BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Grandi sono i tuoi giudizi, o Signore, e difficili a spiegare i tuoi oracoli; perciò le anime senza istruzione si smarrirono.	1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described; therefore the unruly souls were wrong.
2 Quando invero gli iniqui s’eran persuasi di dominar sul popol santo, stretti [invece] nelle catene delle tenebre e ne' ceppi di lunga notte, rinchiusi sotto i tetti, se ne giacquero esulanti dall’eterna provvidenza.	2 For when the lawless thought to enslave the holy nation, shackled with darkness, fettered by the long night, they lay confined beneath their own roofs as exiles from the eternal providence.
3 Mentre pensavano di restar nascosti co’ loro segreti peccati sotto il tenebroso velo dell’oblio, furon dispersi, colti da terribil spavento e conturbati da spettri.	3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.
4 Neppur l’antro, che li ricettava, li manteneva sicuri; chè gli atterrivano gli echi risonanti dall’alto, e le apparizioni di lugubri spettri gli spaventavano,	4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared.
5 Non c’era forza di fuoco che potesse loro far luce, ne le brillanti fiamme delle stelle valevano a rischiarar quella notte orrenda, e	5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night.
6 [solo] riluceva ad essi una qualche fiammata improvvisa, piena di terrore; e spaventati da quella visione invisibile, si figuravano ancor peggiori le cose viste.	6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen.
7 Le ciurmerle dell’arte magica giacevan giù [impotenti] e la [lor] vanteria di sapienza era smascherata vergognosamente,	7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness.
8 Quei che si millantavan di scacciare i terrori e i turbamenti dell’anima malata, eran malati essi stessi d’una ridicola paura!	8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear.
9 Perchè anche quando nulla di mostruoso gli spaventava, atterriti già al passar delle bestie e al sibilo de’ serpenti, si morivan di paura, ricusando persino di guardar quell’aria che in niun modo può sfuggirsi.	9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles,
10 La malvagità invero, con l'esser [di sua natura] paurosa, testimonia la [propria] condanna, e sempre si figura il peggio nel turbamento della coscienza.	10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape.
11 La paura infatti non è altro, se non l’abbandono degli aiuti che provengon dal ragionare,	11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes.
12 e minore essendo al di dentro la speranza, maggior caso fa dell’ignorar la causa donde viene il tormento.	12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason;
13 Essi pertanto in una notte davvero impotente, e sbucata fuori dalle infime profondità dell’[impotente] averno, addormentati nello stesso sonno,	13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment.
14 ora da paurose ombre di spettri erano agitati, ora prostrati per il tradimento della [loro] anima; che un subito e inaspettato terrore gli aveva invasi.	14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep,
15 E venendo poi alcuno di loro a cadere, era tenuto rinchiuso in una prigione senza ferri.	15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected.
16 Foss’egli un contadino o un pastore o un operalo addetto al lavori del campo, sorpreso, era assoggettato all'inevitabile necessità:	16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined.
17 da una stessa catena di tenebre eran tutti avvinti. Sia il vento che fischiava, o il canto melodioso degli uccelli tra i folti rami, o il rumor d’acqua scorrente con impeto,	17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence;
18 l’aspro fracasso di sassi precipitanti, o l’invisibile corsa di saltellanti animali, o l’urto fiero di belve ruggenti, o l’eco ripercossa dalle più alte montagne, [tutto] li paralizzava per lo spavento.	18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water,
19 Che, tutto il mondo splendeva di fulgida luce, ed era occupato senza impaccio in lavori; ma sovr’essi soli si stendeva gravosa notte, immagine delle tenebre che dovevano accoglierli. E più gravosi ancor delle tenebre erano essi a se stessi!	19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them.
	20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption;
	21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness.
