other andmake God's statutes and laws known to them.'
17 E l'altro rispose: « Non fai bene:	17 Moses' father-in-law then said to him, 'What you are doing is not right.
18 con improba fatica tu consumi te stesso e questo popolo che è teco, la cosa è al di sopra delle tue forze, e non puoi reggervi da solo.	18 You wil only tire yourself out, and the people with you too, for the work is too heavy for you. Youcannot do it all yourself.
19 Or ascolta le mie parole e i miei consigli, e Dio sarà con te. Resta pure il mediatore del popolo nelle cose che riguardano Dio, e recane a Dio le cause,	19 Now listen to the advice I am going to give you, and God be with you! Your task is to represent thepeople to God, to lay their cases before God,
20 e fai poi conoscere al popolo le cerimonie, il modo d'onorare Dio, la strada che devon battere e quello che devon fare.	20 and to teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way they ought to fol ow and how theyought to behave.
21 Ma scegli fra tutto il popolo uomini di valore, timorati di Dio, amanti della verità e nemici dell'avarizia, e fanne dei tribuni, dei centurioni, dei capi di cinquanta e di dieci uomini,	21 At the same time, from the people at large choose capable and God-fearing men, men who aretrustworthy and incorruptible, and put them in charge of them as heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens,
22 rendano essi ragione al popolo in ogni tempo, riferendo a te le cose più gravi, e giudicando essi le minori, in modo che ti resti più leggero il peso diviso cogli altri.	22 and make them the people's permanent judges. They wil refer al important matters to you, but alminor matters they will decide themselves, so making things easier for you by sharing the burden with you.
23 Se farai così, adempirai il comando di Dio e potrai eseguirne i precetti, mentre tutta questa gente potrà tornare in pace alla sua dimora ».	23 If you do this -- and may God so command you -- you will be able to stand the strain, and all thesepeople wil go home satisfied.'
24 Sentito il consiglio, Mosè lo accettò e,	24 Moses took his father-in-law's advice and did just as he said.
25 scelti degli uomini di valore fra tutto Israele, li costituì capi del popolo, tribuni, centurioni, capi di cinquanta e di dieci uomini.	25 Moses chose capable men from al Israel and put them in charge of the people as heads ofthousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
26 Così essi rendevan ragione al popolo in ogni tempo, riferendo a Mosè le cause più gravi, e giudicando soltanto le più facili.	26 These acted as the people's permanent judges. They referred hard cases to Moses but decidedminor matters themselves.
27 Poi Ietro, accomiatato da Mosè, ritornò al suo paese.	27 Moses then set his father-in-law on his way, and he travelled back to his own country.
