1 Saul era nel pieno degli anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò due anni su Israele.	1 Saul was . . . years old when he became king, and reigned over Israel for . . . years.
2 Egli si scelse tremila uomini da Israele: duemila stavano con Saul a Micmas e sul monte di Betel e mille stavano con Giònata a Gàbaa di Beniamino; rimandò invece il resto del popolo ciascuno alla sua tenda.	2 Saul selected three thousand men of Israel; two thousand of them were with Saul at Michmash and inthe highlands of Bethel, and one thousand with Jonathan at Geba of Benjamin; the rest of the people Saul senthome, everyone to his tent.
3 Allora Giònata sconfisse la guarnigione dei Filistei che era a Gàbaa e i Filistei lo seppero. Ma Saul suonò il corno in tutta la regione gridando: «Ascoltino gli Ebrei!».	3 Jonathan kil ed the Philistine governor stationed at Gibeah and the Philistines were informed that theHebrews had risen in revolt. Saul had the trumpet sounded throughout the country,
4 Tutto Israele udì e corse la voce: «Saul ha battuto la guarnigione dei Filistei e ormai Israele s’è urtato con i Filistei». Il popolo si radunò dietro Saul a Gàlgala.	4 and al Israel heard the news, 'Saul has kil ed the Philistine governor, and now Israel has antagonisedthe Philistines.' So all the people ral ied behind Saul at Gilgal.
5 I Filistei si radunarono per combattere Israele, con trentamila carri e seimila cavalieri, e una moltitudine numerosa come la sabbia che è sulla spiaggia del mare. Così si levarono e posero il campo a Micmas, a oriente di Bet-Aven.	5 The Philistines mustered to make war on Israel, three thousand chariots, six thousand horse and aforce as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and pitched camp at Michmash, to the east ofBeth-Aven.
6 Quando gli Israeliti videro di essere alle strette e che il popolo era incalzato, cominciarono a nascondersi nelle grotte, nelle cavità, fra le rocce, nelle fosse e nelle cisterne.	6 When the Israelites saw that their plight was desperate, being so hard pressed, the people hid incaves, in holes, in crevices, in vaults, in wel s.
7 Alcuni Ebrei passarono oltre il Giordano, nella terra di Gad e di Gàlaad. Saul restava a Gàlgala, e tutto il popolo che era con lui s’impaurì.	7 Some also crossed the Jordan fords into the territory of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal and althe people who followed him were trembling.
8 Aspettò tuttavia sette giorni per l’appuntamento fissato da Samuele. Ma Samuele non arrivava a Gàlgala e il popolo cominciò a disperdersi lontano da lui.	8 He waited for seven days, the period fixed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and thearmy, deserting Saul, began dispersing.
9 Allora Saul diede ordine: «Portatemi l’olocausto e i sacrifici di comunione». Quindi offrì l’olocausto.	9 Saul then said, 'Bring me the burnt offering and the communion sacrifices.' And he presented the burntoffering.
10 Ed ecco, appena ebbe finito di offrire l’olocausto, giunse Samuele, e Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo.	10 Just as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to meet andgreet him.
11 Samuele disse: «Che hai fatto?». Saul rispose: «Vedendo che il popolo si disperdeva lontano da me e tu non venivi all’appuntamento, mentre i Filistei si riunivano a Micmas,	11 Samuel said, 'What have you been doing?' Saul replied, 'I saw the army deserting me anddispersing, and you had not come at the time fixed, while the Philistines were mustering at Michmash.
12 ho detto: “Ora scenderanno i Filistei contro di me a Gàlgala, mentre io non ho ancora placato il Signore”. Perciò mi sono fatto ardito e ho offerto l’olocausto».	12 So I thought: Now the Philistines are going to fall on me at Gilgal and I have not implored the favourof Yahweh. So I felt obliged to make the burnt offering myself.'
13 Rispose Samuele a Saul: «Hai agito da stolto, non osservando il comando che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti aveva dato, perché in questa occasione il Signore avrebbe reso stabile il tuo regno su Israele per sempre.	13 Samuel said to Saul, 'You have acted like a fool. You have not obeyed the order which Yahweh yourGod gave you. Otherwise, Yahweh would have confirmed your sovereignty over Israel for ever.
14 Ora invece il tuo regno non durerà. Il Signore si è già scelto un uomo secondo il suo cuore e gli comanderà di essere capo del suo popolo, perché tu non hai osservato quanto ti aveva comandato il Signore».	14 But now your sovereignty wil not last; Yahweh has discovered a man after his own heart anddesignated him as leader of his people, since you have not carried out what Yahweh ordered you.'
15 Samuele poi si alzò e salì da Gàlgala a Gàbaa di Beniamino; Saul contò la gente che si trovava con lui: erano seicento uomini.	15 Samuel then got up and left Gilgal to continue his journey. Those people remaining followed Saul ashe went to join the warriors, and went from Gilgal to Geba of Benjamin. Saul reviewed the force that was withhim; there were about six hundred men.
16 Saul e Giònata e la gente rimasta con loro stavano a Gàbaa di Beniamino e i Filistei erano accampati a Micmas.	16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and the force that was with them took up their quarters in Geba of Benjaminwhile the Philistines camped at Michmash.
17 Dall’accampamento filisteo uscì una pattuglia d’assalto divisa in tre schiere: una si diresse sulla via di Ofra verso la regione di Sual,	17 The raiding company sallied out of the Philistine camp in three groups: one group made for Ophrahin the territory of Shual;
18 un’altra si diresse sulla via di Bet-Oron, la terza schiera si diresse sulla strada della regione che guarda la valle di Seboìm verso il deserto.	18 one group made for Beth-Horon; and one group made for the high ground overlooking the Valley ofthe Hyenas, in the direction of the desert.
19 Allora non si trovava un fabbro in tutta la terra d’Israele, «perché – così dicevano i Filistei – gli Ebrei non fabbrichino spade o lance».	19 There was not a single blacksmith throughout the territory of Israel, the Philistines' reasoning being,'We do not want the Hebrews making swords or spears.'
20 Così gli Israeliti dovevano sempre scendere dai Filistei per affilare ognuno l’aratro o la zappa o la scure o il vomere dell’aratro.	20 Hence, the Israelites were al in the habit of going down individually to the Philistines to sharpen theirploughshares, axes, mattocks and scythes.
21 Il prezzo era di un pim per l’aratro e le zappe, e di un terzo di siclo per le scuri e per raddrizzare il pungolo.	21 The price was two-thirds of a shekel for ploughshares and axes, and one-third for sharpeningmattocks and straightening goads.
22 Nel giorno della battaglia, tra tutta la gente che stava con Saul e Giònata non si trovò in mano ad alcuno né spada né lancia. Se ne trovò solo per Saul e suo figlio Giònata.	22 So it was that on the day of the battle, no one in the army with Saul and Jonathan was equipped witheither sword or spear; only Saul and his son Jonathan were so equipped.
23 Intanto una guarnigione di Filistei era uscita verso il passo di Micmas.	23 A Philistine unit set out for the Pass of Michmash.
