| 1 Or avvenne che Naas re dei figli d'Ammon morì, e gli successe nel regno il suo figlio. | 1 Now after this Nahash the king of the Ammonites died, and his son reigned in his stead. |
| 2 Allora David disse: « Userò benevolenza con Hanon figlio di Naas, perchè suo padre usò bontà verso di me ». Poi David mandò dei messi a consolarlo della perdita del padre. Ma giunti che furono nel paese dei figli di Ammon per consolare Hanon, | 2 And David said, "I will deal loyally with Hanun the son of Nahash, for his father dealt loyally with me." So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites, to console him. |

Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?" |
| 4 Allora Hanon fece tosare e radere i servi di David, e, fatte tagliare loro le tuniche dalle natiche fino ai piedi, li rimandò. | 4 So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away; |
| 5 Essi se ne andarono e fecero sapere la cosa a David, che mandò loro incontro, perchè avevan ricevuto un grande oltraggio, e ordinò di fermarsi a Gerico, fino a tanto che non fosse cresciuta la loro barba, e allora tornassero. | 5 and they departed. When David was told concerning the men, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, "Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return." |
| 6 I figli d'Ammòn accorgendosi d'avere fatta ingiuria a David, tanto Hanon che tutto il popolo mandarono mille talenti d'argento per assoldare carri e cavalieri dalla Mesopotamia, dalla Siria, da Maaca, e da Soba. | 6 When the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah. |
| 7 Assoldarono trentadue mila carri e il re di Maaca colla sua gente. Questi giunti che furono posero il campo di faccia a Medaba; ed anche i figli d'Ammon si adunarono dalle loro città per la guerra. | 7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his army, who came and encamped before Medeba. And the Ammonites were mustered from their cities and came to battle. |
| 8 David, avendo ciò inteso, mandò Gioab con tutto l'esercito degli uomini di valore. | 8 When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. |
| 9 I figli d'Ammon uscirono e si disposero in ordine di battaglia presso la porta della città, e i re venuti in loro aiuto si tennero in disparte nella campagna. | 9 And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country. |
| 10 Gioab, accortosi che la battaglia era fatta contro di lui di fronte e alle spalle, scelse gli uomini più valorosi di tutto Israele e andò contro i Siri. | 10 When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the picked men of Israel, and arrayed them against the Syrians; |
| 11 Il resto del popolo lo affidò al comando di Abisai suo fratello, che li dispose contro i figli d'Ammon. | 11 the rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and they were arrayed against the Ammonites. |
| 12 Poi disse: « Se i Siri mi vincono, tu mi darai aiuto: se poi vincessero te i figli d'Ammon, verrò io in tuo soccorso. | 12 And he said, "If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will help you. |
| 13 Fatti animo, e combattiamo virilmente pel nostro popolo e per la città del nostro Dio: il Signore poi farà ciò che gli parrà bene ». | 13 Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what seems good to him." |
| 14 Così Gioab colla sua gente andò ad attaccare i Siri e li mise in fuga. | 14 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Syrians for battle; and they fled before him. |
| 15 I figli d'Ammon, vedendo che i Siri eran fuggiti, fuggirono anch'essi davanti ad Abisai fratello di Gioab ed entrarono nella città. Gioab allora se ne tornò a Gerusalemme. | 15 And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, Joab's brother, and entered the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem. |
| 16 I Siri, vedutisi sconfitti davanti a Israele, spediti dei messi, fecero venire i Siri che eran di là del fiume, dei quali era duce Sofac capo dell'esercito di Adarezer. | 16 But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. |
| 17 David, risaputa la cosa, radunò tutto Israele, passò il Giordano e si gettò sopra di essi. Ordinò la battaglia di fronte, mentre quelli resistevano dalla loro parte. | 17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and crossed the Jordan, and came to them, and drew up his forces against them. And when David set the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him. |
| 18 Ma i Siri fuggirono dinanzi a Israele, e David uccise ai Siri gli uomini di sette mila carri, quaranta mila uomini a piedi e Sofac capo dell'esercito. | 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand foot soldiers, and killed also Shophach the commander of their army. |
| 19 I servi di Adarezer, vedendosi vinti da Israele, passarono a David e si assoggettarono a lui, e la Siria non volle dar più aiuti ai figli d'Ammon. | 19 And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David, and became subject to him. So the Syrians were not willing to help the Ammonites any more. |
