1 La guerra fu lunga tra la casa di Saul e la casa di David; ma David avanzava e diveniva sempre più forte, mentre la casa di Saul andava sempre decadendo.	1 So the war dragged on between the House of Saul and the House of David, but David grew steadilystronger and the House of Saul steadily weaker.
2 In Ebron nacquero a David dei figli: il suo primogenito fu Amnon, di Achinoam Iezraelita;	2 The sons born to David at Hebron were: his first-born Amnon, by Ahinoam of Jezreel;
3 Il secondo Cheleab, di Abigail, già moglie di Nabal del Carmelo; il terzo Assalonne, figlio di Maaca, figlia di Tolmai re di Gessur;	3 his second Chileab, by Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third Absalom son of Maacah, daughter ofTalmai king of Geshur;
4 il quarto Adonia, figlio di Aggit; il quinto Safatia, figlio di Abitai;	4 the fourth Adonijah son of Haggith; the fifth Shephatiah son of Abital;
5 il sesto Ietraam, figlio di Egla, moglie di David. Questi nacquero a David in Ebron.	5 the sixth Ithream, by David's wife, Eglah. These were born to David at Hebron.
6 Durante la guerra tra la casa di Saul e quella di David, colui che reggeva la casa di Saul era Abner figlio di Ner.	6 This is what took place during the war between the House of Saul and the House of David. Abner tookcomplete control in the House of Saul.
7 Or Saul aveva avuta una concubina chiamata Resfa, figlia di Aia, e Isboset disse ad Abner:	7 Now, there was a concubine of Saul's called Rizpah daughter of Aiah, and Abner took her. Ishbaal saidto Abner, 'Why have you slept with my father's concubine?'
8 « Perchè sei entrato dalla concubina di mio padre? » Abner, oltremodo sdegnato per le parole d'Isboset, disse: « Son io forse la testa d'un cane, io che oggi son l'avversario di Giuda? Io ho usata misericordia verso la casa di Saul tuo padre, e verso i suoi fratelli e i suoi parenti; io non ti ho dato nelle mani di David, e tu hai cercato in me oggi di che riprendermi per una donna?	8 At these words of Ishbaal, Abner flew into a rage. 'Am I a dog's head?' he shouted. 'Here am I, ful offaithful love towards the House of Saul your father, his brothers and his friends, not leaving you to the hands ofDavid, and now you find fault with me over a woman!
9 Dio faccia ad Abner questo e peggio se io non farò con David, come il Signore gli ha giurato,	9 May God bring unnameable il s on Abner, and worse ones, too, if I do not bring about what Yahweh hassworn to David:
10 di togliere il regno dalla casa di Saul, affinchè il trono di David s'innalzi sopra Israele e sopra Giuda, da Dan sino a Bersabee ».	10 to take the sovereignty from the House of Saul, and establish David's throne over Israel as well asJudah, from Dan to Beersheba!'
11 Isboset non potè rispondere una sola parola ad Abner, perchè lo temeva.	11 Ishbaal dared not say a single word to Abner in reply, as he was afraid of him.
12 Ma Abner mandò a David dei messi che da parte sua gli dicessero: « A chi appartiene il paese? » e poi aggiungessero: « Fa amicizia con me, e la mia mano verrà in tuo aiuto, ed io ricondurrò a te tutto Israele ».	12 Abner sent messengers on his own behalf to say to David, '. . . and furthermore, come to anagreement with me and I wil give you my support to win al Israel over to you.'
13 David rispose: « Ottimamente: io farò amicizia con te; ma ti chiedo una sola cosa, e dico che tu non potrai vedere la mia faccia prima d'avermi condotta Micol, figlia di Saul; allora potrai venire e vedermi ».	13 'Very wel ,' David said, 'I wil come to an agreement with you. I impose one condition however; you wilnot be admitted to my presence unless you bring me Michal, Saul's daughter, when you come to see me.'
14 Poi David mandò ad Isboset, figlio di Saul, dei messi a dirgli: « Rendimi Micol mia moglie, che io ebbi in sposa per cento prepuzi dei Filistei ».	14 David then sent messengers to say to Ishbaal son of Saul, 'Give me back my wife Michal, whom Iacquired for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.'
15 Isboset allora mandò a toglierla al suo marito Faltiel figlio di Lais.	15 So Ishbaal sent for her to be taken from her husband Paltiel son of Laish.
16 Suo marito le tenne dietro piangendo fino a Bahurim, ove, avendogli detto Abner: « Va e torna indietro », egli se ne ritornò.	16 Her husband set off with her and fol owed her, weeping as he went, as far as Bahurim; but Abner saidto him, 'Go back!' and he went.
17 Abner poi prese anche a trattare cogli anziani d'Israele e a dir loro: « Giacché voi da gran tempo desiderate d'avere David come re sopra di voi,	17 Now Abner conferred with the elders of Israel. 'For a long time now,' he said, 'you have wanted Davidas your king.
18 fatelo; perchè il Signore ha parlato a David, dicendo: Per mezzo di David mio servo io salverò il mio popolo Israele dai Filistei e da tutti i suoi nemici».	18 Now you must take action, since Yahweh has said of David, "By the hand of my servant David I shaldeliver my people Israel from the clutches of the Philistines and al their enemies." '
19 Dopo aver parlato anche con quelli di Beniamino, Abner parti per riportare a David in Ebron le decisioni d'Israele e di tutto Beniamino.	19 Abner also spoke to the men of Benjamin and then went to Hebron to tel David everything that hadbeen agreed by Israel and the House of Benjamin.
20 Andò dunque da David in Ebron con venti persone. David fece un convito ad Abner e agli uomini che erano venuti con lui.	20 Abner, accompanied by twenty men, came to David at Hebron, and David held a feast for Abner andthe men who were with him.
21 Abner disse a David: « Or io andrò a radunare tutto Israele intorno a te, mio re e signore, e farò alleanza con te, affinchè tu possa comandare a tutti, come desidera l'anima tua ». Or quando David ebbe accomiatato Abner, che se n'era partito in pace,	21 Abner then said to David, 'I must get up and go. I am going to rally al Israel to my lord the king, so thatthey will make an alliance with you, and you wil reign over al that you desire.' So David al owed Abner to go,and he went unmolested.
22 ecco sopraggiungere con Gioab gli uomini di David, i quali, fatti a pezzi alcuni ladroni, se ne tornavano carichi di preda. Abner non era più con David in Ebron; ma, essendo stato da lui licenziato, se n'era partito in pace,	22 David's retainers were just then coming back with Joab from a raid, bringing a great quantity of bootywith them. Abner was no longer with David at Hebron, since David had allowed him to go, and he had goneunmolested.
23 e Gioab e tutto l'esercito che era con lui arrivarono dopo. Gioab, essendogli riferita la cosa da alcuni che dicevano: « Abner figlio di Ner è venuto dal re, il quale l'ha licenziato e l'ha fatto andare in pace »,	23 When Joab and the whole company with him had arrived, Joab was told, 'Abner son of Ner has beento the king, and the king has al owed Abner to go away unmolested.'
24 entrò dal re e disse: « Che hai fatto? Ecco Abner è venuto da te. Perchè l'hai rimandato, l'hai fatto andare, l'hai fatto allontanare?	24 Joab then went to the king and said, 'What have you done? Abner comes to you and you let him goaway and now he has gone-why?
25 Non sai che Abner figlio di Ner, è venuto da te per ingannarti, per spiare ogni tua mossa, e saper tutto quello che fai? »	25 You know Abner son of Ner! He came to trick you, to discover your every move, to find out what youare doing.'
26 Uscito da David, Gioab spedì messi dietro ad Abner, e lo fece ritornare dalla cisterna di Sira, all'insaputa di David.	26 Joab left David's presence and sent messengers after Abner and these, unknown to David, broughthim back from the storage-wel at Sirah.
27 Quando Abner fu ritornato in Ebron, Gioab lo tirò da parte nel mezzo della porta, per parlargli a tradimento, e lo percosse nell'inguine: egli morì per vendetta del sangue di Asael fratello di Gioab.	27 When Abner reached Hebron, Joab took him aside in the town-gate, as if to have a quiet word withhim, and there struck him a mortal blow in the bel y to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel.
28 David, udito che ebbe l'accaduto, disse: « Son mondo per sempre, io e il mio regno dinanzi al Signore, dal sangue di Abner figlio di Ner:	28 Afterwards, when David heard of this, he said, 'I and my kingdom are for ever innocent before Yahwehof the blood of Abner son of Ner;
29 esso ricada sopra il capo di Gioab e sopra tutta la casa di suo padre, e non manchi mai nella casa di Gioab chi soffra di gonorrea, chi sia lebbroso, chi maneggi il fuso, chi perisca di spada, chi sia privo di pane ».	29 may it fal on the head of Joab and on al his family! May the House of Joab never be free of menafflicted with haemorrhage or a virulent skin-disease, whose strength is in the distaff, who fall by the sword, wholack food.'
30 Gioab e Abisai suo fratello uccisero Abner, perchè egli aveva ucciso Asael loro fratello, nella battaglia di Gabaon.	30 (Joab and his brother Abishai had murdered Abner because he killed their brother Asahel at the battleof Gibeon.)
31 Ma David disse a Gioab e a tutto il popolo che era con lui: « Stracciate le vostre vesti e cingetevi di sacco e fate duolo nei funerali di Abner ». Il re andava dietro alla bara.	31 David then said to Joab and the whole company with him, 'Tear your clothes, put on sackcloth, andmourn over Abner,' and King David walked behind the bier.
32 Seppellito che ebbero Abner in Ebron, il re David pianse ad alte grida sopra il sepolcro di Abner e con lui pianse tutto il popolo.	32 They buried Abner at Hebron, and the king wept aloud on his grave, and the people al wept too.
33 Il re fece piangendo il funebre lamento e disse: « Non come soglion morire i vili è morto Abner:	33 The king made this lament over Abner: Should Abner have died as a brute dies?
34 le tue mani non sono state legate; i tuoi piedi non sono stati messi nei ceppi: sei caduto come si cade dinanzi ai figli d'iniquità! » Tutto il popolo seguitò il pianto sopra Abner,	34 Your hands were not tied, your feet not chained; you fel as a man falls at the hands of criminals. Andal the people wept for him louder than ever.
35 e quando tutta la gente andò per prender cibo con David, essendo ancora giorno, David giurò e disse: « Dio mi faccia questo e peggio, se assaggio pane o altra cosa prima del tramonto del sole! »	35 The people then al tried to persuade David to have some food while it was still daylight, but Davidswore this oath, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse il s, too, if I taste bread or anything whateveruntil the sun is down!'
36 Tutto il popolo udì, e gli piacquero tutte le cose che il re aveva fatte al cospetto di tutto il popolo;	36 Al the people took note of this and it pleased them; indeed, everything the king did pleased thepeople.
37 e in quel giorno tutto il popolo e tutto Israele riconobbe che non era stato il re la causa della morte di Abner figlio di Ner.	37 That day, al the people and al Israel understood that the king had had no part in the murder of Abnerson of Ner.
38 Poi David disse ai suoi servi: « Non sapete voi che un principe, e uno dei più grandi, è caduto oggi in Israele?	38 The king said to his retainers, 'Do you not realise that a prince, a great man, has fal en in Israel today?
39 Io sono tutt'ora debole sebbene unto re e questi figli di Sarvia son duri per me: renda il Signore a chi fa il male secondo la sua malizia ».	39 I, though anointed king, am weak at present, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too strong forme. May Yahweh repay the criminal as his crime deserves!'
