BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Grandi sono i tuoi giudizi, o Signore, e difficili a spiegare i tuoi oracoli; perciò le anime senza istruzione si smarrirono.	1 Yes, your judgements are great and impenetrable, which is why uninstructed souls have gone astray.
2 Quando invero gli iniqui s’eran persuasi di dominar sul popol santo, stretti [invece] nelle catene delle tenebre e ne' ceppi di lunga notte, rinchiusi sotto i tetti, se ne giacquero esulanti dall’eterna provvidenza.	2 While the wicked supposed they had a holy nation in their power, they themselves lay prisoners of thedark, in the fetters of long night, confined under their own roofs, banished from eternal providence.
3 Mentre pensavano di restar nascosti co’ loro segreti peccati sotto il tenebroso velo dell’oblio, furon dispersi, colti da terribil spavento e conturbati da spettri.	3 While they thought to remain unnoticed with their secret sins, curtained by dark forgetfulness, theywere scattered in fearful dismay, terrified by apparitions.
4 Neppur l’antro, che li ricettava, li manteneva sicuri; chè gli atterrivano gli echi risonanti dall’alto, e le apparizioni di lugubri spettri gli spaventavano,	4 The hiding place sheltering them could not ward off their fear; terrifying noises echoed round them;and gloomy, grim-faced spectres haunted them.
5 Non c’era forza di fuoco che potesse loro far luce, ne le brillanti fiamme delle stelle valevano a rischiarar quella notte orrenda, e	5 No fire had power enough to give them light, nor could the brightly blazing stars il uminate that dreadfulnight.
6 [solo] riluceva ad essi una qualche fiammata improvvisa, piena di terrore; e spaventati da quella visione invisibile, si figuravano ancor peggiori le cose viste.	6 The only light for them was a great, spontaneous blaze -- a fearful sight to see! And in their terror,once that sight had vanished, they thought what they had seen more terrible than ever.
7 Le ciurmerle dell’arte magica giacevan giù [impotenti] e la [lor] vanteria di sapienza era smascherata vergognosamente,	7 Their magical il usions were powerless now, and their claims to intel igence were ignominiouslyconfounded;
8 Quei che si millantavan di scacciare i terrori e i turbamenti dell’anima malata, eran malati essi stessi d’una ridicola paura!	8 for those who promised to drive out fears and disorders from sick souls were now themselves sick withludicrous fright.
9 Perchè anche quando nulla di mostruoso gli spaventava, atterriti già al passar delle bestie e al sibilo de’ serpenti, si morivan di paura, ricusando persino di guardar quell’aria che in niun modo può sfuggirsi.	9 Even when there was nothing frightful to scare them, the vermin creeping past and the hissing ofreptiles filled them with panic;
10 La malvagità invero, con l'esser [di sua natura] paurosa, testimonia la [propria] condanna, e sempre si figura il peggio nel turbamento della coscienza.	10 they died convulsed with fright, refusing even to look at empty air, which cannot be eluded anyhow!
11 La paura infatti non è altro, se non l’abbandono degli aiuti che provengon dal ragionare,	11 Wickedness is confessedly very cowardly, and it condemns itself; under pressure from conscience italways assumes the worst.
12 e minore essendo al di dentro la speranza, maggior caso fa dell’ignorar la causa donde viene il tormento.	12 Fear, indeed, is nothing other than the failure of the help offered by reason;
13 Essi pertanto in una notte davvero impotente, e sbucata fuori dalle infime profondità dell’[impotente] averno, addormentati nello stesso sonno,	13 the less you rely within yourself on this, the more alarming it is not to know the cause of yoursuffering.
14 ora da paurose ombre di spettri erano agitati, ora prostrati per il tradimento della [loro] anima; che un subito e inaspettato terrore gli aveva invasi.	14 And they, al locked in the same sleep, while that darkness lasted -- which was in fact quite powerlessand had issued from the depths of equal y powerless Hades-
15 E venendo poi alcuno di loro a cadere, era tenuto rinchiuso in una prigione senza ferri.	15 were now chased by monstrous spectres, now paralysed by the fainting of their souls; for a sudden,unexpected terror had attacked them.
16 Foss’egli un contadino o un pastore o un operalo addetto al lavori del campo, sorpreso, era assoggettato all'inevitabile necessità:	16 And thus, whoever it might be that fel there stayed clamped to the spot in this prison without bars.
17 da una stessa catena di tenebre eran tutti avvinti. Sia il vento che fischiava, o il canto melodioso degli uccelli tra i folti rami, o il rumor d’acqua scorrente con impeto,	17 Whether he was ploughman or shepherd, or somebody at work in the desert, he was stil overtakenand suffered the inevitable fate, for al had been bound by the one same chain of darkness.
18 l’aspro fracasso di sassi precipitanti, o l’invisibile corsa di saltellanti animali, o l’urto fiero di belve ruggenti, o l’eco ripercossa dalle più alte montagne, [tutto] li paralizzava per lo spavento.	18 The soughing of the wind, the tuneful noise of birds in the spreading branches, the measured beat ofwater in its powerful course, the headlong din of rocks cascading down,
19 Che, tutto il mondo splendeva di fulgida luce, ed era occupato senza impaccio in lavori; ma sovr’essi soli si stendeva gravosa notte, immagine delle tenebre che dovevano accoglierli. E più gravosi ancor delle tenebre erano essi a se stessi!	19 the unseen course of bounding animals, the roaring of the most savage of wild beasts, the echorebounding from the clefts in the mountains, all held them paralysed with fear.
	20 For the whole world shone with the light of day and, unhindered, went about its work;
	21 over them alone there spread a heavy darkness, image of the dark that would receive them. Butheavier than the darkness was the burden they were to themselves.
