Geremia 38

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - E Safatia figlio di Matan, e Gedelia, figlio di Passur, e Jucal figlio di Selemia, e Passur figlio di Melchia udirono i discorsi che Geremia faceva a tutto il popolo dicendo:	1 But Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah and Pashhur son ofMalchiah heard the words which Jeremiah was saying to al the people,
2 «Così dice il Signore: - Chiunque resterà in città morrà di spada, di fame, di peste, ma chi si arrenderà ai Caldei vivrà e avrà sana e salva la vita. -	2 'Yahweh says this, "Anyone who stays in this city wil die by sword, famine or plague; but anyone wholeaves it and surrenders to the Chaldaeans wil live; he wil escape with his life.
3 Così dice il Signore: - La città sarà sicuramente data in mano all'esercito del re di Babilonia che la prenderà!-».	3 Yahweh says this: This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he willcapture it." '
4 Quei principi dissero dunque al re: «Chiediamo che questo uomo sia fatto morire, perchè cerca apposta di far cadere le braccia ai combattenti che sono rimasti in città, le braccia a tutto il popolo parlando in tal modo; questo uomo insomma non procura pace al popolo ma danno».	4 The chief men then said to the king, 'You must have this man put to death: he is unquestionablydisheartening the remaining soldiers in the city, and al the people too, by talking like this. This man is seekingnot the welfare of the people but their ruin.'
5 E il re Sedecia disse: «Eccolo, è nelle vostre mani, perchè il re non permetterà mai che si neghi a voi qualunque cosa».	5 King Zedekiah answered, 'He is in your hands as you know, for the king is powerless to oppose you.'
6 Presero così Geremia e lo misero nella cisterna di Melchia, figlio di Amelec, che si trovava nel cortile del carcere calandolo con delle funi nella cisterna in cui non c'era acqua, ma melma; e Geremia si trovò sprofondato dentro la melma.	6 So they took Jeremiah and put him into the storage-wel of the king's son Malchiah in the Court of theGuard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the storage-well, only mud, and into the mudJeremiah sank.
7 Intanto Abdemelec, un etiope, eunuco nella casa del re, seppe che avevano messo Geremia nella cisterna; in quel frattempo il re aveva la sua residenza alla porta di Beniamino.	7 But Ebed-Melech the Cushite, a eunuch attached to the palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put intothe storage-wel . As the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,
8 Abdemelec dunque uscì dalla casa reale e parlò al re dicendogli:	8 Ebed-Melech came out from the palace and spoke to the king.
9 «O re, signor mio, questi uomini si sono diportati malissimo, nel modo con cui hanno maltrattato Geremia profeta, cacciandolo in una cisterna perchè muoia di fame, non essendovi più pane in città».	9 'My lord king,' he said, 'these men have done a wicked thing by treating the prophet Jeremiah like this:they have thrown him into the storage-well. He will starve to death there, since there is no more food in the city.'
10 Allora il re diede ordine all'etiope Abdemelec dicendogli: «Prendi con te trenta uomini di qui e leva Geremia profeta dalla cisterna prima che muoia».	10 At this the king gave Ebed-Melech the Cushite the fol owing order: 'Take thirty men with you from hereand pul the prophet Jeremiah out of the storage-wel before he dies.'
11 Allora Abdemelec, presi seco gli uomini, entrò nella casa del re, in un ripostiglio sottostante alla guardaroba donde tolse dei panni vecchi e fuor d'uso e logori, e con una fune li calò giù a Geremia nella cisterna.	11 Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went into the palace to the Treasury wardrobe; out of it hetook some torn, worn-out rags which he lowered on ropes to Jeremiah in the storage-wel .
12 Poi Abdemelec, l'etiope, disse a Geremia: «Mettiti questi vecchi panni e questi cenci e stracci sotto le ascelle delle braccia e sopra le funi»; e Geremia fece così.	12 Ebed-Melech the Cushite then said to Jeremiah, 'These torn, worn-out rags are for you to put underyour armpits to pad the ropes.' Jeremiah did this.
13 Allora lo sollevarono colle funi, e lo tirarono fuori dalla cisterna, e così rimase nel cortile del carcere.	13 Then they hauled Jeremiah up with the ropes and pulled him out of the storage-wel . And Jeremiahstayed in the Court of the Guard.
14 Poi il re Sedecia mandò e fece venire a sè Geremia profeta, al terzo adito che mette nella casa del Signore; e il re disse a Geremia: «Sono a chiederti una parola, non celarmi nulla!».	14 King Zedekiah had the prophet Jeremiah summoned to him at the third entrance to the Temple ofYahweh. 'I want to ask you for a word,' the king said to Jeremiah, 'keep nothing back from me.'
15 E Geremia disse a Sedecia: «Se io te la manifesterò apertamente non mi farai tu uccidere? E se un consiglio ti avrò dato, non mi ascolterai».	15 Jeremiah answered Zedekiah, 'If I do proclaim it to you, are you not sure to have me put to death?And if I give you advice, you wil not listen to me.'
16 Allora Sedecia fece giuramento in segreto a Geremia dicendo: «Vive il Signore, che ci ha fatto quest'anima, io non ti farò uccidere, nè ti consegnerò nelle mani di cotesti uomini che cercano di toglierti la vita!».	16 King Zedekiah then secretly swore this oath to Jeremiah, 'As Yahweh lives, giver of this life of ours, Iwil have you neither put to death nor handed over to these men who are determined to kill you.'
17 Allora Geremia disse a Sedecia: «Così dice il Signore degli eserciti il Dio d'Israele: - Se uscirai per arrenderti ai principi del re di Babilonia, avrai assicurata la vita e questa città non sarà data alle fiamme, e sarai salvo tu e la tua casa.	17 Jeremiah then said to Zedekiah, 'Yahweh, God Sabaoth, God of Israel, says this, "If you go out andsurrender to the king of Babylon's generals, your life will be safe and this city will not be burnt down; you andyour family wil survive.
18 Ma se non ti arrenderai ai principi del re di Babilonia, la città sarà data in mano ai Caldei, e la daranno alle fiamme, e tu non scamperai dalle loro mani -».	18 But if you do not go out and surrender to the king of Babylon's generals, this city wil be handed overto the Chaldaeans and they wil burn it down; nor wil you yourself escape their clutches." '
19 E il re Sedecia disse a Geremia: «Sono preoccupato dal pensiero dei Giudei fuggiti ai Caldei, in mano dei quali potrei esser dato, ed essere esposto al ludibrio di essi».	19 King Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'I am afraid of the Judaeans who have already gone over to theChaldaeans: I might be handed over to them and they would il -treat me.'
20 Geremia rispose: «No, non ti daranno nelle loro mani! Ascolta per pietà la voce del Signore che io ti faccio sentire, e sarà pel tuo bene e avrai sicura la vita.	20 'You wil not be handed over to them,' Jeremiah replied. 'Please listen to Yahweh's voice as I haverelayed it to you, and then al wil go wel with you and your life wil be safe.
21 Ma se tu non vuoi arrenderti, questo è ciò che mi ha fatto vedere il Signore:	21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what Yahweh has shown me:
22 - Ecco che tutte le donne rimaste nella casa del re di Giuda saranno condotte ai principi del re di Babilonia, e saran esse che diranno: "Ti hanno sedotto, hanno potuto più di te quei tuoi uomini della pace, ti hanno ficcato coi piedi nel lubrico fango e si sono tirati indietro».	22 the sight of al the women left in the king of Judah's palace being led off to the king of Babylon'sgenerals and saying: "They have misled you, they have triumphed over you, those friends of yours! Your feethave sunk in the mud! They are up and away!"
23 E tutte le tue donne e i tuoi figli saranno tradotti ai Caldei, nè tu sfuggirai alle loro mani, ma resterai preda in mano al re di Babilonia che darà alle fiamme questa città -».	23 'Yes, al your wives and children wil be led off to the Chaldaeans, and you yourself wil not escapetheir clutches but wil be a prisoner in the clutches of the king of Babylon. And as for this city, it wil be burntdown.'
24 Allora Sedecia disse a Geremia: «Nessuno sappia queste parole e non morrai.	24 Zedekiah then said to Jeremiah, 'Do not let anyone else hear these words or you wil die.
25 E se i principi sentiranno dire che ho parlato teco e vengano a te e ti dicano: - Raccontaci quello che hai detto al re, non ce lo nascondere, non ti faremo morire, e quello che il re ti disse -	25 If the chief men hear that I have been talking to you, and come and say, "Tel us what you said to theking and what the king said to you; keep nothing back from us, or we shal put you to death,"
26 risponderai loro: - Ho umiliato le mie preci al re affinchè non comandi più di ricondurmi nella casa di Jonatan per andar ivi a morire -».	26 you must reply, "I presented this request to the king: that he would not have me sent back toJonathan's house to die." '
27 Vennero infatti tutti i principi da Geremia e lo interrogarono, ed egli rispose loro secondo quanto gli aveva ingiunto il re e senz'altro domandare lo lasciarono perchè nulla era trapelato.	27 And in fact al the chief men came to Jeremiah and questioned him. He told them exactly what theking had ordered him to say. They then left him in peace, since the conversation had not been overheard.
28 E Geremia rimase nel cortile del carcere fino al giorno in cui Gerusalemme fu presa: ciò che infatti avvenne.	28 And Jeremiah stayed in the Court of the Guard until the day Jerusalem was captured. And he wasthere when Jerusalem actual y was captured.
