| 3 Gesù prese a dire ai dottori della legge e ai Farisei: «È lecito o no guarire alcuno in giorno di sabato?». | 3 And Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath, or not?" |
| 4 Ma quelli stavan zitti. Allora egli, preso colui per la mano, lo guarì e lo congedò. | 4 But they were silent. Then he took him and healed him, and let him go. |
| 5 Poi soggiunse: «Chi di voi, se di sabato gli cade l'asino o il bue nel fosso, non lo tira fuori subito?». | 5 And he said to them, "Which of you, having an ass or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on a sabbath day?" |
| 6 Ed essi non gli potevano opporre nulla. | 6 And they could not reply to this. |
| 7 Notando poi che gl'invitati sceglievano i primi posti, raccontò loro questa parabola: | 7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, |
| 8 «Quando sarai invitato a nozze da qualcuno, non metterti al primo posto, perchè non accada che tra gl'invitati vi sia un uomo più ragguardevole di te, | 8 "When you are invited by any one to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him; |
| 9 e chi ha invitato te e lui venga a dirti: - Cedigli il posto -; e allora tu debba con vergogna cominciare a metterti all'ultimo posto. | 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, 'Give place to this man,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. |
| 10 Ma quando sarai invitato, vai a metterti all'ultimo posto, affinchè venendo colui che ti ha invitato, possa dirti: - Amico, vieni più in su. - E allora ne avrai onore presso tutti i commensali. | 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, 'Friend, go up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. |
| 11 Perchè chiunque si inalza sarà abbassato e chiunque s'abbassa sarà inalzato». | 11 For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." |
| 12 Poi disse a colui che lo aveva invitato: «Quando fai un pranzo o una cena, non invitare i tuoi amici o i tuoi fratelli, nè i tuoi parenti, nè i vicini ricchi, perchè non avvenga che anch'essi t'invitino e ti sia reso il contraccambio. | 12 He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid. |
| 13 Ma quando fai un convito, chiama poveri, storpi, zoppi e ciechi; | 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, |
| 14 e sarai fortunato che non abbian modo di contraccambiarti, perchè il contraccambio ti sarà dato certamente alla resurrezione dei giusti». | 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just." |
| 15 Uno dei commensali, sentito questo discorso, esclamò: «Beato chi avrà parte al banchetto nel regno di Dio». | 15 When one of those who sat at table with him heard this, he said to him, "Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!" |
| 16 Gesù gli rispose: «Un uomo fece una gran cena e invitò molti. | 16 But he said to him, "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; |
| 17 All'ora della cena mandò il suo servo a dire ai convitati: - Venite, tutto è all'ordine. - | 17 and at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for all is now ready.' |
| 18 Ma tutti presero a scusarsi. Il primo gli disse: - Ho comprato un podere e bisogna che vada a vederlo; abbimi, ti prego, per iscusato. - | 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' |

| 20 Un altro ancora disse: - Ho preso moglie e quindi non posso venire. - | 20 And another said, 'I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' |
| 21 Tornato, il servo riferì queste cose al padrone. Allora il padrone di casa, adirato, disse al servo: - Presto, va' per le piazze e per le contrade della città e conduci qua i poveri, gli storpi, i ciechi e gli zoppi. - | 21 So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' |
| 22 Poi il servo disse: - Signore, è stato fatto come hai ordinato, e ancora c'è del posto. - | 22 And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.' |
| 23 Il padrone ordinò al servo: - Va' per le strade e lungo le siepi e costringi la gente a entrare, affinchè la mia casa si riempia. | 23 And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. |
| 24 Perchè io vi dico che nessuno di coloro ch'erano stati invitati, assaggerà la mia cena -». | 24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.'" |
| 25 Siccome una gran folla camminava con lui, egli si voltò e disse loro: | 25 Now great multitudes accompanied him; and he turned and said to them, |
| 26 «Se uno viene a me e non odia suo padre e sua madre e la moglie e i figli e i fratelli e le sorelle e perfino la sua vita, non può essere mio discepolo. | 26 "If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. |
| 27 E chi non porta la sua croce e non mi segue, non può essere mio discepolo. | 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. |
| 28 Infatti chi di voi, volendo inalzare una torre, dapprima non si siede a calcolare la spesa per vedere se ha da poterla finire? | 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? |
| 29 Perchè non avvenga che, gettate le fondamenta, nè potendo terminarla, tutti quelli che stanno a vedere comincino a burlarsi di lui, | 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, |
| 30 dicendo: - Costui ha cominciato a fabbricare e non ha potuto finire. - | 30 saying, 'This man began to build, and was not able to finish.' |
| 31 Oppure qual è quel re, che partendo per muovere guerra a un altro re, non si raccolga prima a esaminare se possa con diecimila uomini affrontare l'altro che gli vien contro con ventimila? | 31 Or what king, going to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? |
| 32 Altrimenti quando l'altro è ancora lontano, gli manda un'ambasciata a chiedere di trattar la pace. | 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and asks terms of peace. |
| 33 Così, chiunque di voi non rinunzia a tutto quanto possiede, non può essere mio discepolo. | 33 So therefore, whoever of you does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple." |
| 34 Certo, il sale è buono; ma se il sale diventa scipito, con che gli si darà sapore? | 34 "Salt is good; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? |
| 35 Non è buono nè per la terra, nè per il concime e lo si butta via. Chi ha orecchi da udire, oda». | 35 It is fit neither for the land nor for the dunghill; men throw it away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear." |
