Primo libro di Samuele 16

1 Il Signore disse a Samuele: «Fino a quando piangerai su Saul, mentre io l’ho ripudiato perché non regni su Israele? Riempi d’olio il tuo corno e parti. Ti mando da Iesse il Betlemmita, perché mi sono scelto tra i suoi figli un re».	1 Yahweh said to Samuel, 'How much longer do you mean to go on mourning over Saul, now that Imyself have rejected him as ruler of Israel? Fil your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse ofBethlehem, for I have found myself a king from among his sons.'
2 Samuele rispose: «Come posso andare? Saul lo verrà a sapere e mi ucciderà». Il Signore soggiunse: «Prenderai con te una giovenca e dirai: “Sono venuto per sacrificare al Signore”.	2 Samuel replied, 'How can I go? When Saul hears of it he wil kill me.' Yahweh then said, 'Take a heiferwith you and say, "I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh."
3 Inviterai quindi Iesse al sacrificio. Allora io ti farò conoscere quello che dovrai fare e ungerai per me colui che io ti dirò».	3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I shal reveal to you what you must do; and you wil anoint for me theone I indicate to you.'
4 Samuele fece quello che il Signore gli aveva comandato e venne a Betlemme; gli anziani della città gli vennero incontro trepidanti e gli chiesero: «È pacifica la tua venuta?».	4 Samuel did what Yahweh ordered and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the town came trembling tomeet him and asked, 'Seer, is your coming favourable for us,'
5 Rispose: «È pacifica. Sono venuto per sacrificare al Signore. Santificatevi, poi venite con me al sacrificio». Fece santificare anche Iesse e i suoi figli e li invitò al sacrificio.	5 'Yes,' he replied. 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Purify yourselves and come with me to thesacrifice.' He purified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 Quando furono entrati, egli vide Eliàb e disse: «Certo, davanti al Signore sta il suo consacrato!».	6 When they arrived, he looked at Eliab and thought, 'This must be Yahweh's anointed now before him,'
7 Il Signore replicò a Samuele: «Non guardare al suo aspetto né alla sua alta statura. Io l’ho scartato, perché non conta quel che vede l’uomo: infatti l’uomo vede l’apparenza, ma il Signore vede il cuore».	7 but Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Take no notice of his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him;God does not see as human beings see; they look at appearances but Yahweh looks at the heart.'
8 Iesse chiamò Abinadàb e lo presentò a Samuele, ma questi disse: «Nemmeno costui il Signore ha scelto».	8 Jesse then cal ed Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this oneeither.'
9 Iesse fece passare Sammà e quegli disse: «Nemmeno costui il Signore ha scelto».	9 Jesse then presented Shammah, but Samuel said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this one either.'
10 Iesse fece passare davanti a Samuele i suoi sette figli e Samuele ripeté a Iesse: «Il Signore non ha scelto nessuno di questi».	10 Jesse thus presented seven of his sons to Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, 'Yahweh has notchosen these.'
11 Samuele chiese a Iesse: «Sono qui tutti i giovani?». Rispose Iesse: «Rimane ancora il più piccolo, che ora sta a pascolare il gregge». Samuele disse a Iesse: «Manda a prenderlo, perché non ci metteremo a tavola prima che egli sia venuto qui».	11 He then asked Jesse, 'Are these al the sons you have?' Jesse replied, 'There is stil one left, theyoungest; he is looking after the sheep.' Samuel then said to Jesse, 'Send for him, for we shal not sit down toeat until he arrives.'
12 Lo mandò a chiamare e lo fece venire. Era fulvo, con begli occhi e bello di aspetto. Disse il Signore: «Àlzati e ungilo: è lui!».	12 Jesse had him sent for; he had ruddy cheeks, with fine eyes and an attractive appearance. Yahwehsaid, 'Get up and anoint him: he is the one!'
13 Samuele prese il corno dell’olio e lo unse in mezzo ai suoi fratelli, e lo spirito del Signore irruppe su Davide da quel giorno in poi. Samuele si alzò e andò a Rama.	13 At this, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him, surrounded by his brothers; and the spirit ofYahweh seized on David from that day onwards. Samuel, for his part, set off and went to Ramah.
14 Lo spirito del Signore si era ritirato da Saul e cominciò a turbarlo un cattivo spirito, venuto dal Signore.	14 Now the spirit of Yahweh had withdrawn from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh afflicted him withterrors.
15 Allora i servi di Saul gli dissero: «Ecco, un cattivo spirito di Dio ti turba.	15 Saul's servants said to him, 'An evil spirit from God is undoubtedly the cause of your terrors.
16 Comandi il signore nostro ai servi che gli stanno intorno e noi cercheremo un uomo abile a suonare la cetra. Quando il cattivo spirito di Dio sarà su di te, quegli metterà mano alla cetra e ti sentirai meglio».	16 Let our lord give the order, and your servants who wait on you wil look for a skilled harpist; when theevil spirit from God comes over you, he wil play and it wil do you good.'
17 Saul rispose ai ministri: «Ebbene, cercatemi un uomo che suoni bene e fatelo venire da me».	17 Saul said to his attendants, 'Find me, please, a man who plays wel , and bring him to me.'
18 Rispose uno dei domestici: «Ecco, ho visto il figlio di Iesse il Betlemmita: egli sa suonare ed è forte e coraggioso, abile nelle armi, saggio di parole, di bell’aspetto, e il Signore è con lui».	18 One of the servants then spoke up and said, 'I have seen one of the sons of Jesse the Bethlehemite:he is a skil ed player, a brave man and a fighter, well spoken, good-looking and Yahweh is with him.'
19 Saul mandò messaggeri a dire a Iesse: «Mandami tuo figlio Davide, quello che sta con il gregge».	19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse with the order, 'Send me your son David (who is with the sheep).'
20 Iesse prese un asino, del pane, un otre di vino e un capretto e, per mezzo di Davide, suo figlio, li inviò a Saul.	20 Jesse took five loaves, a skin of wine and a kid, and sent them to Saul by his son David.
21 Davide giunse da Saul e cominciò a stare alla sua presenza. Questi gli si affezionò molto ed egli divenne suo scudiero.	21 David went to Saul and entered his service; Saul became very fond of him and David became hisarmour-bearer.
22 E Saul mandò a dire a Iesse: «Rimanga Davide con me, perché ha trovato grazia ai miei occhi».	22 Saul then sent a message to Jesse, 'Let David stay in my service, since he has won my favour.'
23 Quando dunque lo spirito di Dio era su Saul, Davide prendeva in mano la cetra e suonava: Saul si calmava e si sentiva meglio e lo spirito cattivo si ritirava da lui.	23 And whenever the spirit from God came over Saul, David would take a harp and play; Saul wouldthen be soothed; it would do him good, and the evil spirit would leave him.
