LXXNEW JERUSALEM
και απεκριθη κυριος ο θεος τω ιωβ και ειπεν1 Stil speaking to Job, Yahweh said:
μη κρισιν μετα ικανου εκκλινει ελεγχων θεον αποκριθησεται αυτην2 Is Yahweh's opponent going to give way? Has God's critic thought up an answer?
υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει τω κυριω3 Job replied to Yahweh:
τι ετι εγω κρινομαι νουθετουμενος και ελεγχων κυριον ακουων τοιαυτα ουθεν ων εγω δε τινα αποκρισιν δω προς ταυτα χειρα θησω επι στοματι μου4 My words have been frivolous: what can I reply? I had better lay my hand over my mouth.
απαξ λελαληκα επι δε τω δευτερω ου προσθησω5 I have spoken once, I shal not speak again; I have spoken twice, I have nothing more to say.
ετι δε υπολαβων ο κυριος ειπεν τω ιωβ εκ του νεφους6 Yahweh gave Job his answer from the heart of the tempest. He said:
μη αλλα ζωσαι ωσπερ ανηρ την οσφυν σου ερωτησω δε σε συ δε μοι αποκριθητι7 Brace yourself like a fighter, I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
μη αποποιου μου το κριμα οιει δε με αλλως σοι κεχρηματικεναι η ινα αναφανης δικαιος8 Do you real y want to reverse my judgement, put me in the wrong and yourself in the right?
η βραχιων σοι εστιν κατα του κυριου η φωνη κατ' αυτον βροντας9 Has your arm the strength of God's, can your voice thunder as loud?
αναλαβε δη υψος και δυναμιν δοξαν δε και τιμην αμφιεσαι10 Come on, display your majesty and grandeur, robe yourself in splendour and glory.
αποστειλον δε αγγελους οργη παν δε υβριστην ταπεινωσον11 Let the fury of your anger burst forth, humble the haughty at a glance!
υπερηφανον δε σβεσον σηψον δε ασεβεις παραχρημα12 At a glance, bring down al the proud, strike down the wicked where they stand.
κρυψον δε εις γην εξω ομοθυμαδον τα δε προσωπα αυτων ατιμιας εμπλησον13 Bury the lot of them in the ground, shut them, every one, in the Dungeon.
ομολογησω αρα οτι δυναται η δεξια σου σωσαι14 And I shal be the first to pay you homage, since your own right hand is strong enough to save you.
αλλα δη ιδου θηρια παρα σοι χορτον ισα βουσιν εσθιει15 But look at Behemoth, my creature, just as you are! He feeds on greenstuff like the ox,
ιδου δη ισχυς αυτου επ' οσφυι η δε δυναμις επ' ομφαλου γαστρος16 but what strength he has in his loins, what power in his stomach muscles!
εστησεν ουραν ως κυπαρισσον τα δε νευρα αυτου συμπεπλεκται17 His tail is as stiff as a cedar, the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.
αι πλευραι αυτου πλευραι χαλκειαι η δε ραχις αυτου σιδηρος χυτος18 His bones are bronze tubes, his frame like forged iron.
τουτ' εστιν αρχη πλασματος κυριου πεποιημενον εγκαταπαιζεσθαι υπο των αγγελων αυτου19 He is the first of the works of God. His Maker threatened him with the sword,
επελθων δε επ' ορος ακροτομον εποιησεν χαρμονην τετραποσιν εν τω ταρταρω20 forbidding him the mountain regions and al the wild animals that play there.
υπο παντοδαπα δενδρα κοιμαται παρα παπυρον και καλαμον και βουτομον21 Under the lotus he lies, he hides among the reeds in the swamps.
σκιαζονται δε εν αυτω δενδρα μεγαλα συν ραδαμνοις και κλωνες αγνου22 The leaves of the lotus give him shade, the willows by the stream shelter him.
εαν γενηται πλημμυρα ου μη αισθηθη πεποιθεν οτι προσκρουσει ο ιορδανης εις το στομα αυτου23 If the river overflows, he does not worry: Jordan might come up to his mouth, but he would not care.
εν τω οφθαλμω αυτου δεξεται αυτον ενσκολιευομενος τρησει ρινα24 Who is going to catch him by the eyes or put poles through his nose?
αξεις δε δρακοντα εν αγκιστρω περιθησεις δε φορβεαν περι ρινα αυτου25 Leviathan, too! Can you catch him with a fish-hook or hold his tongue down with a rope?
ει δησεις κρικον εν τω μυκτηρι αυτου ψελιω δε τρυπησεις το χειλος αυτου26 Can you put a cane through his nostrils or pierce his jaw with a hook?
λαλησει δε σοι δεησει ικετηρια μαλακως27 Will he plead lengthily with you, addressing you in diffident tones?
θησεται δε διαθηκην μετα σου λημψη δε αυτον δουλον αιωνιον28 Will he strike a bargain with you to become your slave for life?
παιξη δε εν αυτω ωσπερ ορνεω η δησεις αυτον ωσπερ στρουθιον παιδιω29 Will you make a pet of him, like a bird, keep him on a lead to amuse your little girls?
ενσιτουνται δε εν αυτω εθνη μεριτευονται δε αυτον φοινικων γενη30 Is he to be sold by the fishing guild and then retailed by merchants?
παν δε πλωτον συνελθον ου μη ενεγκωσιν βυρσαν μιαν ουρας αυτου και εν πλοιοις αλιεων κεφαλην αυτου31 Riddle his hide with darts? Or his head with fishing spears?
επιθησεις δε αυτω χειρα μνησθεις πολεμον τον γινομενον εν σωματι αυτου και μηκετι γινεσθω32 You have only to lay a finger on him never to forget the struggle or risk it again!
