BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Davide da quel luogo salì ad abitare nei luoghi impervi di Engàddi.	1 From there David went up and installed himself in the strongholds of En-Gedi.
2 Quando Saul tornò dall’azione contro i Filistei, gli riferirono: «Ecco, Davide è nel deserto di Engàddi».	2 Once Saul was back from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, 'David is now in the desert of En-Gedi.'
3 Saul scelse tremila uomini valorosi in tutto Israele e partì alla ricerca di Davide e dei suoi uomini di fronte alle Rocce dei Caprioli.	3 Saul thereupon took three thousand men selected from al Israel and went in search of David and hismen east of the Rocks of the Mountain Goats.
4 Arrivò ai recinti delle greggi lungo la strada, ove c’era una caverna. Saul vi entrò per coprire i suoi piedi, mentre Davide e i suoi uomini se ne stavano in fondo alla caverna.	4 He came to the sheepfolds along the route, where there was a cave, and went in to cover his feet.Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave;
5 Gli uomini di Davide gli dissero: «Ecco il giorno in cui il Signore ti dice: “Vedi, pongo nelle tue mani il tuo nemico: trattalo come vuoi”». Davide si alzò e tagliò un lembo del mantello di Saul, senza farsene accorgere.	5 David's men said to him, 'Today is the day of which Yahweh said to you, "I shall deliver your enemyinto your power; do what you like with him." ' David got up and, unobserved, cut off the border of Saul's cloak.
6 Ma ecco, dopo aver fatto questo, Davide si sentì battere il cuore per aver tagliato un lembo del mantello di Saul.	6 Afterwards David reproached himself for having cut off the border of Saul's cloak.
7 Poi disse ai suoi uomini: «Mi guardi il Signore dal fare simile cosa al mio signore, al consacrato del Signore, dallo stendere la mano su di lui, perché è il consacrato del Signore».	7 He said to his men, 'Yahweh preserve me from doing such a thing to my lord as to raise my handagainst him, since he is Yahweh's anointed.'
8 Davide a stento dissuase con le parole i suoi uomini e non permise loro che si avventassero contro Saul. Saul uscì dalla caverna e tornò sulla via.	8 By these words David restrained his men and would not let them attack Saul.
9 Dopo questo fatto, Davide si alzò, uscì dalla grotta e gridò a Saul: «O re, mio signore!». Saul si voltò indietro e Davide si inginocchiò con la faccia a terra e si prostrò.	9 Saul then left the cave and went on his way. After this, David too left the cave and cal ed after Saul,'My lord king!' Saul looked behind him and David, bowing to the ground, prostrated himself.
10 Davide disse a Saul: «Perché ascolti la voce di chi dice: “Ecco, Davide cerca il tuo male”?	10 David then said to Saul, 'Why do you listen to people who say, "David intends your ruin"?
11 Ecco, in questo giorno i tuoi occhi hanno visto che il Signore ti aveva messo oggi nelle mie mani nella caverna; mi si diceva di ucciderti, ma ho avuto pietà di te e ho detto: “Non stenderò le mani sul mio signore, perché egli è il consacrato del Signore”.	11 This very day you have seen for yourself how Yahweh put you in my power in the cave and how,refusing to kil you, I spared you saying, "I wil not raise my hand against my lord, since he is Yahweh'sanointed."
12 Guarda, padre mio, guarda il lembo del tuo mantello nella mia mano: quando ho staccato questo lembo dal tuo mantello nella caverna, non ti ho ucciso. Riconosci dunque e vedi che non c’è in me alcun male né ribellione, né ho peccato contro di te; invece tu vai insidiando la mia vita per sopprimerla.	12 Look, father, look at the border of your cloak in my hand. Since, although I cut the border off yourcloak, I did not kil you, surely you realise that I intend neither mischief nor crime. I have not wronged you, andyet you hunt me down to take my life.
13 Sia giudice il Signore tra me e te e mi faccia giustizia il Signore nei tuoi confronti; ma la mia mano non sarà mai contro di te.	13 May Yahweh be judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you; but I shall neverlay a hand on you!
14 Come dice il proverbio antico: “Dai malvagi esce il male, ma la mia mano non sarà contro di te”.	14 (As the old proverb says: Wickedness comes out of wicked people, but I shal never lay a hand onyou!)
15 Contro chi è uscito il re d’Israele? Chi insegui? Un cane morto, una pulce.	15 On whose trail is the king of Israel campaigning? Whom are you pursuing? On the trail of a deaddog, of a flea!
16 Il Signore sia arbitro e giudice tra me e te, veda e difenda la mia causa e mi liberi dalla tua mano».	16 May Yahweh be the judge and decide between me and you; may he examine and defend my causeand give judgement for me by rescuing me from your clutches!'
17 Quando Davide ebbe finito di rivolgere a Saul queste parole, Saul disse: «È questa la tua voce, Davide, figlio mio?». Saul alzò la voce e pianse.	17 When David had finished saying this to Saul, Saul said, 'Is that your voice, my son David?' And Saulbegan to weep aloud.
18 Poi continuò rivolto a Davide: «Tu sei più giusto di me, perché mi hai reso il bene, mentre io ti ho reso il male.	18 'You are upright and I am not,' he said to David, 'since you have behaved wel to me, whereas I havebehaved badly to you.
19 Oggi mi hai dimostrato che agisci bene con me e che il Signore mi aveva abbandonato nelle tue mani e tu non mi hai ucciso.	19 And today you have shown how well you have behaved to me, since Yahweh had put me in yourpower but you did not kil me.
20 Quando mai uno trova il suo nemico e lo lascia andare sulla buona strada? Il Signore ti ricompensi per quanto hai fatto a me oggi.	20 When a man comes on his enemy, does he let him go unmolested? May Yahweh reward you for thegood you have done me today!
21 Ora, ecco, sono persuaso che certamente regnerai e che sarà saldo nelle tue mani il regno d’Israele.	21 Now I know that you wil indeed reign and that the sovereignty in Israel wil pass into your hands.
22 Ma tu giurami ora per il Signore che non eliminerai dopo di me la mia discendenza e non cancellerai il mio nome dalla casa di mio padre».	22 Now swear to me by Yahweh that you wil not suppress my descendants once I am gone, or blot myname out of my family.'
23 Davide giurò a Saul. Saul tornò a casa, mentre Davide con i suoi uomini salì al rifugio.	23 This David swore to Saul, and Saul went home while David and his men went back to the stronghold.
